Junior Ned Tomic posted career highs of 20 points and nine rebounds as the Cornell men’s basketball team scored its first victory in nearly 11 months, topping Division III Oberlin College, 77-55, before a Kids’ Day crowd of 2,104 at Newman Arena.
The Big Red (1-13) snapped a 19-game losing streak, the longest active streak in the nation and the longest in program history, surpassing the previous long of 16 games set in 1972-73. Coach Bill Courtney’s squad won for the first time since defeating Brown, 69-66, on Feb. 16, 2013.
The Yeomen, which had won three of four entering Saturday’s game, dropped to 4-9 overall.
Tomic scored 18 of his 20 points after halftime to surpass his previous career high of six points. The native of North Royalton, Ohio — which is approximately 33 miles from the Oberlin campus — scored on an array of fakes, drop-steps and putbacks, connecting on 9-of-13 shots off the bench. His nine rebounds nearly doubled his previous career-best of five; he also had three blocked shots, after entering the game with just one for his career.
Sophomore guard Nolan Cressler added 12 points and five rebounds, while junior Devin Cherry added 10 points, seven assists and six rebounds.
The Big Red shot 51 percent from the field, including 71 percent (17-of-24) after halftime to pull away from the Yeomen. Cornell dominated in points off the bench (41-24), second chance points (19-1), points off turnovers (24-9) and points in the paint (36-22) while holding a commanding 39-24 rebounding advantage.
Oberlin had three double-figure scorers, led by Emmanuel Lewis (14) and Miles Gueno (12). Swingman Geoff Simpson, Oberlin’s leading scorer at nearly 17 points per game, added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The game was evenly played for the better part of the first seven minutes before a 16-3 run that helped Cornell take a 24-11 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. Oberlin got back within nine points late in the first half and went in trailing by 10 at the break.
The Yeomen made a run early in the second half, getting back within 41-35 before Tomic took over. The junior scored 12 straight for the Big Red, including a dunk on a nice feed from senior forward Dwight Tarwater, to stem the run. Oberlin was able to keep the Big Red within arm’s length, but four times Tomic answered a visitor’s basket with one of his own.
Cornell pulled away down the stretch, gradually expanding the lead over the final 10 minutes, with CU’s largest advantage being the final score. Courtney emptied his bench for the final two minutes, with freshman guard JoJo Fallas capping the scoring with a three-point play with 36 seconds left.
Cornell opens Ivy League play when it visits Columbia at 7 p.m. Saturday at Levien Gymnasium in New York. The teams will complete the home-and-home series on Jan. 25 at Newman Arena.

A fastbreak layup by Cherry extend the Cornell lead out to 15, 37-22, with 4:15 remaining in the half, but Oberlin fought back to get within nine with 50 seconds to go. The 7-1 Yeomen spurt featured two free throw makes from both Simpson and Jack Poyle and a 3-pointer from Lewis. Cornell would add one more free throw before the break to take a 39-29 cushion into the intermission.
After getting within six early in the second half, the Yeomen found themselves down by just 10, 55-45, with 11:37 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the next six minutes were unkind to the Yeomen as Cornell went on a 12-4 run to extend their advantage to 18 with 5:26 left to play and effectively put the game out of reach for the Yeomen.
