News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Below, news and notes for Thursday...

  • As we reported on Twitter last night, a source tells The Cornell Basketball Blog that Ryan Wittman (Cornell '10) has accepted a grad student assistant coaching position at Boston College.  Wittman will be pursuing his MBA and will join a Boston College staff loaded with Cornell connections, including Steve Donahue (head coach), Nat Graham (Assistant Head Coach), Woody Kampmann  (Assistant Coach) and Izzi Metz (Director of Operations).
  • Nolan Cressler had 21 points on 5/9 shooting beyond the arc last night in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Summer Pro League per the Pittsburgh Tribune.  Cressler is briefly mentioned in a Tribune article covering the league.  Recaps of the game from last night are available on the Panther Lair and Panther Digest.
  • We are hearing that Louis Dale (Cornell '10) will sit out the 2013-2014 season as he recovers from a new ACL tear suffered while he was in the Greek A1 premier league.  Dale reportedly fully intends to return to professional basketball after a year of rehab.  Meanwhile, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) still has his sights set on returning to the NBA.  He had offseason back surgery and is expected to be able to compete for a roster spot somewhere next season.  His best path to the NBA might be a return to the D-League with the hope of another midseason call-up.
  • Jeff Aubry (Cornell '99) and his Mayaguez team are in the Puerto Rico BSN playoffs and trail Guayama, 1-0 in the series.
  • CuseNation.com recalls the 1966 NBA Draft selection of former Orangeman, Richard Dean and writes, "On Valentine's Day in 1966, he connected on all 13 of his attempts from the field against the Cornell Big Red on his way to a 30-point outing."
After three players decided to leave Purdue’s basketball team, it needed to add more talent back to its roster for the fall.
Purdue found the answers in Errick Peck from Cornell and Sterling Carter from Seattle University. Both players went under the radar coming out of college and were recruited by Purdue after finishing their final seasons at their respective schools. Peck is a forward from Indianapolis, Ind., who played in high school with former Purdue guard Kelsey Barlow. Carter is a guard from Seattle, WA. transferred to Seattle after red-shirting his freshman year at the University of the Pacific.

Last year as a senior at Cornell, Peck had a down year after missing all of the prior season with a knee injury. In 29 games for Cornell he averaged 24.5 minutes per game and 9.7 points per game. In his sophomore season he started 24 games and averaged 11 points per game.
“I wasn’t 100 percent last year, I played kind of on one knee,” Peck said. “It’ll be nice to have a season where I am fully 100 percent or close to it.”
... Peck said he has already imparted a little knowledge on the younger teammates.
“We still got two leaders in (Travis Carroll and Terone Johnson) so it’s pretty much their team,” Peck said. “I’m just on board to help contribute, but I got as much stories as they’re willing to listen to.”
Another benefit for Peck is while at Cornell he played against big basketball programs like Duke and Syracuse. He said playing teams like that will help with nerves.
“It’s kind of one of those things where you ‘been there, done that’ type deals,” Peck said. “The Big Ten is a gauntlet ... and there are a lot of good teams in the Big Ten so I haven’t been through that. You get a taste of it playing Syracuse, playing Minnesota, playing Wisconsin, playing at Duke you kind of get that atmosphere.”
Both players said they have transitioned over the last two weeks since joining the team. Peck said he has picked up on the offense and defense quicker than he thought he would, considering Cornell played differently. Carter said it’s been great to be working out with the team.

News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, news and notes...
  • Below, photos from Cornell's Prospect Camp held over the weekend in Newman Arena.  More than 100 high school recruiting targets attended.

  • PurpleWildcats.com writes of Gavin Skelly, a Northwestern recruit, "[he] embraces the idea of building tradition [at Northwestern]. He compared the program to Cornell, which made the Sweet Sixteen in 2010 after years of futility."
  • Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) makes Real GM's list of Americans abroad winning league titles.
Their one-on-one driveway showdowns and pick-up game brush-ups are epic. Flying elbows, an extra shove, straight-up hacking on the way to the basket — Drew and Nolan Cressler wouldn't have it any other way. It's what the basketball-playing brothers from Plum have done for years.
“One time we were playing 3-on-3 and he kept fouling me,” said Drew, who will be a senior at Pitt-Johnstown. “It went to blows. We had to be separated. It was intense.”
So, is it time to bury the sibling rivalry-sharpened hatchet? Maybe.
“It's gotten pretty heated and pretty physical sometimes,” said Nolan, a two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week as a freshman at Cornell. “I don't want to give away too much. My dad might read this.”
This summer, the Cresslers will team up for the first time since Drew was a senior and Nolan was a freshman on the Plum High School team. They'll play for the South Hills Audi team in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Pro-Am Summer League, which tips off Monday and runs through July 17.
Ultimately, both 6-foot-4 players push one another because they want to see the other succeed. Now, they'll get to work together — potentially in the same backcourt — against top talent while preparing for another college season.
Both were invited to play in the renowned league, which carries the reputation as the top summer hoops league in Western Pennsylvania for current and former college stars.
Rosters are dotted with players from Pitt, Duquesne, Robert Morris, West Virginia, other surrounding schools and some semi-professional players.
The Cresslers' teammates include former Pitt players Chevon Troutman, John DeGroat and Ronald Ramon.
Games are played at two locations: the Greentree Sportsplex and Montour Sports Complex.
South Hills Audi opens against Oliverio's Peppers at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Green Tree.
“I went to a couple of games last summer,” Nolan said. “I always knew about the league and how good it was.
“It will help me stay sharp and play against a high level of competition. I try to do all I can to work on my game (in the offseason), but there might be some things I still need to work on. It's good to stay competitive.”
Nolan played in all 31 games for Cornell, averaging 9.3 points and 3.7 rebounds while leading the team in 3-pointers made (54). He made 12 starts at point guard.
Nolan is working as a lot attendant for P&W Foreign Cars in Pittsburgh. His boss, Tracy Foster — who runs three car dealerships — also plays on the South Hills Audi team.
“I get to drive BMWs around, so I don't mind that,” Nolan said.
Foster, who is from Fort Wayne, Ind., is a former draft pick of the Philadelphia 76ers.
“I want to be able to make strides,” Nolan said. “I want to be a better on-ball defender. I also want to work on my pull-up and find more ways to score.”
After bouncing around from Fork Union Military Academy and Seton Hill before settling at UPJ, Drew averaged 10.8 points and 6.1 rebounds last season.
Drew, whose summer job is with Keystone Turf Products, also hopes to hone his skills while gauging where he stands against strong competition.
“It'll be fun,” he said. “I want to work on getting to the basket more and finish off one foot. I want to go harder to the basket. And I really want to get better defensively. I want to be able to shut someone down."

    • ESPN writes of Boston College's recruiting strategy, "With only a few scholarships available over the next two years, Steve Donahue and staff have the Eagles duplicating their blueprint for success from Cornell. Through evaluations and emphasizing skill sets such a shooting and passing with a value on basketball IQ, they are now ready to add to an already growing roster. "

      News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, news and notes for Monday...

      • Ridiculous Upside notes, "This past season, the Springfield Armor [of the NBA D-League] had two noteworthy Call-Ups, Willie Reed (Memphis) and Kris Joseph (Brooklyn). Prior to this season, the franchise witnessed three Call-Ups including Dennis Horner, Jerry Smith and Jeff Foote."
At the University of Richmond, players in the men’s basketball program pass their courses, do what the coaches ask and don’t transfer.
Doesn’t seem all that hard, does it?
      It’s harder than it sounds.
The NCAA released its most recent academic progress rate results this week and among the 347 men’s Division I basketball programs, 12 had perfect scores of 1,000.
Richmond was one of the 12, joined by Belmont, Bucknell, Butler, Cornell, Elon, Indiana, Lehigh, Kansas, Notre Dame, Texas and Vermont.
Justin Gray thought his teammate was going to shoot, but he went up for the rebound just in case.
When Gray instead was offered a perfect alley-oop toss off the backboard, the 6-foot-5 guard and top recruit from Tampa Berkley Prep knew what to do.
“I just dunked it,” said Gray, broad grin across his face. “It’s Dunk City. Had to do it.”
On the first day of FGCU team camp Friday in Alico Arena, Gray was among several handfuls of prospects basking in the enhanced profile of a program forever connected with March’s historic NCAA tournament run, which continues to resonate.
“I think it caught the nation’s attention, and certainly it made its way up to Tampa,” said Berkley Prep coach Bobby Reinhardt, whose program features at least two genuine Division-I prospects in Gray and fellow rising senior guard Marshall Holmes.
“We’re real happy for what the guys have done down here. I still think Florida is not regarded as highly as it needs to be in terms of basketball, at all levels. (FGCU) is certainly a boost in the arm for everybody in the state of Florida.”
About 55 teams are participating in FGCU’s camp, which runs through Sunday.
Defending Class 8A state champ Miami Norland boasts four Division-I prospects on its roster — including 6-9, premier sophomore Dewan Huell — while state-ranked recruits like Orlando-Edgewater’s Eddie Keith and Community School of Naples’ Jeff Merton were also among those on the floor.
“This is our first time coming to (FGCU). That should probably tell you something right there,” said Reinhardt, who said his team bypassed another school’s camp it usually attends this week.
“I think there’s probably some other teams that are here off of the high of Florida Gulf Coast and what they did. We knew there’d be some real quality teams because of that. That’s why we’re here.”
Gray, the seventh-ranked rising senior recruit in the state by FloridaHoops.com, first visited FGCU the week after the Eagles became the first No. 15 seed in NCAA tournament history to reach the Sweet 16.

Aside from seeing the team on television everywhere he went, Gray, whose brother played for Cornell, said he also took a strong liking to the “family atmosphere” surrounding the program.
“The stock has definitely risen up,” said Gray, who listed FGCU with Harvard, Stanford, Butler, Miami and Virginia atop his short list. “I just love coming here. The campus is beautiful. It’s close to home, so my family can come to my games. That’s all coming into play right now.”
Even with the head coaching change from Andy Enfield, now at USC, to former Kansas assistant Joe Dooley, coaches and recruits say FGCU’s appeal remains as strong if not stronger.
“Winning is a culture,” said Reinhardt, noting the importance of Enfield staff members Marty Richter, Michael Fly and Joey Cantens all remaining at FGCU as part of Dooley’s staff.
“That culture is going to remain. I know Joe Dooley will look to capitalize on that and keep the momentum going. I wouldn’t expect Florida Gulf Coast to skip a beat.”

      • Above is the result of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the Ivy League men's basketball teams.  Cornell finished tops in Ivy League and among a dozen schools nationally with a perfect score.  Harvard finished at the bottom of the Ivy League and in the bottom half of Division I.  Cornell has improved its APR school each over the last five seasons.  Conversely, since 2007 when Tommy Amaker was hired, Harvard has not improved in the APR either holding steady or dropping each successive season.  Schools such as Kentucky, Miami, FL, Kansas State, Memphis, Alabama and UNLV all performed better on the APR than Harvard.
      • The Syracuse Post Standard writes on the APR, "Who are the educational powerhouses in college sports? And, well, who are not?  The National Collegiate Athletic Association released its Academic Progress Rate on Tuesday which measures eligibility (academic and otherwise) and graduation and retention rates.  In football, Davidson and Northwestern were the top schools with a scores of 996.  In men's basketball, 12 schools scored a perfect 1,000, including Cornell."  The Standard also published the below photo and caption.
Cornell University’s men’s basketball team scored a perfect 1,000 on the NCAA’s its Academic Progress Rate report; SU’s team scored a 933. Syracuse University's Brandon Triche steals the ball from Cornell's Josh Figini in the Carrier Dome.
