Tonight's top notes:

Putting its 18-game home Ivy League winning streak on the line, the Tigers will host Cornell and Columbia this weekend in the first full weekend of Ivy League action. The streak is the longest for Princeton since the program won 26 straight from 1996-99.

One of Princeton's two long home winning streaks against an Ivy foe will also be on the line this weekend. The Tigers have beaten Columbia 19 straight times in Jadwin Gym. Columbia's last win in the building was in 1993.

Princeton has swept each of the last two visits from Cornell and Columbia. The last win in Jadwin for either of those teams in Jadwin was Cornell's 3-point win (48-45) in 2010, the year it advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.

Princeton will have its first five Ivy League games at home for the second time in three years. In 2011, the Tigers were able to use the 5-0 start toward a 12-2 Ivy finish.

Princeton is No. 1 in the Ivy League and No. 12 in the nation (through Jan. 27) in scoring defense at 56.9 ppg allowed. The Tigers are also No. 1 in the Ivy in field goal percentage defense at .410 and 3-point FG% defense at .326.

In November, Princeton shot .407 from the field. In December and January, Princeton has shot .470.
The Tigers are 7-1 when they score more than 60 points and 1-6 when they score 60 or fewer.

The Tigers are 4-0 when they shoot 50 percent or better and 4-7 when they shoot below 50 percent.

The Tigers are 4-0 when they hold opponents below 36 percent shooting and 4-7 when opponents shoot 36 percent or better.

Six of Princeton's seven wins, including the last six wins, have come by double-digit point margins. Six of the team's seven losses have come by seven points or fewer.

Princeton's top NCAA statistical ranking through games of Jan. 20 was in scoring defense, where Princeton's opponents' 58.6 ppg scored is 32nd-lowest in Division I.

Princeton is 5-0 when T.J. Bray reaches double digits in points, with wins over Lafayette (17), Kent State (15), Bucknell (11), Elon (12) and Penn (23). Mack Darrow (10 vs. Bucknell) is the only other player where Princeton has won all of his double-digit scoring games.

Two color commentators for Saturday's game, Noah Savage '08 on Princeton radio and Dalen Cuff, a 2006 Columbia alum on NBC Sports Network, played against each other for two seasons. Princeton was 7-1 against Cuff's teams, and Savage's teams were 5-3 against Columbia. In their head-to-head meetings, Princeton won three of four, but Cuff's team won his final meeting with Princeton, 65-64 in New York. Columbia's Justin Armstrong had the go-ahead bucket with 11 seconds to go in that game, and Savage's last try didn't fall as Columbia held on.Feb. 1 in Princeton basketball history:

Princeton is 13-5 all-time on Feb. 1.

The Tigers are 10-1 at home on Feb. 1 and have won their last four at home on that date. The only loss occurred in 1983, when Penn won 41-39.

Princeton has won six in a row on Feb. 1, the last loss coming at Columbia in 1986, 61-52.

Princeton and Cornell have never played on Feb. 1.

Feb. 2 in Princeton basketball history:

Princeton is 16-7 all-time on Feb. 2.

Princeton is 12-3 at home on Feb. 2 and have won five in a row in Jadwin on that date, the last loss coming against Penn in 1985, a 59-49 Quaker win.

Princeton's winning streak on Feb. 2 is only one, a win in Jadwin over Harvard in 2008, as Yale won in 2007 in New Haven.

Princeton is 2-0 against Columbia on Feb. 2, in New York in 1990 and in Jadwin in 1996. In the Jadwin game, Mitch Henderson had 11 points off the bench as one of three Tigers in double figures. Sydney Johnson '97 had 13 points, and Steve Goodrich '98 had 15.

Against Cornell:

Princeton has averaged 79.5 points per game over Cornell's last two visits to Jadwin Gym, scoring 84 points in 2011 and 75 points in 2012. Princeton shot 59 percent from the field over those two games. In the last two road games against Cornell, the Tigers averaged 58 points and shot .410 from the field.

Like Princeton, Cornell has been better recently than at the start of the season. The Tigers started 3-6 and are 5-1 since, and the Red were 4-8 to start but 5-2 since.

Princeton and Cornell have one common non-conference opponent this season, Bucknell. The Tigers defeated the Bison, while Cornell lost.

Princeton returns 45 of the 75 points it scored against Cornell in the last meeting, a 75-57 win in Jadwin on Feb. 18, 2012. Most of the missing points were from the graduated Patrick Saunders (14) and Douglas Davis (11). Cornell returns 39 of its 57, minus 10 from Chris Wroblewski and eight from Drew Ferry.

Princeton has won 3 of 4 from Cornell since the Big Red's accomplished Class of 2010 graduated. Princeton hadn't lost back-to-back games to Cornell since 1985 and '86 until the Red dominated a six-year period from 2005-10 in which it won 10 of 12.

Cornell returns three players who scored in double figures in the first meeting between the teams last year, coming on Jan. 13, 2012 in Ithaca. Galal Cancer led the Red to a 67-59 win with 17 points, complemented by 12 points from Shonn Miller and 10 from Dwight Tarwater.

From the first meeting in Ithaca last year to the second meeting in Princeton, the Tigers raised their shooting percentage from .362 to .558. Princeton also did better on the glass, getting outrebounded 42-41 in the first meeting and outrebounding Cornell 28-21 in the rematch.

Ian Hummer (14, 13) and T.J. Bray (12, 16) scored double digits in both games last year against Cornell, as did the graduated Douglas Davis (16, 11). Galal Cancer (17, 10) was the only one to score 10+ in both games for Cornell.

Cornell's leading scorer this year, Shonn Miller, had his output halved from the first game last year to the second game, scoring 12 points on 10 shots with seven rebounds and three blocks in the first meeting before being held to five points on five shots with three rebounds and one block in the second game.

Against Columbia:

No current Tigers have lost to Columbia, as Princeton has won six straight against the Lions.

Princeton's 19-game home win streak against Columbia is its second-longest active home Ivy League win streak. Last season, Princeton was able to extend its home win streak over Harvard to 23 straight games.

Princeton and Columbia have two common non-conference opponents this season. Elon and Bucknell both defeated Columbia, while Princeton defeated both teams.

Princeton and Columbia are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the Ivy League in scoring defense, Princeton at 56.9 ppg and Columbia at 60.7. They are also two of the top three in FG% defense, Princeton No. 1 at .401 and Columbia No. 3 at .416.

Princeton and Columbia are two of the top three teams in the Ivy in 3-point FG%, Princeton hitting an Ivy third-best .354 and Columbia an Ivy second-best .369. At the other arc, however, Princeton is No. 1 in the Ivy in 3FG% defense, at .326 and Columbia is eighth, at .368 allowed.

Princeton and Columbia are the two best teams in the Ivy in turnover margin, Columbia at +2.00 per game and Princeton at +0.60 per game. They're also the top two teams in assist-to-turnover ratio, Columbia at 1.3:1 and Princeton at 1.1:1.

Only three tiems since 1972 has Columbia won back-to-back games against Princeton, over two seasons in 1985 and '86, sweeping the series in 1993, and again in 2006 and '07.

Over the last six meetings, Princeton has averaged outscoring Columbia 67.2 ppg to 54.7 ppg. All but one of the six wins has been by double digits.

Columbia's Brian Barbour averaged 23.5 ppg against Princeton last year, scoring 25 in Levien Gym and 22 in Jadwin.

Columbia's Mark Cisco had a double-double in the first meeting last year in New York, scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds, but in the rematch in Jadwin Cisco had just four points and five boards.

Princeton returns 48 of its 77 points from the second meeting with Columbia last season, with most of those not returning being the 20 points Douglas Davis '12 scored in that game. Columbia returns only three of the nine players who scored points in that game, with those three (22 from Barbour) accounting for 31 of the team's 66 points.

Milestones:

Last Sunday against TCNJ, Ian Hummer became the seventh player in program history to score 1,400 career points, now with 1,402. Current assistant coach Brian Earl '99 is in sixth place on the school career scoring list at 1,428 points.

Ian Hummer is on pace to stand second in career scoring and career field goals in program history, behind only Bill Bradley '65, by the end of this season. Bradley was a teammate of Ian Hummer's father Ed Hummer '67 for one varsity season, the run to the NCAA national semifinal in 1965.

Hummer is presently third on the Princeton list of career field goals made at 547. Only Kit Mueller '91 at 556 and Bill Bradley '65 at 856 have made more.

Hummer has 645 career rebounds, good for sixth since the stat began being kept in 1954-55. In fifth place is Chris Thomforde '69 with 709.

Hummer's 100 blocks are fourth on the program list since the stat began being kept for the 1974-75 season. Next up is former teammate Kareem Maddox '11 at 108.

Entering the Season:

Princeton was picked first in the Ivy League preseason poll, getting 16 of 17 first-place votes out of the pool of two media members from each of the eight Ivy markets and one national writer.

Princeton is aiming for its fourth straight 20-win season, which would be a first since 1999. A fourth straight postseason appearance would be the first such time since 2002.

Princeton is looking for double-digit Ivy League wins in four straight years for the first time since 2004.On the program:

Princeton leads the Ivy League with 26 Ivy championships (56 seasons) and 24 NCAA Tournament appearances (all since 1952).

Mitch Henderson '98, the team's Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach, is the 29th man to hold the job and the fourth consecutive alumnus to do so (John Thompson III '88, Joe Scott '87, Sydney Johnson '97).

Henderson, who played in three NCAA Tournaments for Princeton, spent 11 years at Northwestern under one of his former coaches at Princeton, Bill Carmody, as an assistant coach.

Princeton is tied for second with Kansas, and behind only North Carolina, in alumni as active Division I head coaches. Eight Tar Heels are roaming the sidelines, while six Jayhawks and these six Tigers are doing so: Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Scott '87 (Denver), Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Henderson '98 (Princeton), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Craig Robinson '83 (Oregon State).

On Cornell: The Big Red are 6-0 when scoring 70 points and 3-10 when not hitting 70 ... Cornell is 5-0 when shooting 45 percent from the field and 9-3 when shooting 37 percent, but 0-7 when not shooting 37 percent ... 10 players have started a game for Cornell, but only two (Shonn Miller, Johnathan Gray) have started all 19 games ... after not scoring double digits since the season's first three games, Galal Cancer has scored at least 10 points in three of the last five games including a season-high 19 last time out at Columbia ... Nolan Cressler, who started off averaging 9.9 ppg over the first seven games, has heated up again recently by averaging 9.3 ppg after going cold for much of December ... Dominick Scelfo, who did not play in three of the team's first nine games, has scored double figures in six of the last seven games.

On Columbia: Columbia is among the top teams in the nation in fewest turnovers (eighth, 10.4 per game), free throw percentage (12th, .758), and assist-to-turnover ratio (23rd, 1.33:1) through last Sunday's games ... Brian Barbour is among the nation's top players in free throw percentage (13th, .897) and assist-to-turnover ratio (14th, 2.92:1) ... Steve Frankoski is 11th in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.453) ... eight players have started a game for Columbia, with four players starting at least 12 games ... Barbour is the only player to start all 16 games ... Columbia is 8-2 when scoring 64 or more points and 1-5 when not scoring at least 64 points ... Columbia is 5-0 when shooting 48 percent or better from the field ... Barbour has not missed more than one free throw in any game since the opener, when he missed two (4-6) ... News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Cornell Big Red's visit to Princeton, Friday, February 1, 2013, 7 pm and visit to Penn, Saturday, February 2, 2013, 7 pm, with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, news and notes for Wednesday...

In the week between the men’s basketball team’s win at Cornell (9-10, 1-1 Ivy) and its losing rematch at home, both teams made notable changes to their game plans.  While Columbia (9-7, 1-1 Ivy) succeeded in giving up fewer three-point shots and limiting Cornell’s points in transition on Saturday, the Light Blue offense struggled to adjust to the Big Red defense.  “We really concentrated on limiting their dribble penetration—that was a big thing for us,” Cornell head coach Bill Courtney said. “We wanted to make sure, in particular at the end of the shot clock, that we were not allowing them to beat us off the dribble, especially [senior guard] Brian Barbour.”
  • The Harvard Crimson writes, "Princeton (8-7) trails close behind Harvard in the Ancient Eight men’s basketball standings, coming in at number two overall. The Tigers will face off against Cornell (9-10) and Columbia (9-7) in New York on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The contests precede the Crimson’s identical double-header versus the Big Red and the Lions next weekend."
  • Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) and his Zalgiris club of Lithuania are in a must win situation when they face Alba Berlin (Germany) on Thursday in the EuroLeague's Top 16. The EuroLeague previews the game and notes, "Jeff Foote gives Coach Joan Plaza a physical presence in the paint."  Zalgiris is 1-4 in the EuroLeague "Top 16" with just 9 games remaining.  The top four teams from the 8-team group advance onwards.
