Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his third season at Cornell (29-43, .403; 13-15 Ivy, .464) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
STORY LINES: The Cornell men's basketball team will close out its non-conference schedule when it meets Division III foe Old Westbury on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. at Newman Arena. The game will be the final tuneup before the 14-game Ancient Eight tournament begins next weekend at home against Columbia in front of a national television audience.
Cornell brings a 7-9 record and wins in three of its last four games after topping American 68-60 on Jan. 6 in Washington, D.C. The Big Red will be looking to close out its non-conference slate with its eighth win, the most since the 2009-10 team won a record 16 out of the league. The Big Red has reached that total just four times since 1968.
The Big Red's offense has been most dangerous when it has gotten itself easy shots from its pressure defense pressure. In Cornell's seven wins it has scored 76.0 points per game on 47 percent shooting. In its losses - 54.8 points on 35 percent shooting. It also has a positive assist-turnover ratio and has limited opponents to 39 percent shooting in the triumphs. That has always been the case with Courtney's teams at Cornell. The defense has been a constant - and when the offense is clicking, Cornell is tough to beat. It is 20-2 when scoring 70 or more points under his watch.
Cornell has been tremendously balanced on the offensive end, with only one player averaging in double figures, though seven other players score more than 4.6 points per game. Leading the way is sophomore Shonn Miller, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Miller leads the Big Red in scoring (10.5 ppg.), rebounding (7.4 rpg.), steals (1.8 spg.) and blocks (1.6 bpg.). Seniors Johnathan Gray (8.8 ppg.), Errick Peck (7.7 ppg.) and Eitan Chemerinski (7.4 ppg.) aren't far behind. Also among the balanced scoring group is freshmanNolan Cressler (7.4 ppg.) and sophomore Devin Cherry (7.0 ppg.) in the Big Red's 10-man rotation. Stalwart senior defender Miles Asafo-Adjei leads the team in assists (3.3), while sophomore Galal Cancer has flashed a strong all-court game (5.3 ppg., 2.7 rpg., 2.3 apg.). Junior guard Dominick Scelfo is averaging 12.3 points over his last three games to raise his scoring to 4.6 ppg.
A WIN OVER OLD WESTBURY WOULD:
• close Cornell's non-conference record at 8-9.
• give the Big Red a win over the Panthers in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
• make Cornell 2-1 in 2013.
• give Cornell a 4-1 record in its last five games.
• be the 1,204th in program history (1,203-1,317 in 114 seasons).
ABOUT OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury brought an 8-2 record and a 3-0 Skyline Conference mark into conference road contests at Mount Saint Vincent on Monday and Purchase on Wednesday. The team had a four-game win streak entering the week behind four double figure scorers. A high-powered offense, the Panthers are shooting 48 percent from the field overall and 40 percent from beyond the 3-point arc while averaging 83.6 points per game. Kerel Mitchell (21.5 ppg.) and Tyrik Tucker (19.3 ppg., 8.2 rpg.) pace the team in scoring, while Rashawn McCarthy (15.9 ppg.) and Josh Hill (14.7 ppg.) have also filled up the stat sheet. The Division III Panthers are led by 12th year head coach Bernard Tomlin, who has won more than 300 career games.
THE CORNELL-OLD WESTBURY SERIES: This is the first-ever meeting between Cornell and Old Westbury.
CORNELL VS. NON-DIVISION I OPPONENTS: Cornell has almost annually played and beaten a non-Division I team, going 19-0 with an average margin of victory of more than 30 points per game in the last 20 seasons. The 2010-11 season was the only year in the last 20 seasons where the schedule was made up completely of Division I teams. Each of the team's 19 wins came by double figures except for in 2004-05, when Ithaca College made a 10-point run against Cornell reserves in the final minute in a 69-67 Big Red victory. The Big Red is 154-61 against teams that are non-Division I foes after last year's 78-60 win over Albright.
THE STREAKS
• Cornell is 101-64 (.612) in the last six seasons.
• The Big Red is 51-19 (.729) in its last 70 Ivy League contests over the last six years.
• Cornell is 58-16 (.784) over its last 72 home games.
• In non-conference games, the Big Red is 49-45 (.521) over the last six seasons vs. scholarship programs.
TEAM NOTES:
• In its last four contests, Cornell has posted 58 assists with just 43 turnovers. In its previous two games, the Big Red had 14 assists and 45 turnovers.
• Big Red opponents have had a positive assist:turnover ratio just once in the last five games. Its foes have averaged just 3.8 steals in the last four games.
• Cornell has started hitting from beyond the 3-point arc over its last three, shooting 27-of-70 (.386).
• The Big Red is averaging 9.0 steals in its last four games, including a season-high 12 against Bucknell.
• Cornell's bench has outscored the opposing bench in 15 of the team's 16 games this year. It has more than doubled up the opponent in bench scoring in 12 of those games.
• For the year, the Big Red bench has outscored its opponents 491-214 so far this year (an average of 30.7-13.4), including 35-14 vs. Western Michigan, 47-8 vs. Presbyterian, 46-12 vs. Longwood, 29-2 vs. Vanderbilt, 48-24 vs. Boston University, 32-13 vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) and 28-3 vs. Binghamton.
• Only one player is averaging better than 23.0 minutes per game. Shonn Miller is playing 29.2 minutes every night.
• In its last six wins, Cornell has averaged 78.2 ppg., while shooting 49 percent from the floor (170-of-350).
• Cornell has turned the ball over 19 times or more four times this season, but also has six games where it has turned the ball over 10 times or less.
• Ten different players have reached double figures in scoring at least once in the team's first 16 games.
• Cornell's 3-point season totals in the last five years represent the top five single-season marks in school history. The Big Red's 217 3-pointers a year ago ranks fifth on the chart. Prior to 2007-08, when the run began, Cornell had made more than 200 treys in a season just once.
• In its last three games, Cornell is being outrebounded by 9.3 boards per game. In the team's first 13 games, the Big Red was -0.5 and had outrebounded opponents eight times.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES:
• Sophomore Shonn Miller has three or more steals in six games this year and has blocked two or more shots in seven others.
• In Cornell's seven wins this season, senior Errick Peck has averaged 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 45 percent from the floor. In its nine losses, Peck is averaging 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 38 percent from the field.
• Freshman Nolan Cressler has made 23 3-pointers in 16 games this season. He has hit multiple 3-pointers in eight contests (23-of-44, .523) and has been shut out in eight others (0-for-18, .000).
• With his 9-of-12 shooting effort against Longwood, senior Eitan Chemerinski jumped into first place on the school's career field goal percentage list. He surpassed the 100 field goals needed to join the list and is now at .624, ahead of all-time leader John McCord (.583).
• Since going 12-of-13 in consecutive wins over Saint Francis and Binghamton, Chemerinski has gone scoreless while missing all six field goal attempts against Bucknell and American.
• Senior Johnathan Gray is averaging 15.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in his last four games.
• After opening the year 2-of-20 from 3-point range in the first five games, Gray then went 12-of-19 over the next four games (.632). After a 1-of-19 stretch (.053), he has made 13-of-29 (.448) in his last four games (Cornell 3-1).
• In his last four contests, senior Miles Asafo-Adjei has 21 assists and five turnovers. He has taken just four shots in his 100 minutes of court time.
• Sophomore Galal Cancer has at least six points, three rebounds and three assists in three of his last four games and six times on the year.
• In his last four games, Cancer has 12 assists and four turnovers.
• Cancer is averaging 1.8 steals in his last four games.
• Junior Dominick Scelfo is averaging 12.3 points, 1.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 steals in his last three games. He has hit a 3-pointer in seven consecutive games.
