HEAD COACH BILL COURTNEY
Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his third season at Cornell (28-43, .394; 13-15 Ivy, .464) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.

STORY LINES: The Cornell men's basketball team will attempt to get on a roll heading into Ivy League play when it visits American on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at Bender Arena. The Big Red has won two of its last three games and will be looking for its first win over 2013 when it faces the Eagles.

Cornell brings a 6-9 record into the contest after a 72-56 loss at home against defending Patriot League champion Bucknell on Wednesday evening. The Big Red will be out for its third consecutive road win, something that hasn't happened since winning its final five road games to close out 2009-10. Prior to its last two road victories, Cornell had been 5-29 in true road games under head coach Bill Courtney. Cornell is now looking to even its record away from home on the year at 5-5, including a pair of neutral site victories.

The Big Red's pressure defense has been steadily improving, though its opponents' field goal percentage has been climbing as Cornell speeds up the pace. The offense has been most dangerous when it has gotten itself easy shots from the pressure. In Cornell's six wins it has scored 77.3 points per game on 48 percent shooting. In its losses - 54.8 points on 35 percent shooting. It also has a positive assist-turnover ratio and has limited opponents to 40 percent shooting in the triumphs. That has always been the case with Courtney's teams at Cornell. The defense has been a constant - and when the offense is clicking, Cornell is tough to beat. It is 20-2 when scoring 70 or more points under his tenure.

Cornell has been tremendously balanced on the offensive end, with only one player averaging in double figures, though seven players score more than 5.3 points per game. Leading the way is sophomore Shonn Miller, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Miller leads the Big Red in scoring (10.2 ppg.) and ranks second in the league in blocks (1.6 bpg.), fourth in rebounding (7.4 rpg.) and fifth in steals (1.7 spg.). Seniors Errick Peck (8.2 ppg.), Johnathan Gray (8.1 ppg.) and Eitan Chemerinski (7.9 ppg.) aren't far behind. Also among the balanced scoring group is freshman Nolan Cressler (7.1 ppg.) and sophomore Devin Cherry (6.9 ppg.) in the Big Red's 10-man rotation. Stalwart senior defender Miles Asafo-Adjei leads the team in assists (3.1), while sophomore Galal Cancer has flashed a strong all-court game (5.3 ppg., 2.7 rpg., 2.3 apg.).

A WIN OVER AMERICAN WOULD:
• make the Big Red 7-9 on the season.
• even the all-time series between the programs at 1-1.
• make Cornell 139-116 all-time against members of the Patriot League, including 3-5 under head coach Bill Courtney.
• be the 1,203rd in program history (1,202-1,317 in 114 seasons).

ABOUT AMERICAN: American brings a 5-9 overall record into Sunday's matinee after a 63-49 victory over winless Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday. The win snapped a four-game skid that began against Ivy foe Columbia and included games at both Georgetown and Kansas. Stephen Lumpkins leads the team in scoring (14.7 ppg.), rebounding (8.4 rpg.) and blocked shots (21), while Daniel Munoz is scoring 10.1 ppg. while pacing the squad in assists (3.4 apg.). American is shooting 41 percent from the floor on the season while surrendering 44 percent. The Eagles are scoring 55.8 points per outing and allowing 63.4, with six games being decided by two possessions or less. Head coach Jeff Jones is the school's all-time leader in wins (203) with four Patriot League regular season titles.

THE CORNELL-AMERICAN SERIES: American leads the all-time series 1-0 after last year's 65-63 Eagles victory at Newman Arena.

CORNELL VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: Cornell is 138-116 all-time against current members of the Patriot League, including 0-1 against American. The Big Red has also played Army (20-13), Bucknell (23-25), Colgate (71-53), Holy Cross (2-3), Lafayette (7-11), Lehigh (13-9) and Navy (2-1).

THE STREAKS
• Cornell is 100-64 (.610) in the last six seasons.
• The Big Red is 51-19 (.729) in its last 70 Ivy League contests over the last six years.
• Cornell is 58-16 (.784) over its last 72 home games.
• In non-conference games, the Big Red is 48-45 (.516) over the last six seasons vs. scholarship programs.
