Game Recap: Cornell 103, Old Westbury 84





ITHACA — For 28 minutes on Saturday afternoon, the Division III SUNY Old Westbury men’s basketball team gave Cornell all it could handle.

But for the three minutes that followed the Division I Big Red undid all of the Panthers’ earlier good work.

Cornell outscored Old Westbury 22-1 in a pivotal 3:14 stretch midway through the second half, and stormed to a 103-84 victory before a Kids’ Day crowd of 1,974 at Newman Arena.

Shonn Miller hit a 15-foot jumper with 1:26 left in the game, putting Cornell over the 100-point mark for the first time since the final game of the 1992-93 season, a 108-87 victory at Harvard. The Red hit the century mark for the 19th time in program history in improving to 8-9; the Panthers (10-3) saw their six-game winning streak end.

Senior Johnathan Gray scored 24 points, 19 in the first half, and connected on 6 of 11 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. The Big Red shot lights out as a team, connecting on 41-for-65 overall (63.1 percent) and 13 of 22 from long range (59.1 percent).

Gray, who also grabbed seven rebounds, led five double-figure scorers for coach Bill Courtney’s club. Errick Peck added 16 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Nolan Cressler chipped in 15 points, including 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range. Devin Cherry (14 points) and Galal Cancer (10 points, 4-for-4 foul shooting) rounded out the double-figure scorers.

SUNY Old Westbury, which entered the game scoring 86 points per game, did almost everything right for the first 28 minutes. The Panthers took a seven-point lead in each half, the last at 57-50 in the first three minutes of the second half, and seemed to make every shot they put up. But Cornell methodically got back in it and once the visitors missed a couple of shots, the Big Red pounced.

Cornell when on its game-changing run after trailing 63-62 with 12 minutes to play. During the stretch, Old Westbury was 0-for-5 from the floor with three turnovers, while Cornell made 10 consecutive shots, including three by Cherry.

From there, the Big Red never let the lead slip below 14 points.

Old Westbury put up impressive numbers against the Red, shooting nearly 60 percent in the first half and 50.8 percent (31-for-61) for the game. The Panthers were 13-for-26 from 3-point range and made 9 of 11 free throws.

Kerel Mitchell led Old Westbury with 22 points while Tyrik Tucker chipped in 15 points and Omari Trebuse 14 points and six assists.

Cornell will open Ivy League play when it plays host to Columbia at 3 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Network (Time Warner channel 59).

ITHACA, N.Y. -- It had been so long, no one knew exactly what happened when Cornell's scoreboard hit three digits. So when Shonn Miller hit a 15-foot jumper with 1:26 left in the game, everyone in attendance found out it would go to three numbers.

The Big Red hit the century mark for just the 19th time in program history and the second time in the past 20 years in a 103-84 victory over Division III Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena. The win improved the Big Red to 8-9, while the Panthers fell to 10-3.

Senior Johnathan Gray scored 24 points, 19 in the first half, and connected on six 3-pointers to go along with his seven rebounds to lead five double figure scorers. Cornell shot .631 for the game, the eighth-highest mark in school history, shot .591 from 3-point range (13-of-22) for 12th, connected on 13 treys (11th best) and dished off 25 assists (third-highest) in posting its most points in a regulation game since scoring 108 at Harvard in a 1993 contest.

Errick Peck scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished off three assists and blocked two shots off the bench, while Nolan Cressler knocked down 6-of-7 field goals, including all three 3-pointers, en route to 15. Devin Cherry scored 14 and Galal Cancer had 10 to round out thye double figure scorers. The Big Red's frontcourt of Shonn Miller (six points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals) and Eitan Chemerinski (nine points, seven reb ounds, two assists, three steals) also had a great effect on the game.

But it wasn't before some tense moments against a high-scoring foe.

Old Westbury, who entered the game scoring 86 points per game, did just about everything right for the first 28 minutes. The Panthers took a seven-point lead in each half, the last at 57-50 just two and a half minutes into the second half, and seemed to make every shot they put up. But Cornell methodically got back in it, and once the visitors missed a couple of shots, the Big Red pounced.

Trailing by one (63-62) with 12:10 left, Cornell took over. The Big Red went on a 22-1 run over the span of just 3:14 and a nailbiter turned into a comfortable margin for the home team. During the run, Old Westbury was 0-for-5 with three turnovers on their end, while Cornell made 10 consecutive shots, including three by Cherry. From there, it was all but over. The Big Red never led the lead slip back below 14 and hit the 100-point mark with time to spare.

As Cornell was on the way to scoring 57 second half points, the Panthers did all they could to make sure the Big Red needed to. The visitors came into the contest with plenty of confidence and hit 58 percent of its shots from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including a red-hot 60 percent from 3-point range (9-of-15). When Omari Trebuse hit a tough trey as the first half expired to give Old Westbury the 47-46 halftime lead, the Panthers had announced themselves as squarely in the game.

But while the Panthers needed to shoot the lights out to take the lead, Cornell methodically weathered the storm and answered every time it was challenged.

The Big Red rode a hot first half by Gray to answer Old Westbury's offensive performance. The senior scored 19 points, including hitting five 3-pointers in his 17 minutes of action. He was able to outscore Panthers' leading scorer Kerel Mitchell, who netted 15 before the break. Mitchell ended the day with 22 points and three steals to lead five double figure scorers for Old Westbury. Tyrik Tucker chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, Trebuse scored 14 with six assists and both Darnell Chavis and Rashawn McCarthy each had 10.

Cornell will open Ivy League play when it plays host to Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. in a game that will be televised on NBC Sports Network.

ITHACA, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team led the Cornell Big Red at half time 47-46, but were outscored 57-37 in the second half en route to falling 103-84 Saturday afternoon from Newman Arena. The loss snapped Old Westbury's six game win streak, moving to 10-3 on the season while Cornell improved to 8-9.

Old Westbury kept pace with Cornell in the first half, leading on five different occasions. Tyrik Tucker scored the game's first points on a three pointer that put Old Westbury up just 31 seconds into the game. Moments later, Devin Cherry gave Cornell their first lead with a three ball followed by a Johnathan Gray layup to cap a 7-0 run for a 7-3 Big Red advantage. Both teams combined for 10 lead changes and seven ties in a high scoring first half. Gray drained one of his five first half three pointers for a 17-10 lead with 14:05 left in the half. Old Westbury answered with a 24-10 run from 13:45 to 7:44 to take a 34-27 lead as Old Westbury hit on 10-of-11 shots over that stretch. After three more ties and a lead change, Omari Trebuse netted a three pointer with three seconds remaining to send Old Westbury into the half with a 47-46 lead.

Kerel Mitchell led Old Westbury with 15 first half points (6-8 FG) and Jonathan Gray scored 19 (7-11 FG) for Cornell. Old Westbury shot 57.6 percent from the field (19-33), including 60 percent from three point territory (9-15). Cornell hit 53.3 percent from the floor (16-30) and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc (8-14).

Old Westbury hit four of their first five shots to take a 57-50 lead out of the second half gates. Cornell answered with a 12-2 run from 17:07 to 12:19 to take a 62-59 lead. Tyrik Tucker sank a pair of free throws to put Old Westbury back up 63-62 with 12:10 showing on the clock. From there, it was all Cornell as the Big Red used a 22-1 run from 11:47 to 7:04 to grab a commanding 84-64 advantage. Ned Tomic's layup with 15 seconds left gave Cornell a 103-81 advantage, their largest lead of the game.

Kerel Mitchell poured in 22 points to rack up his eighth 20+ point scoring performance of the year, hitting on 9-of-16 from the field to go along with three steals. Tyrik Tucker followed with 15 points and three steals while Omari Trebuse tied a career high with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three point range, in addition to dishing out a game high six assists. Rashawn McCarthy and Darnell Chavis both added 10 points while Joshua Bailey recorded two blocks.
Jonathan Gray scored a game high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace Cornell to victory. Errick Peck (16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks), Nolan Cressler (15 points, 2 steals), Devin Cherry (14 points, 5 assists) and Galal Cancer (10 points, 5 assists, 2 steals) scored in double digits. Eitan Chemerinski and Shonn Miller both pulled seven rebounds.

Old Westbury finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field (31-62), 50 percent from three point territory (13-26) and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-11). Cornell shot 71.4 percent in the second half and finished the game hitting on 63.1 percent from the floor (41-65), 59.1 percent from beyond the arc (13-22) and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe (8-13). Cornell won the boards battle, 40-21, including an 11-3 advantage off the offensive glass, resulting in 20 second chance points. Old Westbury's 21 rebounds were the lowest total since registering 18 against Yeshiva on Feb. 2, 2012. Cornell also outscored Old Westbury 50-29 in the paint while the Panthers scored 32 points off 21 Big Red turnovers.
