ITHACA — For 28 minutes on Saturday afternoon, the Division III SUNY Old Westbury men’s basketball team gave Cornell all it could handle.
But for the three minutes that followed the Division I Big Red undid all of the Panthers’ earlier good work.
Cornell outscored Old Westbury 22-1 in a pivotal 3:14 stretch midway through the second half, and stormed to a 103-84 victory before a Kids’ Day crowd of 1,974 at Newman Arena.
Shonn Miller hit a 15-foot jumper with 1:26 left in the game, putting Cornell over the 100-point mark for the first time since the final game of the 1992-93 season, a 108-87 victory at Harvard. The Red hit the century mark for the 19th time in program history in improving to 8-9; the Panthers (10-3) saw their six-game winning streak end.
Senior Johnathan Gray scored 24 points, 19 in the first half, and connected on 6 of 11 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. The Big Red shot lights out as a team, connecting on 41-for-65 overall (63.1 percent) and 13 of 22 from long range (59.1 percent).
Gray, who also grabbed seven rebounds, led five double-figure scorers for coach Bill Courtney’s club. Errick Peck added 16 points and seven rebounds, and freshman Nolan Cressler chipped in 15 points, including 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range. Devin Cherry (14 points) and Galal Cancer (10 points, 4-for-4 foul shooting) rounded out the double-figure scorers.
SUNY Old Westbury, which entered the game scoring 86 points per game, did almost everything right for the first 28 minutes. The Panthers took a seven-point lead in each half, the last at 57-50 in the first three minutes of the second half, and seemed to make every shot they put up. But Cornell methodically got back in it and once the visitors missed a couple of shots, the Big Red pounced.
Cornell when on its game-changing run after trailing 63-62 with 12 minutes to play. During the stretch, Old Westbury was 0-for-5 from the floor with three turnovers, while Cornell made 10 consecutive shots, including three by Cherry.
From there, the Big Red never let the lead slip below 14 points.
Old Westbury put up impressive numbers against the Red, shooting nearly 60 percent in the first half and 50.8 percent (31-for-61) for the game. The Panthers were 13-for-26 from 3-point range and made 9 of 11 free throws.
Kerel Mitchell led Old Westbury with 22 points while Tyrik Tucker chipped in 15 points and Omari Trebuse 14 points and six assists.
Cornell will open Ivy League play when it plays host to Columbia at 3 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Network (Time Warner channel 59).
