Cornell's Wroblewski, Penn's Rosen Selected as 2011-12 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Candidates

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Ivy League saw two of its men's basketball student-athletes selected as candidates for the 2011-12 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, the company announced Friday. Cornell senior guard Chris Wroblewski and Penn senior guard Zach Rosen are among the 30 men's basketball seniors chosen.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Wroblewski was a third-team Capital One Academic All-American as a junior and has twice been named to the academic all-district team. The two-year team captain has been involved in numerous charitable endeavors and has been a four-year starter on the court. He was a key player on two conference championship teams including the Big Red's Sweet 16 run as a sophomore. Wroblewski is a two-year member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as the nation's top point guard. A second-team All-Ivy pick as a junior, he was the conference's leader in steals and was second in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and sixth in scoring.

Rosen is a two-time first-team All-Ivy and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District honoree. He posted 22 double-figure scoring games as a junior and averaged 14.3 points per game. He led Penn with 152 assists, which is fourth on the school's all-time single-season list, and became the first player in Penn history to exceed 100 assists as a freshman, sophomore and junior.

The 2011-12 candidate class includes three men's players who were members of last year's CoSIDA Academic All-American team, one Associated Press All-American and seven players who are on teams ranked in the Associated Press preseason top 25 poll.

Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the men's Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2012 NCAA Men's Final Four®, which will be held March 31 and April 2 in New Orleans. The women's award winner will be announced during the NCAA Women's Final Four®, which will be held April 1 and 3 in Denver.

The 60 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in both men's and women's basketball midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I men's and women's coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

For more information on all the candidates, visit www.seniorCLASSaward.com.

  • Slope Media's Time Weisberg will be interviewing Chris Wroblewski on November 8 and will make the podcast available on the Slope website.
  • The Boston Globe profiles Boston College freshman, Patrick Heckmann and writes, "[Steve] Donahue, in his second year at BC, had international recruiting connections from his time at Cornell and Penn, but coaching in the Ivy League, where teams can’t offer scholarships, his resources were limited. 'We got to know a lot of people that are over there,' Donahue said. 'Whether it’s owners, agents, people that run the FIBA in those countries. So you get to know the younger kids. We’ve always done that, but we never had scholarships in the Ivy. So it was hard with no foreign aid.’'"
  • Cornell will have at least four games televised during the 2011-2012 season including at Stony Brook (Cablevision 118), at Maryland (ESPN3), at Illinois (ESPN3) and at Penn State (Big Ten Network). Time Warner Cable, VerizonFios1, and Comcast Sports are among other networks that may also pick up Cornell games against Ivy League opponents such as Columbia, Princeton and Penn.
