The Cornell men's basketball team will try to snap its three-game slide on Thursday when it hosts Howard (7-8), in the Red's penultimate non-conference game. Tip-off at Newman Arena is set for 7 p.m.
ITHACA – With Ivy League play just around the corner, the Cornell men's basketball team will try to get back on the winning track Thursday when it hosts Howard University in its penultimate non-conference game. Tip-off at Newman Arena is slated for 7 p.m.
The Big Red (6-8), which hasn't played at home since Dec. 28, saw its losing streak hit three games with Saturday afternoon's 92-73 defeat at Buffalo. Cornell led by nine points with less than five minutes to play in the first half, but the Bulls outscored Cornell 17-6 the rest of the half and 22-10 in the first 71/2 minutes of the second half to take control of the game.
Thursday's game will be the first between Cornell and Howard (7-8), which hasn't played since dropping a 74-59 decision on Dec. 28 at Fordham. The Bison, led by fifth-year coach Kevin Nickelberry, is just 2-7 in true road games away from Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
Leading the way thus far for Cornell has been 6-7 senior forward Shonn Miller, who's averaging 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds, both team highs. A two-time Ivy Player of the Week, Miller has been even better recently, averaging 22 points and 10 boards in his last five games, including a career-high 28 points in a 74-61 loss at Radford on Dec. 21.
Miller has scored in double figures in 12 of Cornell's 14 games, and eclipsed the 20-point mark six times.
Sophomore guard Robert Hatter is next in scoring for Cornell, at 11.9 points per game, followed by senior point guard Devin Cherry (10.1 ppg.) and senior guard Galal Cancer (9.3 ppg.). David Onuorah (2.4 ppg.), a 6-9 sophomore forward, rounds out the starting lineup.
For Howard, it takes more than just a first name to differentiate the top three scorers. Sophomore guard James Daniel leads with 16.8 points per game, followed by sophomore swingman James Miller (12.4 ppg.) and 6-8 senior swingman James Carlton (11.9 ppg., 7.4 rpg.). Its other two starters are 6-5 sophomore Damon Collins (5.0 ppg.) and 6-11 sophomore center Marcel Boyd (2.9 ppg., 6.1 rpg.).
Howard's last outing was similar to Cornell's, in that host Fordham took a two-point lead into intermission but pulled away in the second half thanks to 17-for-26 shooting (65.4 pct.). Buffalo shot 16-for-27 from the floor in the second half against the Big Red, including 7-for-12 from 3-point range, and outscored Cornell 51-34.
Starting Thursday, Cornell plays seven of its next eight games at Newman Arena, including Saturday night's final non-conference game of the regular season, against Division III Alfred State. Saturday will be the second annual Fred Geise Memorial Kids Day at Newman Arena, with a bounce house, basketball shooting games and face-painting among the activities planned. Kids Day festivities are slated for 1 p.m., with the game slated for 2.
Cornell plays its Ivy League opener a week later at home against Columbia; the rematch on Jan. 24 in New York will be followed by two straight Ivy home weekends.

Bison Open 2015 Season at Cornell
Ithaca, NY—The Howard University men's basketball will take the court for the first time in 2015 when it plays Cornell University at Newman Arena at 7 pm tonight. The Bison (7-8) have been off since December 28 when they dropped a 75-59 road decision to Fordham. This is the first meeting between the two schools.
Cornell (6-8) has lost three in a row and four of the last five, the most recent a 93-77 road loss at Buffalo. The Big Red are 3-1 at home and have had a challenging schedule with games against Syracuse and South Carolina. They are led by senior forward Shonn Miller (16.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg), senior guard Robert Hatter (10.1 ppg) and sophomore guard Devin Cherry (11.9 ppg).
The Bison rely on their Big Three of sophomore guards James "J-Byrd" Daniel (17.0 ppg) and James "JT" Miller (11.9 ppg) and senior forward James "JC" Carlton (11.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg) for their scoring. But when Howard has had success, it has been due to their defense, which is holding opponents to 30 percent shooting from the field. Additionally, the Bison have been able to disrupt the opposition with their pressure defense, which is forcing 8 steals per game, their rebounding which is a plus 6 and their shot blocking (3.4 per game).
Although the two teams are very similar in many regards, but the Bison hold an edge in the rebounding area while the Big Red have four players who shoot over 77 percent from the free throw line.
NEXT UP: Howard resumes MEAC play this Saturday when it hosts Coppin State at 4 pm in Burr Gymnasium and then on Monday will take on surprising Delaware State at 7:30 pm in Burr.
