Above, an illustration of and poem about Gil Halstead (Cornell, class of 1914) from the March 4, 1913 issue of the Cornell Daily Sun. Halstead was a member of Cornell's back-t0-back 1912-1913 and 1913-1914 Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League (the predecessor to the Ivy League) championship teams. In addition to being named 1st Team All America in 1912-1913 and 1913-1914, Halstead was the 1913-1914 National College Player of the Year his senior year. During the 2012-2013 season Cornell will visit the University of Wisconsin. While the game is notable as a rematch of sorts from the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the game will also take place on the 100th anniversary season of Cornell's 1912-1913 conference championship in the EIBL. During the 1912-1913 season, while Cornell claimed title as the "eastern champions," Wisconsin captured the "western championship." As detailed below in a March 1, 1913 news article from the Wisconsin Daily News, the University of Wisconsin, however ultimately declined an invitation to face Cornell for a national championship game in the 1912-1913 season.
Below, a news article from the March 10, 1913 issue of the Cornell Daily Sun details the debate among several eastern based newspapers which challenged Cornell's claim as the top team in the eastern U.S.
