News and Notes: Thursday Edition

• In game 1 of the Lithuanian LKL premier league championship series, Jeff Foote's (Cornell '10) Zalgiris club cruised past Lietuvos Rytas, 88-73.

• Cornell's incoming recruit, Robert Hatter, is participating in the Chris Saiz Point the Way FoundationSenior Showcase.  Hatter is also mentioned on SB Nation as a product of the Houston Hoops AAU program.

• JSpace.com writes about Eitan Chemerinski's selection to the U.S. Senior Maccabi Games team and notes, "Eitan Chemerinski, Power Forward (6'8): Chemerinski emerged as one of the Ivy League's top offensive players down low, shooting 63 percent from the floor, ranking 2nd all-time in Cornell history. The Maryland native completed his senior season averaging 6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1 steal per match, and has been eyed by multiple top division Israeli teams."

• GoldandBlack.com, a Purdue-Rivals.com site reports on Errick Peck.  The site writes:

Purdue could add multiple fifth-year transfers to next season's team if all goes as hoped, one of those potential additions being Cornell transfer Errick Peck.

Purdue is well acquainted with the Indianapolis native and Cathedral graduate, having recruiting former high school and AAU teammate Kelsey Barlow years ago.

Tuesday, Purdue became even more acquainted with the 6-foot-6 forward, hosting him for a visit as it seeks to add him to next season's roster as an immediately eligible fifth-year transfer.

"It was good," Peck said. "We just toured around the campus and met with some faculty in the Krannert management school concerning my my grad school studies. Then we got to see the athletic facilities and whatnot."

The former Indiana All-Star will graduate from Cornell in late May, then move on to wherever he's headed next. Purdue is an option. Xavier, which will soon host him next week for a visit, is another. A decision, Peck hopes, will come by next weekend.

Duquesne and Loyola-Chicago are also options.

This past season, Peck started 11 of 29 games for Cornell and averaged just under 10 points and five rebounds per game.

Purdue currently has only 10 players on scholarship after three players transferred following the season.

He redshirted in 2011-12 due to a knee injury, affording him the option to graduate from Cornell, then use his final season of eligibility elsewhere.

"(Purdue) just told me my leadership and maturity would help," Peck said. "And the ability to be able to handle it and stretch the defense when playing the 4 or be physical when playing the 3 could help them out as well."

With three postseason departures leaving open scholarships, Purdue's needs are obvious. Coach Matt Painter may have found the quick fix.

Former Cornell guard Errick Peck, a potential fifth-year graduate-student transfer, visited Purdue on Wednesday, according to a source.

Peck, a native of Indianapolis and former standout at Cathedral High School, would be an important answer to the Boilermakers' many issues. He is a proven veteran scorer with NCAA Tournament experience.

Peck is expected to visit Xavier next week and will make a decision shortly after. A source believes Purdue is the front runner to land his services.

As a senior -- his third year of eligibility -- Peck averaged 9.7 points in 24.5 minutes per game. He missed his entire junior season due to a knee injury.

Purdue lost three players -- Sandi Marcius, Anthony Johnson and Jacob Lawson -- to transfers after the season, leaving the program along with departing seniors D.J. Byrd and Dru Anthrop. The Boilermakers do have three freshmen entering the program, but must add depth for next season.

• Mike Waters of the Syracuse Post Standard previews the ACC and Boston College and writes, "In his third year at Boston College, former Cornell coach Steve Donohue led an Eagles team with no upperclassmen in its starting lineup to a remarkable 7-11 finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference...
  Boston College will be a team to watch in 2013-14. Donohue seems to be building a team and a program in the same way that he brought along younger players as a group at Cornell and let them grow into a unit."
