ITHACA, N.Y. -- Columbia closed the game on a 23-7 run to earn the season sweep of the Ivy-opening travel partner series with Cornell, taking a 74-58 victory over the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Lions improved to 13-6 (2-0 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 1-15 (0-2 Ivy).
Devin Cherry had 12 points and five rebounds to lead three Cornell double figure scorers, with Robert Hatter added 11 points and Ned Tomic coming off the bench for 11 points and seven rebounds. Nolan Cressler had six points, six rebounds and four assists for a Cornell team that shot 38 percent overall and just 7-of-19 from the free-throw line.
Columbia shot 50 percent form the floor, though the Ivy League's top 3-point shooting team was limited to 2-of-9 from beyond the 3-point arc. The Lions were able to feast from the free-throw line, however, hitting 26-of-30 from the charity stripe. Maodo Lo scored 20 points, while Cory Osetkowski had 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Alex Rosenberg (17 points, five rebounds, four assists) and Grant Mullins (12 points, five rebounds) also reached double figures.
Right from the get-go, the Big Red was ready to challenge the Lions. While the Big Red knocked down some early shots from the outside, Columbia pounded the ball in the paint with its first six points coming off layups to take a 6-5 lead at the 16:08 mark. Back-to-back layups from Cherry put the home team back on top and opened up a 10-4 run that gave Cornell the 15-10 advantage with just over 12 minutes to play.
The Lions cut the lead to two points (18-16), but a traditional three-point play from Tomic and a deep ball from Hatter pushed Cornell's lead back to 24-18 with just under eight minutes to play.
The Lions came back by going to its big men once again, as Osetkowski and Rosenberg combined for seven consecutive to restore the lead to the visitors (25-24) with 5:12 to go in the first half.
Four unanswered points by Tomic put Cornell back on top 28-25 and the Big Red held on for a well-earned 35-32 lead at the half.
The Lions scored the first six points of the second half to spark an extended 15-6 run and take its largest lead of the game, 47-41, with 13:43 to play.
A fast break 3-pointer from Matthews brought the Newman crowd alive and opened up an 8-0 Big Red spurt that saw a jumper from the top of the key from Tomic and a deep trey from Tarwater to restore the 51-49 lead to Cornell with just under 10 to go in the contest.
A layup from Maodo Lo tied the game and ended the Cornell spurt. It also triggered a prolonged 17-2 run (66-53) that essentially sealed the game for the Lions.
The Big Red will begin its first true Ivy League road weekend when it visits Brown on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I.
With ten minutes left in the game against Columbia on Saturday, freshman guard Robert Hatter drove to the basket and, finding Columbia’s big men waiting for him in the paint, quickly dished the ball out. Senior forward Dwight Tarwater was waiting on the perimeter, and his three-pointer allowed the Red to regain the lead for the first time since the opening possession of the second half.
However, a nifty spin-move in the paint by Columbia’s Maodo Lo on the following possession silenced the crowd at Newman Arena and tied the game at 51. The Lions carried that momentum into a 13-2 extended run that crippled the Red’s chances of its first Ivy League win.
Cornell came out strong in the first half of its second consecutive matchup against Columbia, who came into the game at the top of the conference standings. The Red shot 45 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc, but the Lions kept pace, trailing by only three heading into the locker room.
The final twenty minutes told a very different story for the Red, though, as the team was eight-for-27 from the field and three-for-nine from three. The final score was not indicative of the squad’s fight in the second half, though, as the two teams traded baskets for most of it. Columbia looked as though it was going to make a run midway through the half when two free throws by Alex Rosenberg put them up by six, but a three by senior guard Jake Matthews cut the deficit in half.
The Red’s bench play was an important factor in keeping them in the game. Matthews had eight points and junior forward Ned Tomic had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Hatter chipped in with 11 points and three assists, and junior captain and guard Devin Cherry had twelve points and pulled down five rebounds. Junior guard Nolan Cressler struggled from the field, though, missing all five of his threes and scoring just six points, almost ten points below his season average.
Now 0-2 in Ivy League play, the Red will try to climb its way out of the bottom of the conference when it takes on Brown next weekend in Rhode Island.

“We really had to compete and fight hard,” sophomore guard Maodo Lo said, adding that he thought the Big Red team members played with “a chip on their shoulder” after Columbia’s home win over the Big Red a week ago.
After the layup put Columbia ahead 61-53, Cornell began fouling. But the Lions, as they have for the last three seasons, knocked down their free throws to keep the Big Red from climbing back into the game.
Rosenberg scored at least 17 points for the sixth straight game, while Lo led the Light Blue with 20 points. Junior center Cory Osetkowski scored a career-high 19 to complement his nine rebounds, leading Columbia to a 38-25 advantage in points in the paint against a smaller Cornell lineup.
“We know he’s a big force down low, and he showed that today,” Lo said. “We made sure that we were feeding him the ball. He played with a lot of confidence.”
Before Osetkowski caught fire, the Lions had some difficulty dealing with Cornell’s full-court press, which had given them some trouble in the last few minutes of last week’s win as well. But the Light Blue made some adjustments and ended up taking advantage of the pressure for some easy baskets.
“We kept it simple in our press break,” head coach Kyle Smith said. “We didn’t have as much clutter and confusion.”
Smith added that when the Lions broke Cornell’s press for some easy layups, he thought it forced the Big Red to back off a little.
Columbia will next be in action Friday at Yale.

That gave the Lions (13-6, 2-0 Ivy League) a sweep of their travel partners to open league play. A week earlier Columbia used a 16-4 run in the second half to beat the Big Red (1-15, 0-2) 71-61.
Lo and Osetkowski combined to hit 16 of 23 shots. Alex Rosenberg made 11 of 12 free throws for 17 points and Grant Mullins made 8 of 8 for 12 points.
