  • Could an Ivy League conference tournament be on the way? NBC Sports writes, "The Ivy League seems so placid and genteel from a distance, but you can bet the duck’s feet are churning like mad beneath the surface. Cornell’s Sweet 16 run in 2010 and Tommy Amaker’s arrival as head coach at Harvard, with an attendant increase in national attention to the league, has stoked up a certain amount of unrest. The Ancient Eight don’t do anything like the rest of DI does, and they’ve typically been pretty proud of that fact. The continued reliance on a full conference season that decides the NCAA tourney auto-bid, rather than a more arbitrary tournament setup, has long been a line the Ivies would not dream of crossing."
  • Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports reports that three Columbia basketball players have left the program to transfer. These players include Van Green, Samer Ozeir and Darrius Stevens. Dartmouth and Harvard join Columbia among Ivies losing players to transfer this spring. See our updated Ivy League Roster Report for roster sizes and player transactions throughout the Ivy League.
  • White & Blue Review notes Creighton's participation in the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational which will include Cornell in the field of teams. Cornell opens the tournament in November with trips to Wisconsin and Arizona State followed by a pair of games in Las Vegas at the Orleans Hotel and Casino.
  • A Harvard Crimson beat writer warns the Harvard fan base of the threats to Harvard winning its second consecutive outright league title and NCAA bid. The Crimson writes, "If there’s one thing that Harvard fans should have learned this past season, it’s that the Ivy League is no cakewalk. Even with the Ivy League’s most talented roster, the Crimson struggled to come away with wins in conference play, falling to Penn and Princeton and besting Cornell and Columbia by just four and five points, respectively. With All-Ivy honorable mention Jonathan Gray and 2012 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Shonn Miller returning, Cornell will pose a threat..."
  • See some opening remarks from former Cornell assistant coach, Jonthan Tsipis as he is named head coach of the women's program at George Washington.
  • The Springfield Republican profiled the work ethic of the Springfield Armor as the team pushes into the playoffs. The Republican writes, "'We led the league in rebounding and offensive rebounding,' [Springfield coach, Bob] MacKinnon said. 'You look around and Jeff Foote’s the only seven-footer in the league diving for loose balls.' Foote characterizes a team-wide professionalism that is symbolized during late-night shooting sessions at the Springfield YMCA. Every night the Armor are not on the road, the team has an optional shooting session at 9 p.m... MacKinnon believes his players have enough big-game experience from college and elsewhere [for the D-League Playoffs]. Foote reached the Sweet 16 with Cornell..."
  • NBA.com profiles former Cornell committed recruit, Mitchell Watt.
  • In addition to being named to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's Fab Five Team for the entire Pittsburgh Area, committed Cornell recruit Nolan Cressler was also named to the Gazette's EastXtra Fab Five Team for schools in the eastern part of the Pittsburgh metro area. The Gazette writes, "Nolan Cressler-Plum-Guard, 6-4, Sr.-Cressler scored from both the point guard and shooting guard positions, averaging 25.8 points per game, the second-highest average in the WPIAL, despite never scoring higher than 35 points in any one game, a testimony to his consistency. ... He finished his career as Plum's all-time leading scorer with 1,565 career points and also averaged 8.8 rebounds per game this season. ... Cressler is signed to play basketball at Cornell next season." The Plum Advance Leader also writes of Cressler:

Nolan Cressler knows a lot these days about being selected to all-star teams.

The Plum senior earned all-star honors last month and played in the annual Cager Classic, finishing with a game-record 38 points in a close loss.

On April 21, Plum boys basketball's all-time leading scorer will play in the prestigious Roundball Classic on the Quad-A team, as he will suit up alongside players he went to battle against so many times over the past four years.

Last week, Cressler got the nod of respect from a group of media members from throughout the state, as he earned Associated Press Quad-A second-team all-state recognition.

"It's obviously a great honor. I know how I played and my coaches know how I played," Cressler said. "To have others recognize that is special. All the hard work pays off."

The leading scorer in Quad-A this season at 25.8 points per game, Cressler surpassed the Plum career-scoring record as a senior and finished with 1,565 career points.

Cressler, who will continue his basketball and academic pursuits at Division I Cornell, was one of 12 WPIAL players to earn all-state honors overall, and one of just three WPIAL players on the three Quad-A squads.

Shaler junior Geno Thorpe, a Penn State recruit, was selected to the first team, while Butler senior Nate Snodgrass, a U.S. Naval Academy recruit, was a third-team pick.

Cressler also earned local all-star recognition, as he joined Gateway seniors Tyler Scott and Barnett Harris, Woodland Hills senior Shakim Alonzo and Penn Hills senior Shy Faulkner on the All-Section 2-AAAA team in a vote of the section coaches.

After so many battles the past couple of seasons, Harris, Scott, Alonzo and Cressler will be on the same side at the Roundball Classic at Geneva College.

"I definitely know a lot of people are excited for that," Cressler said. "Great players have played in past games. There is so much tradition. It will be fun to be a part of."

  • Throughout the year we provide periodic updates on Cornell's alumni playing professionally. Below, some updates:
-Jeff Aubry ('99) (Halcones Rojos, LNBP Mexico premier league/Arecibo Capitanes, BSN Puerto Rico premier league)-As of April 15, Aubry is averaging 2.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for Arecibo in the BSN Puerto Rico premier league. Arecibo is 10-9 and in 6th place out of 8 teams in the league. Aubry, a 6'11" center, splits his time in both the Mexican and Puerto Rican professional leagues. Aubry holds citizenship in Puerto Rico and with Puerto Rico participating in the FIBA 2012 Olympics Qualifying Tournament this coming July, he has been mentioned as a potential member of the national team roster and could find himself in the 2012 Summer Olympic games. A well traveled pro player, Aubry spent several seasons in the NBA D League in the early part of his career with the Fayetteville Patriots and Florida Flame and earned honorable mention all NBA D League in 2002. During his more than a decade of pro experience, Aubry has also played professionally in the ABA (Miami Tropics) and abroad in Puerto Rico (Arecibo, Leones de Ponce, and Santurce, BSN Puerto Rico), Spain (Tarragona, LEB Gold Spain 2nd Division), Mexico (Halcones Rojos and Chihuahua Dorados, LNBP Mexico premier league), Poland (Slask Wroclaw, PLK Poland premier league), Argentina (Libertad Sunchales, Liga A Argentina), Uruguay (Hebraica, LUB Uruguay )and Peru (Alas Peruanas, Peru).

-Cody Toppert ('05) (Logitravel Mallorca, LEB Gold Spain 2nd Division)-As of April 15, Toppert is averaging 4.1 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Mallorca is 14-18 and in 14th place out of 18 teams in the LEB Gold (2nd Division). Prior to joining Mallorca midseason, Toppert averaged 6.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game during 2011-2012 for Ourense in the Spanish LEB Silver (3rd Division). During his pro career, Toppert, a 6'4" wing forward, has played in the NBA D-League with the former club, the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (now the Canton Charge). He also played in Spain (Ourense, LEB Silver Spain 3rd Division), England (Plymouth Raiders, British Basketball League), Italy (Forli, LegaDue Italy 2nd division), the CBA (Great Falls Explorers), as well as in Portugal (Barriernese, LCB Portugal premier league), Bulgaria (BC CSKA Sofia, NBL Bulgaria premier league), Germany (Goettingen/Scholz Weissenhorn, BBK Bundesliga Germany premier league) and New Zealand (Taranaki Mountain Airs, NBL New Zealand premier league).

-Jason Hartford ('08) (Unsigned free agent)-As of April 15, Hartford is unsigned for the 2011-2012 season. He was cut during the week of October 17 by Cader Rocha, LUB Uruguay premier league and is now a free agent. He was averaging 12.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, second on the team in both categories. The 6'9" Hartford previously played professionally in Portugal (Ginasio, LCB Portugal premier league), Finland (Huima, Korisliiga Finland premier league) and Mozambique (Maxaquene, D1 Mozambique premier league).

-Louis Dale ('10) (Goettingen, BBK Bundesliga Germany premier league)-As of April 15, Dale is out for the season with a torn ACL. He was averaging 11.9 points, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game before the injury. Dale is in his second professional season, both seasons in Germany with Goettingen.

-Ryan Wittman ('10) (Unsigned free agent)-As of April 15, Wittman is unsigned for the 2011-2012 season after he terminated his contract on September 26 with Zastal of the PLK Poland premier league. He played the 2010-2011 season in Italy (Forli, LegaDue Italy 2nd division) and in the United States (Fort Wayne Mad Ants, NBA D-League).http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=7340341118673898826

-Jeff Foote ('10) (New Orleans Hornets, NBA/Springfield Armor, NBA D-League)-As of April 15, Foote is averaging 15.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game in the D-League after being named a starter at the D-League's All-Star Game during February. Foote is ranked 4th in the D-League in double-doubles and is also 4th in the league in rebounds. Springfield finished the regular season 29-21 (1st place out of 8 teams in the Eastern Conference) and clinched a playoff spot. Foote averaged 1.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game in 4 games for the NBA's New Orleans Hornets during a 10-day contract between March 9 and March 19. Foote is ranked by the D-League as its #6 overall NBA prospect and also ranked by the NBA D-League as the top center in the 2012 NBA D-League Playoffs. He participated in the Portland Trailblazers' 2011-2012 preseason training camp and played the 2011-2012 preseason with with Zastal of the PLK Poland premier league and the full 2010-2011 season in Spain (Melilla, LEB Gold Spain 2nd division) while on loan from Euro League powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel.

-Adam Wire ('11) (Unsigned free agent)-As of April 15, Wire is an unsigned free agent. He was waived by Vaerlose, Denmark BBK premier league during December. He was averaging 11.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.9 assists per game. On November 4, 2011 he was named the Eurobasket Player of the Week for Denmark. The 2011-2012 season is his rookie year.

-Aaron Osgood ('11) (Unsigned free agent)-As of April 15, Osgood is an unsigned free agent. He was waived by Vaerlose, Denmark BBK premier league during December. He was averaging 11.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. The 2011-2012 season is his rookie year.
