STORY LINES: Year in and year out, the Penn-Princeton road trip has been treacherous for Ivy League foes. The Cornell men's basketball team will take the challenge when it visits Penn on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. before heading to Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. The games can be viewed live on the Ivy League Digital Network, or you can listen to Barry Leonard's radio call on HITS 103.3 FM.
Cornell has played some good basketball despite its 1-17 start, with two of the losses coming to 2013 NCAA Final Four squads (Syracuse, Louisville) and six total coming at the hands of 2013 postseason squads (Syracuse, Louisville and Notre Dame - NCAA, Stony Brook - NIT, Loyola - CIT, Western Michigan - CBI) that went a combined 161-58 a year ago. Cornell has shown glimpses of really good play despite its heavy reliance on underclassmen and inexperienced upperclassmen. Three of the team's top five scorers are freshmen or sophomores and the three top upperclassmen had made a combined 23 career starts entering the year. The Big Red led then-No. 8/7 Syracuse by 14 points in the first half and by six at the break, led a Loyola (MD) team that won 23 games a year ago by seven points with five minutes remaining and had a 19-point advantage against Binghamton with 13 minutes left and a 10-point lead with four minutes to play against Siena and led Western Michigan in the second half. Cornell went on to drop all five games.
The Big Red backcourt has been its strength, with its three starting guards leading the team in scoring. Sophomore guard Nolan Cressler has had an All-Ivy season for the Big Red, averaging 16.3 points and 4.6 rebounds, while junior Devin Cherry isn't far behind at 11.6 ppg., 4.1 rpg. and 3.1 apg. Senior forward Dwight Tarwater has been a consistent threat, especially on the backboards, and is posting 6.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per night. Freshman Robert Onuorah (2.8 ppg., 3.3 rpg., 0.6 bpg.) and junior Deion Giddens (3.8 ppg., 3.1 rpg., 0.6 bpg.) are holding down the middle, while senior guards Dominick Scelfo (3.1 ppg., 1.0 apg.) and Jake Matthews (3.9 ppg.) and freshman guard Darryl Smith (4.2 ppg., 1.8 rpg.) are providing firepower off the bench. The Big Red is scoring 64.9 points on 42 percent shooting. Much of Cornell's troubles have come on the defensive end, where the team is allowing 78.9 points on 48 percent shooting, including 40 percent from 3-point range.
A WIN OVER PENN WOULD:
• snap a 10-game Ivy League losing streak.
• give the Big Red its first road win after 13 straight defeats.
• be the 1,211th in program history (1,210-1,343 in 114 seasons).
ABOUT PENN:
• Penn enters the weekend with a 4-13 overall record and is 1-2 in Ivy League play, though its lone conference win was a 77-74 win over Princeton.
• The Quakers have lost three of their last four games since the win over the Tigers, including consecutive road games to Dartmouth (67-58) and Harvard (80-50).
• Four Quakers are averaging double figures, with Tony Hicks leading the way at 14.8 ppg. He is joined by Miles Cartwright (11.8 ppg.), Fran Dougherty (11.7 ppg., 7.0 rpg.) and Darien Nelson-Henry (11.5 ppg., 6.4 rpg.).
• Penn is shooting 44 percent from the floor and 35 percent from 3-point range, but have allowed opponents to shoot better than 40 percent from 3-point range.
• In Ivy play, Penn has shot just 7-of-32 from 3-point range (22 percent) and has allowed foes to connect on 27-of-62 from beyond the arc (44 percent).
• Former Penn great Jerome Allen is in his fourth full season directing the Quakers' program and has a 52-78 overall record.

• T.J. Bray is having a fantastic senior season, averaging 17.8 points, 5.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 55 percent from the floor and 43 percent from 3-point range.
• Will Barrett (12.4 ppg.) and Hans Brase (12.3 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) also score in double figures for the Tigers.
• Princeton has allowed opponents to hit just 91 total 3-pointers in its 17 games (5.4 per game) while hitting 10.5 per contest themselves.
• Third-year head coach Mitch Henderson has guided the Tigers to consecutive 10-win Ivy seasons.
