News and Notes: Friday Edition

Get all the information you need about Cornell's games at Penn, Friday, February 7, 2014 and at Princeton, Saturday, February 8, 2014 with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center.  Below, news and notes for Friday...

  • Here is the preview on NBA.com for tonight's game for Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) and the Springfield Armor.
PENN V. CORNELL
The reports of Cornell’s death may have been greatly exaggerated. After I trumpeted their ineptness from the mountaintop last week, the Ithaca boys proved me wrong by…losing two more games. But they were kind of close! The Big Red took a lead into halftime on the road against Brown, then fell by four the next night at Yale. Leading scorer Nolan Cressler got a little support from his teammates, particularly Devin Cherry, who combined with Cressler to score 48 points against the Bulldogs. And, would you look at that, Cornell moved three whole spots up Ken Pomeroy’s national rankings—all the way to 342nd. I call that progress.
Pick: PENN
  • The Harvard Crimson misprints a 2009-2010 Cornell statistic and writes, "The Crimson is outscoring its opponents by over 20 points a game in conference play—which, if it holds up, would smash the record of the 2009-2010 Cornell Big Red (15.4 point margin of victory) as the standard for modern league dominance."  Back in 2010, Cornell outscored its opponents by 16.2 points per game.
  • The Sports Network writes (via the Chicago Tribune), "For every Syracuse and Wichita State - the last two undefeated programs in college basketball - there inevitably are a few squads that just can't seem to generate many positive outcomes. At this point in the 2013-14 season, those have-nots are Cornell, Grambling State and Southern Utah, each of which has registered just one victory against a sub-Division I opponent now that we are into the first week of February."
...Penn (4-13, 1-2 Ivy) hopes to reverse its fortunes with Columbia and Cornell (1-17, 0-4 Ivy) coming to the friendly confines of The Palestra. The Quakers have seen a mixed bag of contributors for fifth-year head coach Jerome Allen this season as he has deployed nine different starting lineups through 17 games. Senior forward Fran Doughtery (11.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg) has been the mainstay, starting every game and averaging 27.8 minutes per contest.
Conversely, the Big Red boasts three players who have started all 18 games for head coach Bill Courtney -- sophomore guard Nolan Cressler (16.3 ppg. 4.6 rpg), junior guard Devin Cherry (11.6 ppg, 3.1 apg) and senior forward Dwight Tarwater (6.0 ppg, 5.9 rpg).
