News and Notes: Tuesday Edition

Penn and Princeton visit Newman Arena this weekend.  Below, news and notes for Tuesday...

• Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) and his club, Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania) face Panathinaikos (Greece) on February 21 in the EuroLeague.

• The Ivy League published its weekly release and listed its weekly honorees, naming Jon Gray to the honor roll.  The Ivy Office writes with respect to Cornell:

Princeton (12-9, 5-2 Ivy) remains squarely in the title hunt and remains away from home this weekend with games at Columbia (10-12, 2-6 Ivy) and Cornell (13-12, 5-3 Ivy) to close a four-game road swing. The Tigers look to stay close to the League leader and create some separation from Cornell, which comes in just one game behind them in the loss column.  The Big Red enters its Friday game with Penn (6-18, 3-4 Ivy) as one of the League's hottest teams with a three-game winning streak and victories in four of its last five games.

• Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 19 is No. 198 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 222 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 202.  Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
