- The Greensboro News and Record notes that N.C. State's Jay Lewis, had an offer from Cornell coming out of high school.
- Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) and his Zalgiris team face CSKA Moscow on Friday in the EuroLeague Top 16.
- The Ithaca Journal writes:
ITHACA — Cornell forward Shonn Miller, last year’s Ivy League Rookie of the Year, has been named to this year’s All-Ivy League men’s basketball first team, the league office announced Wednesday.Senior Errick Peck closed his Cornell career by being named honorable mention. All-league voting was done by the league’s eight head coaches.Miller was joined on the first team by Player of the Year Ian Hummer, a senior from Princeton; junior Sean McGonigal of Brown; Harvard freshman Siyani Chambers (also the Rookie of the Year); and Harvard sophomore Wesley Saunders.A 6-7, 210-pound sophomore from Euclid, Ohio, Miller averaged 11.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.9 blocks in 27 starts. He shot 48 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the foul line. Miller posted 18 double-figure games and four double-doubles. He led the league in defensive rebounding (5.5 per game) and was third in blocks and second in steals.Miller, who missed the last four games of the season for unspecified personal reasons, joined Hummer as the only players to rank in the top 10 in Ivy scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals.Peck, a 6-6 forward from Indianapolis who earned his first All-Ivy recognition, averaged 9.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 29 contests, including 11 starts. He was even better in Ivy play, averaging 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists while shooting 46 percent from the floor.Peck, who missed his junior season due to injury, tied a single-game school record by making all eight field goals as part of a 20-point, five-rebound effort in a win at Pennsylvania on Feb. 2. Peck scored a career-high 28 points at Dartmouth and averaged 18 points and 5.3 rebounds in the final four games of his career.Cornell finished the season 13-18 overall and 5-9 in the league in its third season under coach Bill Courtney. The Big Red will return two starters and seven letterwinners in 2013-14.
- Below, a review of Newman Area from StadiumJourney.com:
Newman Arena (map it)512 Campus RdIthaca, NY 14853Year Opened: 1990Capacity: 4,473
Ithaca, New York and the Cornell University campus just make you wish you were back in school (and had the intelligence and resources for an Ivy school education). The hilly campus and the quaint and snowy downtown help to get you in the sentimental spirit before the basketball game at Newman Arena, located in Bartels Hall. The campus is an eclectic mix of old architecture and new architecture and it is well worth the first-time visitor’s time when visiting Cornell.Newman Arena is located within Bartels Hall, sharing a home with the Cornell hockey team which plays its games at Lynah Rink, described by one fan as the Cameron Indoor Stadium of college hockey.Newman Arena seats 4,472 spectators, and while the atmosphere is little to write home about, the overall experience of enjoying your time in Ithaca makes this visit worthwhile for stadium travelers.Cornell’s basketball success is limited, but somewhat recent. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 the team won the Ivy League and made an appearance in the NCAA basketball tournament (their first conference championship since 1988). In 2010, the Big Red advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to Kentucky. The success was short-lived however as the current basketball experience is decidedly flat.
3.0What is FANFARE?The FANFARE scale is our metric device for rating each stadium experience. It covers the following:
- Food & Beverage
- Atmosphere
- Neighborhood
- Fans
- Access
- Return on Investment
- Extras
Each area is rated from 0 to 5 stars with 5 being the best. The overall composite score is the "FANFARE Score".Food & Beverage 3Concessions are served at the Big Red Concessions out in the main concourse. While there is nothing that I would consider to be spectacular on the menu, the selection is decent and quality is pretty good as well. Philly Cheese Steak ($6), cheeseburger ($4.75), pizza slices ($3 or $3.25), sausages ($5), and hot dogs ($3) comprise the main offerings. Snacks include nachos ($3.50), peanuts ($3.75), pretzels ($3), candy ($3), and popcorn in three sizes ($2, $3, or $4).Hot drinks are available for $2 including hot cider, coffee, and cocoa. Pepsi products are featured ($2.25) with bottled water ($2) and Gatorade ($2.75) also on hand. This is an in-campus facility and no alcohol is served.Atmosphere 2Seating within Newman Arena is primarily wooden bleachers. However, sections WB, WC, and WD are temporary red plastic chairback seats with cupholders available in the arm rests. Because they are temporary seats, they are rather flimsy and you may very well have your neighbor pressing into your legs. Ushers are on duty to protect these seats from the properly ticketed fans, so if you're thinking of buying a cheaper ticket and sneaking in to this section, it's probably not worth your while.I would recommend the wooden bleacher seats, although somewhat uncomfortable, at least they're not going anywhere. There are also four rows of wooden bleachers under each basket, which provide a nice up-close view of the game action. It's definitely a no frills experience when you see a Cornell basketball game. There is no pep band, and many of the media timeouts go by without any entertainment at all, except for the piped in 80's music over the PA. The cheerleading squad of 24 or so does their part, and have some pretty unique formations when given the chance during time outs. The scoreboard is very basic, hanging over center court and displaying only the time, score, period, team fouls, and the last committed foul. There are two additional scoreboards above the bleachers seats on each baseline.Neighborhood 4The campus itself makes this arena worth visiting, but there are several good places to eat and drink before or after the game as well. I made a stop into Agava, which serves somewhat upscale and inventive Mexican food, along with a solid selection of beers and cocktails. The rustic and hip interior with separate bar and dining areas is a good place to spend some time, although the restaurant can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights so be there by 5pm if you want to get dinner before tipoff. They also boast that they serve "farm-to-table food," and where possible source their ingredients from local producers.Downtown, you should make a stop in to the Ithaca Ale House. They serve burgers and sandwiches with additional specials that elevate the standard pub food a bit. On the night of my visit they were serving lobster mac & cheese which was very good indeed, along with a great selection of beers on tap. It's a friendly environment with plenty of TVs to stay on top of the day's sporting events.Fans 3The student section is located at half court, opposite the benches. They are in a great location to have an impact, but their numbers are severely lacking. I appreciate their unique way of interacting with the referees, which is sort of a "kill-em-with-kindness" approach. You'll hear the students referring to the officials as "sir" and praising them with compliments like "eagle eye" throughout the contest. When protesting a call you may hear "I disagree with that call sir." If you have the chance, try to find a spot in the back end of this small student section and enjoy the conversation. You'll be at center court, facing the benches so these may be the best seats regardless of the student section. The rest of the crowd is sparsely filled with polite applause at the appropriate junctures. Overall, it is less than an inspiring atmosphere from the fans, but the students are somewhat unique.Access 3Lesson one is that Newman Arena is located within Bartels Hall, so if you cruise the campus looking for Newman, you will likely end up at one of the student dormitories. Instead, be on the lookout for Bartels Hall, located at 512 Campus Road.Cornell is located at the southern end of the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York, just to the south and east of Cayuga Lake. The interstate does not run conveniently by Ithaca, and it is perhaps a 25-30 minute drive from I-81 running north/south or 45 minutes from I-86 running east/west.The Cornell campus is rather hilly, and if you're driving through in the afternoon, be aware of the many student crosswalks and the propensity of students, assured of the right of way, to pop out in front of your vehicle. Parking is free and located directly across from Bartels Hall and next to Schoellkopf Field, home of the Cornell football team.Once you enter the arena you will be at floor level. You can either go straight ahead if you are in one of the lower seats, or climb the stairs for most of the bleacher seating. The concession stand is off a little ways from the main floor, but is not terribly inconvenient.Return on Investment 4Tickets to Cornell basketball games are a very good deal, but adults and seniors can save an additional $2 per ticket by purchasing in advance. If you wait until the day of the game then reserved seats (those somewhat wobbly chairback seats) are $12, adult bleacher seats are $10, seniors are $9, and children 12 & under are $6. Cornell also conveniently offers tickets for away games on their athletics website, a great service for devoted fans who like to travel with their team. With free parking and reasonable concessions, you'll certainly get your money worth when you come to Ithaca for a Cornell basketball game.Extras 2The floor in Newman Arena looks old, in a good way. It looks like it is out of a set from the movie Hoosiers. However, looks can be deceiving. This floor was actual placed in Newman Arena back in 2000 after some pipes burst and flooded the old floor. Still, the effect is visually pleasing and fits well with a historic institution like Cornell. One extra point for the unique way that the Cornell students interact with the officials. I loved the consistent politeness, which was pulled off without sarcasm, shown toward the referees, and the fact that every call that went against the Big Red wasn't treated as a "bad call." Only the decisions by the referees that were clearly questionable to the impartial eye received scrutiny, and even then it was done with the utmost respect.Final ThoughtsSometimes it is not the arena itself or the play on the floor that makes a journey special. It can also be the surrounding campus, unique restaurants, or unusual fans that can make a visit worthwhile. If I thought of only the experience in the gym, then this experience would probably rate below average. When considering all that comes with a visit to Cornell, then you can be assured that this is a trip worth making.

- Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 14 is No. 249 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 266 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 259. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
