News and Notes: Friday Edition

It is Senior Weekend for Wroblewski and his classmates. • At approximately 4 pm today on ESPN 1160, Brian Delaney will speak with Jon Jaques ('10), currently an assistant coach with Division III's Stevens Tech in New Jersey. Jaques played professionally in Israel last season. Listen free and live from the station website.
  

• The Syracuse Post Standard writes, "Cornell closes out the regular season Friday and Saturday with home games against Dartmouth and Harvard. The Saturday night contest against the Crimson will be televised on ESPN3. The Big Red will have a chance to knock Harvard out of the Ivy League championship. Cornell is 11-15 overall, but 6-6 in the Ivy and 9-2 at Newman Arena. It will be the final contests for Cornell senior guard Chris Wroblewski, the lone remaining starter from the school’s Sweet 16 team (2009-10). Wroblewski is Cornell’s only two-time Academic All-American. He is a member of the school’s 1,000-point club and will likely break Louis Dale’s record for most assists."

• The Harvard Crimson lists several athletic events to watch in March and writes, "March 2nd-3rd: Men's Basketball vs. Columbia and Cornell After Penn’s victory against Harvard in late February, Harvard is no longer assured a ticket to the NCAA tournament. This pairing of games will determine the Crimson's fate. With two wins, Harvard will be guaranteed a share of the Ivy title; with two loses, however, Harvard will likely be out of the running for the tournament. In addition, depending on the success of other conference teams in this last weekend of the season, the Ivy title could be split in a variety of ways in the end. Overall, March 2nd and 3rd will determine the fate of the Crimson's bid to the NCAA tournament, as well as the Ivy title."

• Predicting the weekend games, the Harvard Crimson writes:

DARTMOUTH (5-23, 1-11) AT CORNELL (11-15, 6-6)

Last weekend, the Big Green had the chance to stun Penn at home, nearly tying the game with 12 seconds to go on a Jvonte Brooks and-one layup. But Brooks missed the ensuing free throw, Rosen hit two from the charity stripe (they call it that for a reason, Jvonte!), and that was that. Classic Dartmouth.

The only thing remotely interesting about this game is that if the Big Green’s Gabas Maldunas (9.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.3 BPG) goes off, he could possibly overtake Cornell’s Shonn Miller (9.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 1.8 BPG) for the league’s Rookie of the Year.

If basketball doesn’t work out for those two, I suggest they team up and star in a buddy cop movie called “Gabotage.” They’d be the best Lithuanian-Ohioan BFF combo since Big Z and LeBron.

Pick: Cornell 68, Dartmouth 57

HARVARD AT CORNELL

Would there be anything—and I mean ANYTHING—in the world that would make the Cornell Basketball Blog happier than the Big Red ending the Crimson season by winning this one? Save for the Knicks signing Jeff Foote and then trading Jeremy Lin to Morgan Stanley for Ryan Wittman, I don’t think so.

This game will be tough; traveling to Ithaca for Saturday contests always is. Add in the fact that it’s the Senior Night of Chris Wroblewski and Andrew Ferry (who, after going to the Sweet 16 as sophomores, won’t want to end their careers with a loss), the fact that the game is on ESPN3 (Harvard is 2-7 over the past two years on ESPN affiliates), and the fact that the Big Red has topped Yale and Princeton at home, and I am sufficiently terrified.

Because quite honestly, the Crimson look lost offensively right now. This just doesn’t feel like the same Harvard squad which you knew last season would reliably hit its threes at home and which would come back against an inferior team no matter how much it was down by. And it isn’t.

The defense has kept the ship afloat all year, but—despite the fact that it brought everyone back from 2011’s team and added to them a talented group of freshmen—the offense has struggled to find any sort of flow all season long. Last year, the Crimson scored at least 68 points in 11 of its 14 Ivy games. In 2012, it’s hit that mark just three times, with a high of just 71.

Nobody has emerged that the team can rely on to score in a tight game down the stretch. That could not have been more evident this weekend, when Rosen took over for the Quakers while the Crimson was left with last year’s Player of the Year—Keith Wright—sitting on the bench and a freshman, Corbin Miller, taking the biggest shot of the season.

It’s gotten to the point where, during the timeout before Casey’s charge Saturday, I turned to my co-beat writer, Martin Kessler, and asked what he would call. Neither of us had an answer. Instead, we both had a sinking feeling that “oh crap, now they have to score.”

If the Crimson is going to win this weekend, somebody needs to step up and knock down shots. If Laurent Rivard, Oliver McNally, and Corbin Miller combine to go 2-for-9 again from deep and Wright doesn’t reestablish himself as a dominant force inside, Harvard could be in trouble.

But this is a veteran squad fully aware of the magnanimity of the situation, and I imagine it will find a way to win. A loss here would be a bigger stomach-punch than that thrown by Nicholas Cage during his future guest appearance on “Gabotage.”

Pick: Harvard 65, Cornell 59

• The Daily Princetonian writes, "As the Ivy League season motors to its finish, the men’s basketball team will take the floor against Yale and Brown this weekend knowing that the title is perhaps only mathematically in reach. Table-topper Harvard plays Columbia and Cornell for its last two contests, the former of which has lost the last five. A single win will elevate the Crimson beyond the reach of the resurgent Tigers."
  

• Cornell's game on Saturday evening in Ithaca against Harvard, which will be broadcast on ESPN3, will include pre-game ceremonies honoring-- Chris Wroblewski, Max Groebe, Anthony Gatlin and Andrew Ferry, Cornell's graduating seniors.
  

• Alex Compton ('97), a former All Ivy League selection during the 1996-1997 season and a transfer to Cornell from St. Joseph's (PA), is quoted in the Philippine Star. Compton is the director of the Nokia National Basketball Training Center Developmental League in the Philippines. He had a longstanding pro career in that country.
  

• Jeff Foote (Cornell '10), an NBA D-League All Star, and his Springfield Armor are back in action tonight at Maine. All D-League games are broadcast online via Futurecast on the league website. The Springfield Republican notes that the Armor are now in first place in the Eastern Division and writes, "On the court, the Armor are led by All-Stars Jerry Smith, JamesOn Curry and Jeff Foote. This week's All-Star game saw all three players making their mark. Curry led the East with 25 points and eight assists. Smith had 14 points, six assists and five rebounds. Foote had a team-high seven rebounds. Smith also competed on the team that won the skills competition."

Outstanding Student Athlete: Robert Mischler

On any other team, Robert Mischler would be the star. And he'd get all the attention and the accolades that go along with that.

But when you're on the same team as Demetrius Jackson, one of the most sought-after college recruits in the country, you kind of fly under the radar.

"I don't mind that, says Mischler, a senior guard at Marian. "Flying under the radar is fine with me. Because Demetrius, like you said, deserves all that attention. Because he's the best player around in my opinion."

It should be noted that not every kid in that situation always takes that attitude. To have a younger player steal the spotlight, it's not uncommon to see the older kid develop an attitude problem. But not every kid is Robert Mischler.

"The team is always first, in my opinion," Mischler says. "As long as we keep winning games, I don't have to be the star, or anything like that."

"He's just a great teammate," says Marian's coach, Robb Berger.

And a great player, in his own right. Mischler is one of the most dead-eye outside shooters in the state.

"He's old school," Berger says. "A lot of people in the olden days used to shoot it like that, but you don't see it anymore. And he can step out 24, 25 feet."

"I've been shooting a basketball since I was five years old," Mischler says. "So I like to say that I take pride in my shooting."

And just as much pride in his academics. Not only will Mischler play Division I college hoops next season, but he'll play at Cornell, an Ivy League school. Mischler carries a 4.37 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He's ranked sixth in his class, and was one of just 22 area students that congressman Joe Donnelly nominated for the U.S. service academies.

When you have a kid like that on your team, "you get a team that's 18-3 and into the second round of the sectional," Berger says. "He's great to be around. Kids like being around him and they want to play hard with, and for, a kid like that."

A star who is just beginning to shine.

• Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of March 2 is No. 172 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 210 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 205 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
