GAME NOTES: The Harvard Crimson will to attempt to clinch at least a share of the Ivy League title as they head to Newman Arena in Ithaca, New York for a clash with the Cornell Big Red.
The Crimson picked up a 71-60 victory over Cornell on Feb. 3 in the first meeting of this season. The loss dropped Cornell's lead in the all-time series to 90-71.
Harvard added to its a program record for wins in a season as it improved to 25-4 overall with its 77-70 overtime victory over Columbia on Friday night. The Crimson played very well offensively as they hit 56.2 percent of their field goal attempts and assisted on 66.6 percent of their total shots. Harvard also won the rebounding battle, 28-23, to withstand the inspired performance put forth by Columbia. Tommy Amaker's team will clinch a share of the Ancient Eight crown with a win today, and will be the outright Ivy champs if Penn loses one of its two remaining games.
It took a complete team effort for Harvard to power past Columbia on Friday. Kyle Casey's 19 points were a team-best and Keith Wright made an impact with 16 points and eight rebounds. Down the stretch, Brandyn Curry made a crucial three-pointer with two minutes remaining and Oliver McNally scored seven points in overtime to keep the team in the great position to claim the Ivy League crown. Curry does not typically light it up, but he has proven to be a great passer (eight assists vs. Cornell) and a clutch performer overall.
Cornell managed to pick up a 70-57 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green on Friday. Johnathan Gray scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 22 minutes of action, while Drew Ferry added 16 points. Senior leader Chris Wroblewski carved his name in Cornell's record books in the contest, as he now has 475 career assists. Wroblewski finished the game with 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Wroblewski, Ferry, and reserve Max Groebe will be playing their final game for the Big Red in this one.
After the season Harvard has put together, anything less than a trip to the NCAA Tournament would be a major disappointment. If the Crimson win tonight, Penn will have to beat Yale and Princeton in order to tie them in the standings. A loss will not only make it easier on the Quakers, it will also give them a chance at leaving Harvard in the dust. Being the best team in a league is never easy, as the top squads always get the best shot from each of its brethren. Cornell is going to be playing with a lot of emotion as it celebrates its seniors. The Crimson should be able pick up a victory despite what will be a spirited Cornell effort.
