News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Monday...

• Cornell guard, Galal Cancer is quoted in the Troy Record about his participation in the Capital District Basketball Association Summer League.  “Because there’s so much talent here, I’m able to push myself and actually compete harder,” he said.

• Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) (above) is a a member of the Brooklyn Nets' summer league roster.  Visit the Summer League website for game times and online viewing information. Nets Daily writes, "One thing's for sure: whether this trade goes through or not, the Nets will need bodies to fill out their roster come October. Salary cap restraints brought on by the re-signing of Deron Williams and Gerald Wallace; the trade for Joe Johnson and a possible acquisition of Dwight Howard (or alternately, a max contract for Brook Lopez) will mean a number of minimum salaried players at the end of the bench.  That's where the summer league, which starts Monday at 11 a.m., comes in. In addition to MarShon Brooks(who may or may not be with the team at week's end), the Nets will be auditioning newly signed draft pick Tyshawn Taylor; D-League center Jeff Foote; former lottery picks Adam Morrison and Al Thornton; and camp sensation Toko Shengelia. Monday's game as well as the rest of the games will be carried on NBA TV."  Foote is interviewed on the Nets' official website.

• The New York Post writes:

One of the nice things about going to Summer League practice for the past few days is the amount of access we've been able to get.

On both Friday and Saturday, I've been able to sit and watch the team work out for close to an hour, which gives you a chance to get a better read on how things are going.

I took notes on the Saturday session, and will go through my thoughts on it below:

— It seems like the most likely starting five in Monday's opener against the Magic — based off of what I saw Saturday — will be Tyshawn Taylor at the point, MarShon Brooks at the two, Tornike Shengelia at the three, Al Thornton at the four and Jeff Foote at the five.

That group spent an extended period of time playing together in Saturday's scrimmage, with Julian Wright subbing in for Thornton after awhile. The fact that Taylor, Brooks and Foote are projected starters should come as no surprise — Taylor and Brooks were always expected to start, and Foote has plenty of experience with the organization after spending much of last season — outside of a brief call-up to the Hornets — with the Springfield Armor, the Nets' D-League affiliate.

— One player who doesn't have to worry about not making the trip is Brooks, who should put up some huge numbers in Orlando. Brooks again proved his scoring ability yesterday, making a beautiful, snaking drive to the basket, absorbing contact from Foote and converting the and-one.

He also made a pair of jumpers late in practice in traffic — one a pull-up from above the foul line after a pick-and-roll by Foote, and another over two defenders from about 20 feet that went in as the buzzer sounded.
