News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Monday...

  • Division I men's basketball teams will commence full team practices in accordance with NCAA Rules on Friday evening, October 12.  Cornell's training camp is expected to include two "secret" closed-door (not open to the public) scrimmages against other college teams.  The third NCAA permitted scrimmage/exhibition will consist of the Red-White Game on October 20 at 6 pm.  The Red-White Game coincides with Cornell's Junior Weekend, a recruiting event for high school prospects in the class of 2014.  Cornell opens the season on November 10 against Western Michigan.  At halftime, Cornell will honor the 25th anniversary of its 1988 Ivy League title team.  The game also coincides with Cornell's Alumni and Friends Weekend which welcomes back former players to Ithaca.
  • On Saturday, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) scored 5 points for his Lithuanian team, Zalgiris, as they overcame Lokomotiv Kuban in Krasnodar, Russia in VTB League action, an international basketball league drawing teams from several countries in Eastern Europe.  Former University of Florida star, Nick Calathas, scored 15 points for Lokomotiv, the #21 ranked team in Europe.  Zalgirs is currently #26.  Zalgirs faces Cedevita of Croatia on October 11 in the opening of the Euroleague.
  • Labor disputes in Greece have suspended the start of the A1 season, Greece's premier league, thereby keeping Louis Dale (Cornell '10) and his KAOD Dramas team on the sidelines.
  • The Halcones Rojos of Mexico's LNBP are 8-2 and in 3rd place in the 16 team league.  Jeff Aubry (Cornell '99) is averaging 6.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
