News and Notes: Friday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Friday...
  • BC Interruption writes, "Over the last week, while the ACC was participating in the various bowl games with conference tie-ins, here is the list of programs ACC hoops programs has faced: Alabama, Albany, Appalachian State, Auburn, Cornell, Delaware State, East Tennessee State, Elon, Fordham, Harvard, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Monmouth, Oklahoma State, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Samford, Temple, Towson, Western Carolina, Western Michigan and Yale. Certainly not a murderer's row of hoops programs and a ton of largely uninteresting matchups."
  • Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) finished with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in the NBA D-League last night as his Springfield Armor defeated the Erie Baykawks 113-111 in overtime. Springfield and Erie meet again on Saturday. In recapping the game, the Erie Times News notes, "Erie tried to use Foote, a 7-footer out of Cornell, as a practice player in its training camp, but teams couldn't use practice players in that situation. Erie coach Jay Larranaga was an assistant at Cornell before becoming Erie's coach in 2010-11."

Above, Jeff Foote sits down with NBA TV and John Chandler and talks about his time with the Portland Trailblazers training camp and what he took from it.

  • On committed Cornell recruit, Nolan Cressler (Plum HS) Plum, PA, 6-4, G (class of 2012), the Pittsburgh Post Gazette staff blog writes, "A senior player who has really impressed me this season is Plum's [Nolan] Cressler. Two years ago as a thin sophomore, he was pretty much an outside shooter and that's it. Now, the 6-3 senior guard does everything on the court and ... I would love to see his shooting statistics for the season. He doesn't miss much. I've seen Cressler once and will see him again tomorrow when Plum plays at Woodland Hills in a big game. Cressler has signed with Cornell of the Ivy League. Wasn't Cornell in the Sweet 16 two years ago? I think he'll do well there." On Cressler's game tonight, the Gazette writes, "Plum at Woodland Hills, today, 7:30 p.m. -- The Mustangs' Nolan Cressler can really play the game. But so can the Wolverines, and they are at home in this intriguing Section 2-AAAA contest. Winner: Woodland Hills."
  • The Kelowna Capital News recaps the winter holiday action of the Kelowna Secondary School Owls of Canada and committed Cornell recruit, Braxston Bunce (Kelowna Secondary School) Kelowna, BC, Canada, 6-11. The Capital News writes, "With two of the season's premier tournaments next on the agenda, the Kelowna Owls' No. 1 ranking in B.C. high school AAA boys basketball will be put to the test. This weekend, the Owls will be at Terry Fox Secondary for the Legal Beagle, then will travel to Abbotsford Jan. 12 to 14 for the Snowball Classic. Both tourneys will feature several of the province's elite teams, with the Owls firmly perched atop the rankings as the primary target... After losing their first two games of the season—with Mitch Goodwin and Buzz Truss both out of the lineup due to the provincial volleyball championship—the Owls have looked every bit like B.C.'s No. 1 team over the last four weeks. The Owls have since reeled off nine straight victories, including two last weekend in Olympia, Wash., where they captured the Holidays Capital Classic. In the opener, Mitch Goodwin had 19 points in a 67-54 win over the Bremerton Knights. Buzz Truss added 12, while Braxston Bunce chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. In the final, Goodwin nailed 27 points and Bunce had 17 points and 13 boards in 63-58 win over the host Capital Cougars... Two of B.C.'s premier players continue to set the standard for KSS—Goodwin, who is arguably, the province's best point guard, and the 6-foot-11 Bunce, B.C.'s most imposing player at any position and top recruit of Cornell University. Still, Parmar would prefer a little more production from other sources as the stakes get higher for the Owls over the next six weeks. 'Mitch and Braxston have really taken control of the team, when the games get tough those guys step up. In the final, they scored 44 of our 63 points, so you can see what they mean this team. Those guys are automatic.'"

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 6 is No. 242 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 185 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 224. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
