News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...
  • The Yale Daily News writes, "Experts may not be picking an Ivy League team to win the national title in March, but Ancient Eight basketball has garnered its fair share of national attention recently. Not considered a powerhouse basketball conference, the Ivy League has had a growing trend of success in the past few years. In 2010, Cornell made a splash at the NCAA Tournament. The Big Red reached the Sweet 16 and ended the season ranked No. 17 in the country."

  • Above, WENY-ABC News (Elmira, NY) and WBNG-CBS News (Binghamton, NY) check in with Cornell as it prepares for Ivy play and Jeff Foote's ('10) progress in making a push for the NBA. Foote and his Springfield Armor of the NBA D-League play their second game in the D-League Showcase on Thursday in Reno, Nevada against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Fans can watch the game online via the D-League website. WENY writes, "The Cornell men's basketball team gets set to kick of the first of fourteen IVY League Conference games on Friday. The Big Red will host last year's NCAA IVY team, the Princeton Tigers. Plus, Van-Etten native Jeff Foote continues to improve in the NBA Developmental League." WBNG writes:

SVE and Cornell Grad Playing Big In Pro League

His story was straight out of a Disney movie.
Unrecruited by division 3 schools, he ended up at Cornell because his mom ran into coaches in the hospital.
Well Jeff Foote has gone from Spencer-Van Etten to pro ball in Europe and now back state side.
We catch up with the big man in this week's action sports spotlight.

" I knew coming out of high school I was a late bloomer"

Not many could have predicted this skinny kid from Lockport, New York would become a dominating professional basketball player, especially watching a gangly 6-foot-4 sophomore play for Spencer-Van Etten high school

" Between 10th and 11th grade I grew 6 inches, so I knew strength and speed and everything was going to come later. As far as not being recruited by D-3 schools, I got a great opportunity at St. Bonaventure and found a mentor in coach Jason G and then once I transferred to Cornell it all fell into place."

It came together for Foote as a player and the Big Red as a team.
That's his greatest memory from his college days.
A historic run to the sweet 16 captivated the nation, and galvanized his campus.

" We come into the gym, which normally in spring break is empty, and there are media trucks, there's ESPN trucks. Then we come up to our gym and it's just flooded, they have a whole section blocked off for the media and then once the students came back you couldn't go anywhere without somebody talking about it. At that time for Cornell it was a great uplift for the campus."

Once his college career was complete, Foote began the life of a basketball nomad.

He signed with one of the top pro teams in Israel, who then transferred him to Spain. He then signed on with a team in Poland before coming back to America to play in the NBA Developmental league in Springfield Massachusetts.

" It's just a different level at the next level. Things that work at college or the D-league, you have to adjust a little because the guys are bigger and stronger and faster. You have to learn how to play at that next level, and it was a good chance for me to see what that is."

He's joined the Armor late, but is already the top rebounder on the team and one of their top scoring options.

He calls himself a late bloomer, so there's still time for another move for Jeff for any NBA team in need of a 7-footer with an Ivy League degree.

Above, under the watchful eye of Jeff Foote, Reno, Nevada's Shaw Middle School students take part in an exercise at the school Tuesday Jan. 10, 2012.

  • Committed Cornell recruit, Nolan Cressler scored 16 points last night in a win over Penn Hills per the Pittsburgh Tribune. On Cressler and his Plum team, CBS Pittsburgh writes, "Last Friday Plum lost an opportunity to seize first place in AAAA-Sec. 2 from Woodland Hills, the team that edged the Mustangs for the section’s final playoff berth last year, in a 64-58 overtime setback. However, the Mustangs (3-1, 8-3) aren’t going away. Their top gun, Cornell recruit Nolan Cressler, who had 27 in defeat against Woody High, racked up 16 points for Plum on Tuesday in a 59-43 win over Penn Hills. The Mustangs remain just a half-game behind the Wolverines." Below, highlights from January 6 of Holt Harmon and his Plano West team.

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of January 11 is No. 238 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 183 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 221. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
