GAME NOTES: Ivy League action gets underway tonight, and one of the two bouts on the docket feature a matchup between Princeton and Cornell in Ithaca, New York.
Princeton has been hot of late, winning five of its last six, including a 79-68 triumph over the College of New Jersey last Sunday. The Tigers, who are 9-7 overall, have only played five home games this season and are in the midst of playing 12-of-13 on the road
After hanging tough through the beginning part of its schedule, Cornell went on a five-game losing streak. The Big Red stopped the slide against Albright last Saturday however, winning 78-60, and the team currently has a record of 5-9.
This game marks the 215th time these two rivals have met, with Princeton holding to a 136-78 advantage. The Tigers swept the series last season, which included a convincing 84-66 win on February 25, 2011.
Princeton has one of the Ivy's best players in Ian Hummer, who ranks third in the league in scoring with 17.9 ppg and is tied for second in rebounding with 7.9 rpg. Hummer continued his stellar run against the College of New Jersey last weekend with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Douglas Davis provides a strong outside presence, dropping in 13.8 ppg and he is second in the league in three-pointers made with 48. Besides Hummer and Davis however, the Tigers do not have much offense to speak of, netting just 64.3 ppg -- third worst in the league.
Cornell is led by guard Drew Ferry, who is averaging 13.8 ppg to rank seventh in the conference. Ferry is one of the nation's most deadly shooters from beyond the arc, knocking down an Ivy-leading 3.8 three-pointers per contest. Ferry continued his barrage from downtown in last week's win over Albright, draining four triples en route to a game-high 16 points. Chris Wroblewski adds 9.4 ppg but is abysmal shooting the ball at just 30.4 percent. Wroblewski does offset his shooting woes by dishing out 5.6 apg, third in the Ivy League. Though no other player averages double figures in scoring, the Big Red is still have the league's second-most potent offense, scoring 67.4 ppg.
These teams are streaking in opposite directions right now, and while Cornell has played well at home, Princeton's momentum will carry it through to the victory.
