  • Previewing the upcoming WPIAL playoffs in western Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Post Tribune writes of the head to head match up of the region's two leading scorers, including Cornell recruit, Nolan Cressler:

When it comes to their local basketball legacies, Highlands' Micah Mason and Plum's Nolan Cressler belong on an Alle-Kiski Valley greatest hits album. The star guards — and top two scorers in the WPIAL — have undoubtedly cemented their places among the area's best. But some of the all-time greats left their marks in the playoffs, on the WPIAL's biggest and brightest stage. Both Mason and Cressler have had outstanding senior seasons. Both broke their school's scoring records and have numerous individual accolades. Both are headed to Division I colleges — Mason to Drake and Cressler to Cornell. But both would prefer playoff success over regular-season accolades. "I have thought about that more than I can explain," Cressler said. "Good players are remembered, yes, but a lot of it is based on what they did or didn't do in the postseason. Some of the best to come out of this area haven't done it in the playoffs." ...Cressler, who is averaging 25.4 points, has played in just three playoff games, including two last season. He had 29 points in a 53-51 preliminary-round win over Latrobe, and 23 in a 70-45 loss to Shaler in the first round. But this could be the year the experienced Mustangs break through. Led by Cressler, Plum has soared into the Class AAAA playoffs on a four-game winning streak, which includes victories over two of the top-ranked teams in the WPIAL — Woodland Hills and defending champion Gateway. Plum could get another shot at top-seeded Shaler (20-2) should the Mustangs get past Kiski Area.

Though the defeat [to Princeton] will hurt its potential NCAA seed, Harvard is still in good shape for the league championship. With a one-game lead and four of its last six at home (where it hasn’t lost in its last 25 games)—and the other two contests at beatable Cornell and Columbia—the Crimson is still the favorite to win its first outright Ivy title ever. But for a team with larger aspirations—a squad that is talented enough to win games in the NCAA tournament—there is still a lot that needs to be improved...

CORNELL (10-12, 5-3) AT PENN (13-11, 5-2)-Zack Rosen versus Chris Wroblewski. The battle of the senior, redheaded, Jewish ballers. It’s going down like a dreidel after too many spins, an overly-dense matzo ball, or some Manischewitz after a long, hard day. Because after Lin (okay, I mentioned him again) proved this month that Ivy-educated Asian-Americans can indeed play, it’s up to these two to do the same for the Ancient Eight’s Jews. The nation will be watching. Don’t let us down, gentlemen. You’re our best hope.Pick: Penn 75, Cornell 67

...

CORNELL AT PRINCETON-There have been a lot of great players to come out of these two programs recently, and many of them have found success playing ball elsewhere. Because while not all Ivy Leaguers are lucky enough to be the talk of the country and the biggest story of the NBA season (you don’t know that’s who I’m referring to!) it is certainly possible to continue one’s playing career around the world. For example, Kareem Maddox is playing in Holland. Dan Mavraides is playing in Greece. Louis Dale is playing in Germany. Jeff Foote is playing in the NBADL. Ryan Wittman is playing in Poland. What’s that? Wittman’s still at Morgan Stanley? Well, never mind then. Pick: Princeton 65, Cornell 61

  • The Yale Daily News refers to the roadtrip to Cornell as an "odyssey" and quoted Yale head coach James Jones as saying in reference to the Harvard-Dartmouth roadtrip, "It’s not as bad as the Cornell road trip...Back-to-back road trips are tough. That’s the nature of the beast [playing in the Ivy League].”
  • In discussing Harvard [before the Crimson lost to Princeton last Saturday], CBS Sports wrote that the Crimson are incomplete and that "This isn’t [the] Cornell from a few years ago. It doesn’t have the size or consistent deep threats that team embodied."
  • Also on Harvard, the Boston Globe writes, "The best-case scenario for [Tommy] Amaker is that the final weekend of games - at Columbia and Cornell - will not mean anything in terms of the NCAA bid."
  • Steve Donahue told the Philadelphia Inquirer on the recruitment of Jeremy Lin, "Who could have envisioned this?... If someone wrote a movie and put this kid in it, nobody would ever believe it... We were interested, but that's not to say I thought he was going to be incredible. He was a good student and had some skills and looked like he had a good upside."
  • The NY Daily News writes of Lin's continuing explosion on the NBA scene, "Jeremy Lin never seemed to have it this easy when the opposition was Cornell and Princeton."
  • Yahoo writes that Lin had to overcome adversity in reaching the NBA because "He played basketball at an Ivy League school not named Cornell or Princeton."
  • CNNSI.com discusses the comparison between Lin and Tim Tebow and writes, "Tebow also won something called the Heisman Trophy. Perhaps you've heard of it. As a senior at Harvard, Lin lost the Ivy League Player of the Year award to Ryan Wittman of Cornell."
  • The Yale Daily News writes, "Lin’s Harvard education has raised the already burgeoning profile of Ivy League basketball. In tandem with Cornell’s run to the Sweet 16 in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and Harvard’s standing in the national rankings this season, Lin’s success has legitimized Ancient Eight basketball."

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 17 is No. 176 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 183 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 189 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
