GAME NOTES: The Cornell Big Red will attempt once again to win their first road game of the year as they head to Leede Arena to face the Dartmouth Big Green in an Ivy League matchup.
This will be the 203rd meeting in the storied rivalry. The Big Green hold a narrow 102-100 edge in the all-time series coming into tonight. Dartmouth is 14-10 versus the Big Red in Leede Arena. The most recent encounter came in Ithica last year with Cornell connecting on 16 three-pointers in a 96-76 defeat of Dartmouth.
Cornell will try to bounce back tonight from its Friday night 71-60 loss to the conference leading Harvard Crimson. The defeat made the Big Red 7-12 overall and 2-3 in league action. Cornell was held under 40 percent shooting for the fourth time in five games and fell behind by as many as 22 on Friday night. Do not expect the Big Red to be shy from long range and they are ranked second in the Ivy League with 7.5 makes from beyond the arc per outing.
The Big Red's leading scorer Drew Ferry (11.9 ppg) will look to bounce back after being contained by Harvard on Friday. Ferry went 2-of-10 from the field including 2-of-9 from three-point range in the defeat. Chris Wroblewski and Shonn Miller both chipped in nine points in the losing effort. Wroblewski dished out only three assists, but still carries an average of 5.3 apg. Miller, the team's top rebounder, pulled down eight boards. Cornell's leading scorer on Friday was a bit of a surprise as Johnathan Gray posted a team-high 14 points. Gray is now tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 6.5 ppg.
Dartmouth enters tonight's bout with a 4-17 overall record and a 0-5 mark in conference play after it fell 64-62 to Columbia on Friday. The Big Green have now lost four in a row. Dartmouth led the Lions with 3:28 left to play on Friday night, but could not hang on for the victory as Columbia's Mark Cisco hit a game-winning shot with seconds left to play. The Big Green have been very unimpressive in league action so far, as they have averaged a league-low 51.6 points per contest. On the defensive end, Dartmouth has allowed its opponents to net 61.8 ppg.
There are no superstars offensively for the Big Green. Gabas Maldunas is the team's top scorer (8.8) and rebounder (7.1). R.J. Griffin is second in scoring with an average of 8.5 points per game. Jvonte Brooks, Jabari Trotter, and David Rufful are all solid contributors with scoring averages above seven ppg. Much like Cornell, Dartmouth's leading scorers on Friday were not typical as Tyler Melville led the team with 14 points and John Golden netted a second- best nine points. Melville is the seventh leading scorer for the year for Dartmouth (4.4 ppg), and Golden is just ahead of him with an average of 6.7 ppg.
Something has got to give in this one as Cornell seeks its first road victory and Dartmouth looks for its first Ivy League win. Both these teams played Columbia evenly, as Cornell went 1-1 against the Lions and the Big Green lost on a buzzer beater last night. Their similar performances against a common opponent indicates this will be a close one. Cornell has a more polished team as it leads the Ivy League in turnover margin.
