Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his third season at Cornell (27-42, .391; 13-15 Ivy, .464) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
STORY LINES: The Cornell men's basketball team will look to have a little early New Year's celebration when it visits Binghamton on Sunday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. The Big Red will be out to end the 2012 portion of its schedule with consecutive road wins while building some momentum heading into January's opening of Ivy League play. The game will be televised throughout New York on Time Warner Cable Sports.
Cornell brings a 5-8 record into the contest after a 79-67 win at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday evening to snap a three-game skid that included losses at No. 1 Duke and 2012 NCAA tournament squad Vanderbilt, as well as America East contender Boston University. Despite flashes of good basketball in all three of its losses, the Big Red finally put an extended stretch of good basketball against the Red Flash. Cornell assisted on 19 baskets, limited Saint Francis (Pa.) to 41 percent shooting while turning them over 19 times, and was able to use it pressure defense to speed up the game.
The Big Red has been solid on the defensive end all season, but Cornell has been most dangerous when it has gotten itself easy shots from the defense. In Cornell's five wins it has scored 77.0 points per game on 48 percent shooting. In its losses - 54.6 points on 35 percent shooting. It also has a positive assist-turnover ratio and has limited opponents to 39 percent shooting. That has always been the case with head coach Bill Courtney's teams at Cornell. The defense has been a constant - and when the offense is clicking, Cornell is tough to beat. It is now 19-2 when scoring 70 or more points under his tenure.
Cornell has been tremendously balanced on the offensive end, with no player averaging in double figures, yet six players score more than seven points per game. Leading the way is sophomore Shonn Miller, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Miller leads the Big Red in scoring (9.8 ppg.) and ranks second in the league in rebounding (8.0 rpg.) and blocks (1.7 bpg.) and is fourth in steals (1.8 spg.). Senior Errick Peck has picked up the pace and is second on the team in scoring (8.2 ppg.) and rebounding (4.8 rpg.), upping those numbers to 16.5 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. in his last two. Sophomore Devin Cherry (7.8 ppg.), seniors Eitan Chemerinski (7.8 ppg.) and Johnathan Gray (7.6 ppg.) and freshman Nolan Cressler (7.2 ppg.) aren't far behind in the Big Red's 10-man rotation. Stalwart senior defender Miles Asafo-Adjei leads the team in assists (2.9), while sophomore Galal Cancer has flashed a strong all-court game (5.3 ppg., 2.8 rpg., 2.5 apg.).
A WIN OVER BINGHAMTON WOULD:
• make the Big Red to 6-8 on the season.
• extend Cornell's lead in the all-time series with the Bearcats to 6-2.
• make Cornell 20-23 all-time against America East squads and even Bill Courtney's record against the conference at 6-6.
• be the 1,202nd in program history (1,201-1,316 in 114 seasons).
ABOUT BINGHAMTON:
The Bearcats dropped their sixth straight game on Friday evening at Colgate (74-47) to fall to 2-10 on the year. Despite the loss, freshman Jordan Reed continued to be the story for Binghamton with 10 points and 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year. The rookie is now among the national freshman leaders in scoring (16.7 ppg.) and rebounding (9.9 rpg.) as the team's lone double figure scorer. Both Jimmy Gray (9.8 ppg., 4.2 apg., 3.6 rpg., 1.5 spg.) and Roland Brown (8.4 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) are nearing double figures as well. Binghamton has struggled offensively, scoring just 57.6 points on .379 shooting overall, including .283 from beyond the 3-point arc. First-year head coach Tommy Dempsey inherits four starters and nine letter winners from last season's 2-29 squad.
