News and Notes: Saturday Edition

Below, news and notes for Saturday...
  • Harvard alum and booster, Mike James, blogs for Rush The Court and checks in on the Ivy League.
  • In alumni news, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) and his Zalgiris team of Lithuania defeated Emporio Armani in Milan, Italy on Friday in the EuroLeague, 69-61.  Foote finished with 2 points and 2 rebounds in 9 minutes of action and was 0/3 from the floor.  Zalgiris is 7-2 in the EuroLeague and ranked No. 6 in Europe.  Louis Dale (Cornell '10) is in action on Saturday in the Greek A1 league with his KAOD team when they face Peristeri GS.  Also on Saturday, Jeff Aubry (Cornell '99) and his Halcones Rojos of the Mexican LNBP face Gigantes.
  • In its Duke-Temple preview, CBS Sports writes, "While Temple plays three top 10 opponents in its next eight games, the Blue Devils (8-0) don't face a ranked team in their next seven. Their only three remaining games in December are at home against lesser competition - Cornell, Elon and Santa Clara."
  • South Dakota struggles to find home games reports The Star Press of Muncie, Indiana.  “'We search for anyone who’s willing to go home-and-home with us,' South Dakota coach Dave Boots said. 'A lot of people were only willing to do a two-for-one. We shied away from doing that and held off, and there’s only been a few teams — Morehead State, Cornell, Canisius, Ball State now, Loyola Marymount — that have agreed to play home-and-home with us. We get it usually one season to the next, but if we can get them to do us in the same year, it helps us filling out our schedule, which is very difficult to do.'”
  • The Province of Vancouver notes that Kelowna Secondary School is ready to move forward without its graduated stars and writes, "Both post Braxston Bunce and point guard Mitch Goodwin, the team’s top two players from 2011-12, have moved on to university careers. But a huge part of the team is back, and against a talented but young St. George’s team on Thursday, that experience shone through.  The guard triumvirate of Katerberg, Malcolm Hlady and Joel Burma were all a big part of the rotation last season, and having won the Telus Invite last season, and having performed in so many high pressure games, they had just enough to carry them to a win.  With frontcourt returnees Buzz Truss (19 points) and Darrion Bunce (13 points) also seeing huge minutes last year, the Owls are among the province’s more experienced units. 'They’ve experienced every type of game, from blowouts to really close ones,' said Owls’ head coach Harry Parmar. 'Those five kids played between 15 and 35 minutes-a-game last season. They have played in big games. Last year they deferred a bit to Mitch and Braxston, but now it’s their turn.'"

    • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or        not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team                  winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents'              opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 8 is No. 204 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 234 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 231 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
