News and Notes: Monday Edition

Below, news and notes for Monday...

  • Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) was given the starting nod on Sunday and played 25 minutes for his Zalgiris  (Lithuania) club as they crushed Tsmoki-Minsk (Belarus), 81-57 in Eastern European VTB League action.  Foote finished with 4 points (1/2 FGs), 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block in the win, including the above throw-down dunk.  Zalgirs is currently the No. 6 ranked team in Europe.
  • RantSports writes of Cornell's December 19 game in Durham, Carolina, "Well, Duke can finally rest at ease because the Cornell Big Red are not the Buckeyes. Not even by a long shot. However, Duke should obviously not take its next few opponents lightly because upsets happen in college basketball all of the time."
  • Below  is a list of players who were on Ivy League rosters, but left their respective programs since the 2008-2009 season due to reasons other than graduation and/or exhaustion of NCAA eligibility. This list could be considered as one indicator of Ivy League players' satisfaction with their respective programs or evidence of coaching staffs that force out and cut players from the program.

  • Cornell RPI WatchThe RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or        not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team                    winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents'              opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 10 is No. 227 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 238 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 235 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
