Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his fourth season at Cornell (35-62, .361; 18-24 Ivy, .429) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
STORY LINES:
After a two week break for final exams, the Cornell men's basketball team will hit the reset button when it visits two-time defending America East regular season champion Stony Brook on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 6 p.m. at Pritchard Gymnasium in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Big Red will be attempting to end a 16-game winless streak dating back to last year and pick up its first win of the 2013-14 campaign.
Cornell has played some good basketball despite its 0-10 start, with two of the losses coming to 2013 NCAA Final Four squads (Syracuse, Louisville) and six total coming at the hands of 2013 postseason squads (Syracuse, Louisville and Notre Dame - NCAA, Stony Brook - NIT, Loyola - CIT, Western Michigan - CBI) that went a combined 161-58. Cornell has shown glimpses of really good play despite its heavy reliance on underclassmen and inexperienced upperclassmen. Three of the team's top six scorers are freshmen or sophomores and the three top upperclassmen had made a combined 23 career starts entering the year. The Big Red led No. 8/7 Syracuse by 14 points in the first half and by six at the break, led a Loyola (MD) team that won 23 games a year ago by seven points with five minutes remaining and had a 19-point advantage against Binghamton with 13 minutes left and a 10-point lead with four minutes to play against Siena and led Western Michigan in the second half. Cornell went on to drop all five games.
Sophomore guard Nolan Cressler is off to a great start for the Big Red, averaging 17.1 points and 4.9 rebounds. Sophomore guard Robert Hatter is also averaging double figures (12.7 ppg.) while chipping in 3.1 assists and 2.7 rebounds. Senior forward Dwight Tarwater has been a double-double threat, posting 8.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per night and pacing the team and ranking among the Ivy League leaders in offensive rebounds (2.8 per game). Junior guard Devin Cherry rounds out a foursome of players scoring at least 8.0 points per game (9.3 ppg., 3.4 rpg. and 3.3 apg.). Freshman Robert Onuorah (3.4 ppg., 3.4 rpg., 0.8 bpg.) and junior Deion Giddens (4.5 ppg., 3.5 rpg., 0.9 bpg.) are holding down the middle, while senior guard Dominick Scelfo is providing firepower off the bench (3.8 ppg., 1.2 apg.). The Big Red is scoring 68.0 points on 42 percent shooting and has a positive assist:turnover ratio. Much of Cornell's troubles have come on the defensive end, where the team is allowing 85.7 points on 51 percent shooting, including 43 percent from 3-point range.
Stony Brook is off to another great start after winning three of the last four America East regular season championships. Head coach Steve Pikiell has the Seawolves ranked among the top mid-majors in the country and will be led by sophomore center Jameel Warney (15.7 ppg., 9.7 rpg.) and a trio of guards averaging double figures. A powerful offensive squad, Stony Brook is already 1-0 in conference play after picking up a win at New Hampshire on Dec. 15.
A WIN OVER STONY BROOK WOULD:
• avoid the Big Red's first 0-11 start to a season in program history (also 0-10 in 1904-05).
• snap a 16-game losing streak dating back to last season, the tied for the longest in school history.
• end a seven-game road skid.
• improve Cornell's lead in the all-time series against Stony Brook to 5-3.
• make the Big Red 20-22 all-time against members of the America East Conference.
• be the 1,210th in program history (1,209-1,336 in 114 seasons).
ABOUT STONY BROOK:
• Stony Brook brings a 7-4 overall record into a Thursday evening contest at Loyola (MD).
• Sophomore big man Jameel Warney is averaging a near double-double with 15.7 ppg. and 9.7 rpg. while adding 2.0 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. He is connecting on 64 percent of his shots.
• The guard trio of senior Anthony Jackson (15.5 ppg.), sophomore Carson Puriefoy (12.4 ppg.) and senior Dave Coley (10.1 ppg.) are also averaging double figures.
• Stony Brook is scoring 76.2 ppg. as a team while shooting 46 percent from the floor and 39 percent from beyond the arc.
• The Seawolves have won consecutive America East regular season championships and three of the last four, but are hoping to burst through for their first NCAA tournament appearance this season. They return four starters, though gone is reigning America East Player of the Year Tommy Brenton.
• Head coach Steve Pikiell is in his ninth season directing the Stony Brook program and has a 127-130 record.
• The Seawolves are 4-1 at home, including a win over Northeastern.
THE CORNELL-STONY BROOK SERIES:
• Cornell leads 4-3 in a series that began during the 1999-2000 season.
• The Big Red is 1-2 all-time at Stony Brook.
• The Sea Wolves have won consecutive meetings after last year's 76-53 victory in Ithaca.
CORNELL VS. AMERICA EAST:

LAST TIME VS. THE SEAWOLVES:
• Stony Brook went on a 14-0 run midway through the first half and cruised to a 76-53 win over Cornell at Newman Arena on Nov. 28, 2012.
• Freshman Jameel Warney posted 19 points and 11 rebounds in just 20 minutes, hitting 7-of-8 field goals and grabbing a game-high five offensive rebounds as the visitors dominated the glass (38-20).
• Stony Brook shot a season-high .586 (29-of-54) from the floor and outscored the Big Red 32-8 in the paint.
• Anthony Jackson added a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers.
• Big Red senior Johnathan Gray scored a season-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting (5-of-6 from 3-point range), while classmate Eitan Chemerinski added 11 points.
• Cornell made just 35 percent of its shots in the loss and turned the ball over 17 times.
NEXT UP:
• Cornell will close out the calendar year when it vists Saint Peter's on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. in Jersey City, N.J.
• The Big Red and the Peacocks will be meeting for the second time in program history, as Saint Peter's took the first meeting last year in Ithaca, 68-64.
