News and Notes: Friday Edition

Below, news and notes for Friday...

[Steve] Donahue [before taking over at Boston College] took a Cornell team to the Sweet 16 with similar players, but that was a two week surge. Had that Cornell team been asked to compete at the ACC level, they may have very well been an NCAA bubble team.  Right now, BC is not even that. If there are concerned looks in the men’s basketball office at The Heights, it is with justification.BC is simply not good enough, not big enough, not tough enough to succeed in the ACC.I watched a few earlier BC games–against Providence and against UMass-both losses–and I thought they were close to solving the problems of a year ago which cost them games down the stretch.I might have been wrong. Maybe the answer is simple. They simply aren’t good enough to win at the level of competition they are facing. It isn’t a big gap, but it is enough to prevent the Eagles from moving to the next plateau.Donahue has had enough time to get it right. He is good coach and a better man, but unless there is a turnaround–a dramatic turnaround–and the Eagles can find their own self confidence and then find a way to survive against the sharks that will arrive as soon as conference season gets into a full cycle in January, BC athletic director Brad Bates–who did not hire Donahue–has every right to question if the program needs to be jolted again with a change in leadership, if not direction."
  • Purdue is struggling with its free throw shooting and the Indianapolis Star writes, "Senior forward Errick Peck, a 70-percent free throw shooter in his career at Cornell and Purdue, says concentration is key."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or        not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team     winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 13, 2013 is No. 338 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 339 in the nation, while the Sagarin Rankings (USA Today) have Cornell at No. 344. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
