HEAD COACH BILL COURTNEY
Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his fifth season at Cornell (38-79, .325; 19-37 Ivy, .339) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
STORY LINES:
After a productive first weekend, the Cornell men's basketball team will continue its early season sprint with the home opener against Central New York rival Colgate on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y. The game will be broadcast live on the Ivy League Digital Network, while Barry Leonard and Eric Taylor '05 will call the game on 98.7 FM The Buzzer.

Cornell pulled one of the biggest upsets of the opening weekend of college basketball season with its 68-60 triumph over George Mason in the season opener before dropping a tight 76-71 contest at Loyola (MD). Cornell has already matched its win total against Division I teams from a season ago when it went 2-26 overall. The Big Red has the looks of a team on the rebound, playing suffocating defense (.339 field goal percentage defense, .326 3-point percentage defense, 68.0 ppg. allowed, 6.0 blocked shots per game) in both contests.

The biggest difference from last year is the return of first-team All-Ivy selection Shonn Miller, who missed the 2013-14 season with a shoulder injury. The 6-7 forward returned with a bang, recording 21 points and 13 rebounds in the upset of George Mason and collecting 20 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals at Loyola (MD). His averages of 20.5 ppg., 11.0 rpg. and 2.0 bpg. earned him the Ivy League's initial Player of the Week award.

Other big differences include the return of senior Galal Cancer (13.0 ppg., 3.0 rpg.) after a year away from basketball, the move of senior Devin Cherry to point guard (8.0 ppg., 7.0 rpg., 5.5 apg.) and the maturation of sophomores Robert Hatter (19.0 ppg., 4.5 rpg.) and David Onuorah (4.5 ppg., 6.5 rpg., 2.0 bpg.). Sophomore guard Darryl Smith (3.0 ppg., 1.5 rpg.) has also provided key minutes in the backcourt, while senior Deion Giddens (1.5 rpg., 1.0 bpg.) and freshman swingman Wil Bathurst (1.5 ppg., 1.5 rpg.) have also played important minutes. In all, head coach Bill Courtney has used a 12-man rotation in each of the first two games, though only six players are averaging double figure minutes.

The home opener features a familiar foe — Central New York rival Colgate. It will be the 126th all-time meeting between the programs located just 70 miles apart. The Raiders, coming off a 13-18 season under fourth-year head coach Matt Langel, return six of their top seven scorers from a season ago, though lost is the man who topped the charts, Murphy Burnatowski (14.2 ppg.). Three double figure scorers from a season ago — Austin Tillotson (13.3 ppg, 4.4 apg.), Ethan Jacobs (11.5 ppg.) and Damon Sherman-Newsome (11.3 ppg.) — are back for Colgate, which was picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League's preseason poll. Colgate brings an 0-1 record into the contest after a 57-52 loss at La Salle on Nov. 15.

ABOUT COLGATE:
• The Raiders bring an 0-1 record into the contest after a 57-52 defeat at the hands of La Salle.
• Four players reached double figures in scoring with Ethan Jacobs leading the way with a game-high 12 points.
• Colgate went 13-18 (6-12 Patriot) a season ago despite a hot finish, winning four of their final five contests with the only loss a nine-point defeat at eventual conference champ American in the conference tournament.
• Colgate returns four starters and 14 letter winners from last season's squad, including six of the team's top seven scorers.
• A veteran team, Colgate returns three senior starters and another entering his junior campaign.
• Double figure scorers Austin Tillotson (13.3 ppg, 4.4 apg.), Jacobs (11.5 ppg.) and Damon Sherman-Newsome (11.3 ppg.) will have plenty of opportunities to pick up the slack with the loss of leading scorer Murphy Burnatowski (14.2 ppg.) to graduation.
• Fourth-year head coach Matt Langel brings a career record of 32-62 into the contest, but has improved Colgate's win total overall and in Patriot League play each season in his tenure.

THE CORNELL-COLGATE SERIES:
• The Big Red leads the all-time series 71-54 dating back to the first meeting in the 1901-02 campaign.
• Cornell won 16 straight contests between 1961-69 and 11 more in a row from 1981-91.
• The Raiders have had the best of the recent series, winning six of the last nine meetings.
• A year ago, Colgate earned an 81-53 victory over the Big Red a year ago in Hamilton, N.Y. despite 12 points from Devin Cherry and 10 from Deion Gidddens.

CORNELL VS. PATRIOT LEAGUE:
• Cornell is 142-121 all-time against current members of the Patriot League, including 71-54 against Colgate.
• The Big Red has also played American (1-1), Army (20-13), Boston University (2-2), Bucknell (23-25), Holy Cross (2-3), Lafayette (7-11), Lehigh (13-9), Loyola (MD) (1-2) and Navy (2-1).
• This is the second of two scheduled contests with Patriot League opponents this season. Cornell dropped a 76-71 contest at Loyola (MD) on Sunday, Nov. 16.

A WIN OVER COLGATE WOULD:
• improve Cornell's record to 2-1 on the season, matching last season's win total and doubling its win total against Division I teams.
• snap a five-game home losing skid overall.
• avenge last season's 23-point loss in Hamilton, N.Y., and extend the Big Red's lead in the all-time series to 72-54.
• be the 1,213th in program history (1,212-1,353 in 116 seasons, .473).

LAST TIME VS. COLGATE:
Nolan Cressler scored a game-high 19 points to pace three double figure scorers, but Colgate opened the second half on a 9-0 run and never looked back in an 81-58 win over Cornell on Nov. 20, 2013 at Cotterell Court.
• Cressler added four rebounds and a steal to his 8-of-18 shooting night and has now reached double figures in the scoring column in nine consecutive games.
Devin Cherry scored 12 points, dished three assists, grabbed two rebounds and collected two steals, while Deion Giddens hit all five of his field goals en route to a career-best 10 points.
• The Big Red shot 41 percent from the floor, but was just 4-of-20 from 3-point range and committed 14 turnovers.
• Murphy Burnatowski scored 19 points to lead Colgate.
• Ethan Jacobs scored 15 and added four rebounds, two assists and two blocks. The big man hit 3-of-4 from 3-point range for the Raiders, who connected on 11-of-23 from beyond the arc as a team.

NOTES TO KNOW:
• The Big Red is limiting opponents to 34 percent shooting over its first two games. In all, Cornell recorded a .495 field goal percentage defense mark in 2013-14 and allowed opponents to shoot 50 percent or better 15 times in 28 games.
• Senior Shonn Miller blocked a pair of shots against George Mason to surpass the 100 career block milestone. He became the fifth player in Cornell history to reach that plateau.
• Twenty one of Miller's 22 rebounds so far this season have come on the defensive glass.
• With 21 points and 13 rebounds against the Patriots, Miller recorded his eighth career double-double.
• Miller is the first Cornell player with consecutive 20-point games since Nolan Cressler scored 29 points at Yale and 22 at Penn last season. The last Big Red player with three straight 20-point efforts was Ryan Wittman in the 2009-10 regular season finale against Yale, followed by NCAA tournament wins over Temple and Wisconsin.
• Senior Devin Cherry nearly secured a triple-double with nine points, 10 rebounds and seven assists against George Mason. No Cornell player has ever registered a triple-double in the program's history over a total of 2,565 games.
• Cherry has 11 of the team's 16 assists on the season (69 percent).
• In his second collegiate appearance since March 2, 2013, senior Galal Cancer matched a career high with 19 points.
• Sophomore Robert Hatter scored 21 points, good enough for his third career 20-point outing.
• Cornell's relentless pressure and speed have helped the Big Red outscore its opponents 78-67 in the second half of games so far.
• With the win over George Mason, Cornell snapped a 17-game road losing strea and a seven-game skid overall.

LAST TIME OUT:
• Cornell rallied from a 14-point deficit to take a second half lead, but Loyola (MD) closed strong for a 76-71 victory on Nov. 16, 2014, at Reitz Arena.
• Senior Shonn Miller had 20 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
• Classmate Galal Cancer matched a career high with 19 points and sophomore Robert Hatter chipped in with 17.
• Sophomore David Onuorah had eight rebounds and four of the team's nine blocked shots on the evening.
• Cornell was outrebounded 43-34 and shot just 16 percent from the 3-point line (3-of-19).
• The Greyhounds, meanwhile, connected on 8-of-19 from 3-point range (42 percent) to create some separation.
• Four players scored in double figures, led by 15 points from Tyler Hubbard.
• Eric Laster scored 13, Franz Rassman chipped in 12 and Andre Walker scored 11 in the win.
• Cam Gregory had a game-high 10 boards.

MILLER NAMED IVY LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Shonn Miller was named Ivy League Men's Basketball Player of the Week when the conference office announced awards following the first weekend of action on Nov. 17.
• It is the seventh weekly honor for Miller in his career (two-time Player of the Week, five-time Rookie of the Week).
• Miller showed exactly what the Big Red had been missing in splitting a season-opening road trip after missing the 2013-14 season.
• Miller averaged 20.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocked shots, 1.0 steals and 1.0 assists in a pair of starts.
• He shot 41 percent from the floor, 46 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
• Miller had a monster contest in the win over George Mason in his first game in nearly a year and a half, scoring 21 points, including connecting on a career-high four 3-pointers, to go along with 13 rebounds and two blocks.
• In a five-point loss to Loyola (Md.), he scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked two shots, stole two passes and dished two assists.

NEXT UP:
• The Big Red heads to the Gildan Charleston Classic for three games beginning with a matchup against South Carolina of the Southeastern Conference on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
• Following the trip to Charleston, the Big Red will play two of its next three contests at home starting with a matchup against Canisius on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. in Newman Arena.
