ITHACA, N.Y. -- For the second game in a row, the Cornell men's basketball made a comeback after digging itself a hole. This time, the Big Red was able to bring home the win, and in doing so made another early statement about where the season could go.

Cornell rallied from a 17-point first half deficit that was still 13 points with 11 minutes to play and stormed back to earn a 58-52 victory over Central New York rival Colgate on Tuesday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red matched its win total from a year ago in improving to 2-1 on the season, while the Raiders slipped to 0-2.

Senior Devin Cherry scored 21 points, dished five assists, grabbed four rebounds and had three steals in a dominant performance as the Big Red's ability to defend and get to the free-throw line allowed the home team to complete a spirited rally in front of an energized Newman Arena. Senior Shonn Miller added seven points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks and both senior Galal Cancer and sophomore JoJo Fallas had eight points. Cornell allowed just 21 second half points and had a 12-4 advantage in points off turnovers, key in a low scoring battle.

Damon Sherman-Newsome had 19 points to lead three double figure scorers for Colgate. Austin Tillotson added 11 and Luke Roh scored 10. The Raiders struggled from the free-throw line (1-of-7) and were held to one offensive rebound as the Big Red dominated the defensive glass against a normally sharp-shooting Colgate squad.

For a significant stretch of the first half, it looked as though Colgate would run away with the win for a second straight season as Cornell struggled offensively. The Raider scored the first eight points of the game before freshman Jordan Abdur-Ra'oof got on the board with his first collegiate points, a layup underneath after a great interior pass from David Onuorah. That didn't quell the Colgate surge as the visitors extended the edge to 15-2 before the Big Red would score again.

3-pointers by Alex Ramon and Sean O'Brien, both hit after nice finds from Tillotson, left Cornell struggling for answers on both sides of the basketball, trailing 23-6 with just 7:33 left in the half.

The home team made a mini-run behind Cherry and Fallas, who scored all of the Big Red's final 16 points of the half to cut the halftime deficit to nine (31-22). Cherry scored 10 during the stretch, while Fallas, who entered the game with six career points, hit a pair of 3-pointers to match that total in one four-minute stretch. In all, the home team hit six of its final eight shots of the half after opening the stanza 2-of-19 in the first 14 minutes of the game.

Unlike Sunday's matinee at Loyola (MD), where the game was lost in the first half, Cornell would hang around until it was in the lead.

Cornell's energy in the second half was apparent right away, but four minutes in the Raiders had actually bumped the lead to 13. Robert Hatter had a steal for the Big Red and Cancer took it and scored on the other end on the team's first defensive and offensive possessions of the second half, but the run started with 11 minutes to play in regulation and the home team trailing by 13.

After Alex Ramon got a layup on a feed from Ethan Jacobs, who was held scoreless on the night, Cancer and Wil Bathurst hit consecutive 3-pointers to nearly cut the deficit in half. Bathurst hit a free throw, followed by two more from Cancer and a Darryl Smith putback and all of a sudden the 11-0 run had Newman Arena rocking.

Tillotson hit a 3-pointer late in the shot clock on Colgate's ensuing possession despite a good Cornell defensive stand, but instead of deflating the Big Red, Cherry answered on the other end by getting into the lane and finishing to make it 46-43.

From there, the Big Red would seize control.

The 11-0 run was extended to 19-3 after consecutive free throws by Miller and Hatter and a steal by Bathurst that led to a run-out by Cherry. All of a sudden, Cornell led 49-46 and Colgate had hit just one field goal in nearly seven minutes.

Damon Sherman-Newsome momentarily got Colgate back within a point on his drive to the buck, but Cherry again bulled his way into the lane and earned two free throws, hitting one. After consecutive Big Red defensive stops, Miller hit a tough pull-up jumper to extend the lead to four with 1:15 left, then Cancer hit a free throw to making it a five-point game. The visitors wouldn't get the ball back within a possession the rest of the way and the Big Red, who opened the game 2-of-10 from the free-throw line, hit 3-of-4 in the final seven seconds to seal the win. After the tough start from the charity stripe, Cornell settled in to hit 12 of its final 18.

Cornell will open play at the 2014 Gildan Charleston Classic on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. when it meets South Carolina at TD Arena.

The Cornell men's basketball team has made an early statement to the Ivy League and anyone else who cares to listen: This is not last year's Big Red.
Coach Bill Courtney's squad rallied from a 13-point deficit with 11 minutes to play to stun regional rival Colgate, 58-52, Tuesday evening in its home opener at Newman Arena. The Big Red (2-1) matched its win total from a year ago, when it finished 2-26; the Raiders slipped to 0-2.
Senior Devin Cherry scored 21 points and added five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Classmate Shonn Miller, who earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors for his performances in Cornell's season-opening weekend split, added seven points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Senior guard Galal Cancer and sophomore guard JoJo Fallas had eight points apiece for Cornell, which outscored Colgate in the second half, 36-21, allowed just 21 second half points and had a 12-4 advantage in points off turnovers, key in a low scoring battle.
Damon Sherman-Newsome had 19 points to lead Colgate, which led by 17 points with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half. Austin Tillotson added 11 and Luke Roh 10. The Raiders made just one of seven free-throw attempts and were held to one offensive rebound.
The Raiders scored the game's first eight points and took their largest lead, 23-6, with 7:33 left in the first half, but Cornell ended the half on a 16-8 run to pull to within nine at the break. Colgate extended its lead back to 13 points at the first media timeout of the second half, but Cornell outscored the visitors, 13-2, over the next eight minutes to pull to within a basket.
Cornell took its first lead of the night, 47-46, when sophomore guard Robert Hatter hit two free throws with 5:17 left. Freshman guard Wil Bathurst then stole the ball and fed Cherry for a layup to extend the lead to three, and the Big Red pulled away for the six-point victory.
The Big Red won despite shooting just 38.8 percent from the floor (19-for-49) and 30 percent from beyond the arc (6-for-20). Cornell outscored Colgate from the free-throw line by 13 points despite making just 14 of 26 attempts.
Cornell heads south this weekend for the Charleston (S.C.) Classic. The Red will take on the University of South Carolina at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, then will meet either Penn State or UNC-Charlotte on Friday evening and an opponent to be determined on Sunday.

Ithaca, N.Y. — Newman Nation was rocking as the Cornell Big Red overcame a slow first half and a 17-point deficit against Colgate with a furious second half rally to pull ahead and ultimately defeat the rival Raiders 58-52 on Tuesday night.
Led by senior guards Devin Cherry, who tallied 21 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals, and Galal Cancer who added 8 points and 4 rebounds, the Big Red (2-1) claimed their second victory of the year, matching their total number of wins from last season.
Colgate was led by Damon Sherman-Newsome who scored 19 points and had 5 rebounds. Austin Tillotson and Luke Roh also scored in double digits for the Raiders with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Cornell started the game ice cold, shooting only 29.6% in the first half, and Colgate used the Big Red’s inability to score to take a 23-6 lead to start the game. With 7:11 left in the first half, and Cornell shooting only 2-17 from the field, it looked bleak for the Big Red; every time the team looked to get back into the game, inconsistent shooting held them back while Colgate was able to put up points consistently and take a large lead. The lack of offensive prowess can be credited to the Raiders who played a solid defensive game, keeping the lanes closed and making sure Cornell couldn’t drive to the basket for the easy put-ins.
With 4:34 remaining in the first, Cornell sophomore guard JoJo Fallas hit a three-point shot to bring the Big Red within thirteen, and following an Ethan Jacobs missed three for Colgate, Cherry drove in for a layup, marking the first time of the night that Cornell had scored in back-to-back possessions. For the rest of the half, Cornell outscored Colgate 10-6, and by the intermission Cornell was within nine, down only 31-22.
The Big Red came out in the second half looking revitalized and ready to score. Led by guard Robert Hatter’s intensity, Cornell looked like a new team for the first few minutes, keeping Colgate’s offense quiet and making a few key shots, but like the Raiders, the Big Red quickly became unable to make baskets. From 14:39 until 10:53 the score remained 41-30 in favor of Colgate as both teams traded turnovers and missed shots in a show of sound defenses.
As late as 9:20 left in the game, Colgate held a thirteen point lead over the offensively struggling Big Red, but a ten-point rally over the next three minutes brought Cornell within three points of the lead with over six minutes left. At 5:17, a pair of Hatter free throws tied the game and then put Cornell ahead, and the Big Red never looked back, leading for the rest of the game. A once-silent crowd at Newman Arena had been awoken, and for the last ten minutes, Cornell suddenly looked dominant over a very good opponent, outscoring Colgate 22-9 to ultimately win by six.
After being named the Ivy League Men’s Basketball player of the week, Shonn Miller followed up a dominant first two games with a quiet third, shooting only 2-9 from the field. Though he did wind up with 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Darryl Smith and Will Bathurst also played key roles in the comeback win. With the victory, Cornell moves to 2-1 on the season, good for first in the Ivy League. They next play on Thursday at 7:30PM against South Carolina in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Damon Sherman-Newsome registered a team-high 19 points but it wasn't enough to spark a Colgate men's basketball victory as they dropped a 58-52 decision to nearby rival Cornell here Tuesday night.

Sherman-Newsome chipped in five boards, while Luke Roh led all scorers with eight rebounds. Roh also added 10 points to go along with junior Austin Tillotson's 11 points, which closed out the Raider scorers in double-figures.

Throughout the game, Colgate led by as many as 17 points when it jumped out to a 23-6 edge to start the game. Sherman-Newsome scored the contest's opening eight points creating the early advantage for the Raiders.

Colgate then held the Big Red to just one layup in the beginning 11 minutes until Shonn Miller hit Cornell's first jumper.

The Big Red closed the deficit down to seven points with a layup from Galal Cancer to open the second half but that would be as close as they would come until midway through the period. Cancer then sparked a 19-3 Cornell rally that saw the Big Red take over the lead for the first time in the contest with a little less than five minutes to play.

Colgate would get to within one at 49-48 with four minutes left but wasn't able to jump-start a rally of its own as it saw Cornell finish 5-of-8 from the free throw line to steal the come-from-behind victory.

The Raiders finished the game hitting 23 of their 51 attempts from the floor for 45 percent shooting on the night. They added 5-of-15 from behind the arc for 33 percent shooting from long. Cornell went 19-for-49 from the floor to go along with its 6-of-20 shooting from the 3-point line.

Colgate is back in action Saturday at Campbell for its first game of the Buckeye Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.

From the Sources
• Colgate head coach Matt Langel: (On the game) "It's really tough to stomach. For this group, they've worked really hard and I feel badly. I didn't prepare them to play a small lineup and we had to do that at times tonight. All that being said we were up 13 points with 11 minutes left in the game, in a lower scoring contest, you're in pretty good position."
"Obviously Cornell cranked up the pressure and we didn't respond very well. A couple times we got to the rim we didn't finish the plays and we missed some critical free throws. Cornell started to drive to the basket and I credit them for stepping up. Although they didn't shoot a great free throw percentage for the game, they made them when it mattered. Shonn Miller, their all-league player, even though he didn't have an all-league night, stepped up and got them a big basket late in the game."

"We just didn't respond as the game started to slip away from us like we needed to. This will be a great lesson for us and we will work like crazy in practice before we head down to North Carolina and then over to Virginia. Hopefully we can learn from this and get better. "

Up Next
• Colgate now shifts its attention to Campbell, which is coming off a 86-51 set back to Davidson on Tuesday.
• This away contest with the Camels will be the first game of the Buckeye Classic and is set to tip-off at 2 p.m.
• This will also be the first matchup between these two teams.
