News and Notes: Saturday Edition

Below, news and notes...

  • Cornell's crushing defeat to Penn State made national headlines on major sports blogs including, NBC Sports Collage Basketball Talk, which writes, "Cornell just had to inbound the ball and take a foul and make some free throws leading by one with 4.8 seconds left to help close out a victory. Instead, the Big Red made an errant inbounds pass that turned into a Penn State game winner as senior guard D.J. Newbill made the go-ahead lay-up as time expired to give the Nittany Lions a win in the Charleston Classic consolation bracket.  Newbill finished with 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting, 4-of-5 from three, six rebounds and four steals against Cornell on Friday night after playing 50 minutes the day before in a loss to Charlotte. With the win, Penn State moved to 3-1 on the season."  SB Nation added, "Cornell went 1-26 against Division I teams last year, but they're off to a good start at 2-2 this year. And they were ohhhhhhhh soooooooooo cloooooose to getting a win against Penn State. But they did not get one. The Big Red led the Nittany Lions 71-67 with under ten seconds to go. PSU's John Johnson hit a three, and Cornell was up one with five seconds to go. They just needed to inbound it, get fouled, and prevent a full-court play for a basket, and a win was theirs. [last play video omitted].  In Shonn Miller's defense, he had a man. He wasn't just lobbing this one up there. But in effect, he throws the ball across halfcourt where two Penn State players are calmly waiting, giving them the ball with five seconds. DJ Newbill would get the ball and hit a game-winner.  Poor Cornell."
  • Previewing a Cal-Texas game, SB Nation writes, "6-6 Cornell transfer Dwight Tarwater took 83 threes last season for the Big Red, and hasn't been shy about shooting this year in Berkeley."
