ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior guard Chris Wroblewski found some space and hit a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining in overtime to give Cornell a thrilling 85-82 victory over Albany on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Big Red evened its record at 4-4 with a second straight overtime victory at home, while the Great Danes slipped to 5-5.
Wroblewski's big shot put an exclamation point on a wild game that included Cornell rally from a 10-point deficit with nine minutes to play only to take a six-point lead with less than two minutes to play in regulation. Albany then fought back to force overtime on a basket by Blake Metcalf with five seconds left. The lead traded hands [twice] with three times in the five minute extra session before the Big Red senior juked a defender on the left wing. With the Albany player on the ground, Wroblewski stepped back and confidently nailed a trey with three ticks left. Albany got a great shot at the tying basket, but Mike Black's 3-pointer was just long.
Wroblewski had a solid floor game with six points, eight assists and three rebounds, while backcourt mate Drew Ferry had a game-high 26 points, including seven 3-pointers. Josh Figini added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals and Albany native Galal Cancer notched 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Johnathan Gray rounded out the four double figure scorers with 10 points, while Eitan Chemerinski had nine points in just 15 minutes.
Cornell hit 10 3-pointers and was credited with 25 assists with 15 steals, both numbers ranking among the top 10 single-game marks in Cornell history. The 25 assists is the third-most in school history, while the 15 steals ranks seventh. The Big Red also shot 58 percent (21-of-36) from the floor in the second half and overtime.
Albany got 22 points and five assists from Gerardo Suero, one of two Great Danes to foul out. Blake Metcalf also fouled out after registering a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Logan Aronhalt (19 points), Mike Black (15 points) and Luke Devlin (10 points) rounded out the Great Danes' five double figure scorers. Albany was hounded into 25 turnovers and was just 2-of-8 from 3-point range after halftime, though it outrebounded Cornell 42-30.
Cornell and Albany each looked as though they were teams playing their first games after lengthy breaks, though the Big Red brought the energy early. Cornell opened the game by scoring the first five points, including a thunderous dunk by Shonn Miller on a feed from Miles Asafo-Adjei to open the game. Ferry then hit the first of his seven treys after a steal by Wroblewski in the backcourt to force an Albany timeout.
The Great Danes reponded with a 16-3 run to take go up eight points (16-8) seven minutes into the contest and later extended the advantage to as much as 12 (33-21) on a Suero jumper with 2:27 left. Cornell raced down the other end and quickly triggered a quick 6-0 run to end the half, with a trey by Ferry closing out the scoring. After 20 minutes, Cornell trailed just 33-27 in a game in which it had looked thoroughly beaten.
The second half was a different story, as Gray converted a conventional three-point play to get within 33-30 on the first possession. The team traded baskets until consecutive baskets by the Big Red, a layup underneath by Eitan Chemerinski and another 3-pointer by Ferry gave Cornell a short-lived 45-44 lead. Albany went back up 48-47 two minutes later as part of a 12-0 run. Suero had four points and Aronhalt nailed a 3-pointer on an inbounds play to put the great Danes up 57-47 withy just 8:50 to play.
Ferry started the comeback with a 3-pointer, then converted a three-point play on the break on consecutive possessions to make it a four-point game, but Albany answered again with four straight free throws by Suero to push it back to eight. The Big Red then started a run of its own, scoring 17 of the next 19 points to turn the deficit into a 70-63 lead with 3:25 left when Cancer hit a twisting layup on a feed from Asafo-Adjei.
Albany wasn't to be put down yet, getting back within four on a jumper by Black with 1:37 left. Figini answered with a dunk on a pass from Cancer to put the home team back up 75-69 with 34 seconds left, but that still wasn't enough cushion. Black got a driving layup, and after a steal and 3-point basket by Aronhalt, Wroblewski missed the first and made the second free throw to put Cornell up 76-74 with 17 seconds remaining. Albany, holding for the final shot to tie, finally got a driving Suero to open up Metcalf underneath. His great find gave Metcalf an easy layup to knot the game with five seconds left. Cornell's inbounds pass was long, into the hands or Suero, but his wild shot at the buzzer was off and the teams readied for overtime.
Overtime was another back and forth affair, with both Suero and Metcalf fouling out in the first four minutes of a tie game. A layup by Black with 30 seconds left knotted the game at 82-82, and Cornell decided to hold for the last shot. The ball was in Wroblewski's hands much of the possession, and he finally lifted off for the eventual game winner with three seconds to play.
Cornell will return to action on Monday, Dec. 19, when it faces Illinois at 7 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.com.

ITHACA — Cornell’s Chris Wroblewski hit a 3-pointer from the right wing with 5.6 seconds left to give the Big Red an 85-82 overtime win over the University at Albany Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena.
The Danes quickly called timeout and had 2.8 seconds to get the tie. Inbounding from three quarters court, Luke Devlin threw the all into Jayson Guerier at halfcourt, who quickly got it to Mike Black, who got off a decent look for a game-tying 3.
His shot missed and the Big Red had the win.
The Danes, who led by 10 midway through the second half, needed a basket in the waning seconds by Blake Metcalf to force the extra session.
Drew Foley had a career-high 26 points for the Big Red (4-4) and Josh Figini added 14. Galal Cancer, a freshman from Albany, had 11 points for Cornell.
Gerardo Suero, who fouled out 22 seconds into overtime, led Albany (5-5) with 22 points. The rest of the starting five also scored in double figures: Logan Aronhalt (19), Black (15), Metcalf (12), and Devlin (10).
The Danes had 25 turnovers in the game.

With the Great Danes up 33-21 with 2:23 left to play, the Big Red responded by ending the half on a 6-0 run capped by three pointer by Drew Ferry to cut the deficit, 33-27.
UAlbany would dominate the boards, 42-30, 11 of which were offensive boards.

ITHACA — Winning or losing Saturday's basketball game at Cornell should not have come down to the final shot in overtime. When Mike Black's 3-pointer hit the back of the rim and bounced away, the player grimaced and shook his head.
On his way to the lockerroom, he could see the final score in lights: Cornell 85, UAlbany 82.
"Nah, it never should have come down to that," Black said. "Look at how many turnovers we had. We lost the game right there."
Black and the rest of the Danes most likely won't want to review the turnovers from this one, which was played at Newman Arena in front of 1,477. And neither will coach Will Brown, who watched the Danes throw the ball all over the gym.
When it was done, UAlbany had turned the ball over a season-high 25 times, and that led to 37 Cornell points. The Big Red had 25 assists.
Cornell (4-4, 4-1 at home) trailed by 10 points with 8:49 left but continued to hit big shot after big shot to stay in the game.
The game-winner came from an unlikely source. Senior Chris Wroblewski, who started on the 2010 Cornell team that went to the NCAA Sweet 16, hit a 3-pointer from the deep right wing with 5.6 seconds left in overtime to give the Big Red the winning points.
Wroblewski, who finished with six points, had missed his first six 3-point attempts.
Cornell coach Bill Courtney said the winning play was designed for freshman Galal Cancer, who is from Albany and went to CBA. Wroblewski, dribbling down the right side, kept it for himself after shaking free from Black, who was defending.
"That is our M.O," Courtney said after the Big Red made 10 of 30 from 3-point range. "Even if we're not shooting well and they are good shots, that's OK. We know that Chris is a good shooter, and eventually he was going to make some shots."
Before the game went to overtime, the Danes (5-5) almost won it in regulation. Junior Blake Metcalf scored inside with five seconds left to tie the game at 76-76. Then, junior guard Gerardo Suero, who led the Danes with 22 points, stole the inbounds pass and got off a shot that missed as the buzzer sounded.
Suero fouled out 22 seconds into overtime. Black scored all six of the Danes points in the extra session but couldn't hit the one the team absolutely had to have.
Logan Aronhalt had 19 points for the Danes and played 40 of the 45 minutes. The other three starters — Black (15 points), Metcalf (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Luke Devlin (10 points) — also scored in double figures.
Suero and Aronhalt each had six turnovers and Black had five.
"The turnovers just killed us," Metcalf said. "We played a good game, we just couldn't take care of the ball."
Drew Ferry led the Big Red with a career-high 26 points. Cancer, who played 30 minutes, made five of 10 shots from the field and scored 11 points.
The Danes won't have much time to feel sorry for themselves. They bused back to Albany on Saturday night and were scheduled to practice Sunday before leaving for Brooklyn, where the UAlbany will play St. Francis (N.Y.) Monday night.
