News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...

Above, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) in his fourth day of the Portland Trailblazers' training camp.

  • Jeff Foote, who is under contract with the NBA D-League's Springfield Armor while participating in Portland Trailblazers' training camp, makes the NBA D-League's "Prospect Watch"-- a listing of the top D-Leauge prospects for call-ups to the NBA during the 2011-2012 season. The D-League writes, " You want to know who's got inside tracks, who's got an outside shot and who may be headed back to their NBA D-League teams for now. We feel you." Tonight and Thursday, Foote's D-League Armor team faces the Erie Bay Hawks, coached by former Cornell assistant coach, Jay Larranaga. The Erie Time Dispatch previews the game and writes, "The Armor acquired Jeff Foote, a 7-footer out of Cornell whom Erie tried to use a practice player during training camp. The D-League didn't allow teams to have practice players in camp. Larranaga knew Foote from his time as an assistant at Cornell. Foote is averaging 16 points, 9.5 rebounds in two games."
  • Former Cornell head basketball coach, Mike Dement, has resigned from his head coaching position at North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG). He served as head coach of Cornell between 1986-1991. In 1988 he led Cornell to the Ivy League title and the 1988 NCAA Tournament. From our regular series, A Date in Cornell Basketball History (above), Dement is pictured above with the 1987-1988 Cornell-Ivy League championship team. Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News writes on the employment termination of Dement, "He was a consistent winner at Cornell, Greensboro and SMU," Dement's three head coaching stops.
  • Aaron Osgood (Cornell '11) was named to EuroBasket.com's weekly honor roll for his play last week for hisVaerlose club in Denmark's premier league.
  • Commenting last night on committed Cornell recruit, Braxston Bunce (Kelowna Secondary School) Kelowna, BC, Canada, 6-11, Kelowna Secondary School (Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada) football coach Ben Macauly writes in his blog, "As one might expect, Braxston Bunce was dominant inside the paint and Cornell will be happy, seeing the way he is moving up and down the floor. For a minute I thought Bill Walton was roaming the hardwood."

Plum senior guard Nolan Cressler became the sixth player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 career points, finishing with 25 last night. The Cornell recruit reached the milestone on a free throw with 2:32 left in the first quarter. "I couldn't enjoy it as much if we had won the game," Cressler said. "Maybe later tonight or tomorrow I'll feel a little bit better." "I'm sure he wishes it would have come under conditions where we won the basketball game, but still, it's quite a feat," Mustangs coach Ron Richards said. "In high school they keep reducing the number of games, and hopefully, Nolan will continue to play well the rest of the year."

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 14 is No. 234 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 175 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 225. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
