News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Cornell Big Red's game at Penn State tonight, Wednesday, December 21, 2011 with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...

  • Our Tweets of the Day from the world of Cornell Basketball on the twittersphere.
  • Below, Penn State's ComRadio previews the Cornell-Penn State game for tonight.

  • SB Nation writes, "The Penn St. Nittany Lions will play their final non-conference game on 2011-12 on Wednesday as they host the Cornell Big Red. Penn State is coming off an easy win against Mount St. Mary's and currently hold a 7-5 record. The Big Red aren't faring quite so well in the young season, with a 4-5 record after dropping a game against No. 24 Illinois on Monday. Lions guard Tim Frazier is a player to keep an eye on in the game. According to the official Penn State Athletics website, Frazier is the only NCAA Division I player averaging over 17 points and seven rebounds per game. He was named as a candidate for the Bob Cousy Award on Monday. The game will begin at 7:30 PM ET on Wednesday, December 21 at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, PA. You can watch the game on the Big Ten Network or listen to the game on Penn State Sports Network 1450 AM or on Sirius 131."
  • IllinoisHQ writes, "...There was another brief negative barrage at home Monday, when Bruce Weber called time with Cornell leading 42-36. The Illini, who trailed by 10 earlier, caught up at 32-32 but shot 1 of 12 to start the second half, and it didn't look good. But to its credit, the home assemblage was in full voice when the timeout ended, and Weber's up-and-down team responded. The Illini needed every bit of the Assembly Hall advantage to quell Cornell's Big Red uprising, 64-60... The 82-75 verdict against Gonzaga stands as the UI's best performance but was followed by extended stretches of mediocrity: Illinois trailed St. Bonaventure 39-30; Coppin State climbed within 59-57 with 7:00 to go; UNLV rolled 64-48 Saturday; and Cornell led 48-44 before Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson drained six clutch jumpers in the last 7:38."
  • St. Louis Today writes, "Challenged at home by St. Bonaventure, Coppin State and Cornell, Illinois has refused to fold, and maintained a No. 25 ranking... [Brandon] Paul has shown an ability to take over games down the stretch, making all of the big plays that produced the win over St. Bonaventure and several key buckets against Cornell."
  • The New York Post notes that Ryan Woerner, an assistant coach at SUNY New Paltz and former assistant coach at Xavier High School in New York was an "intern with the Cornell men’s basketball team that went to the Sweet 16 in 2009-10"
  • The Steel Bottom blog reports, "The Springfield Armor announced today that they have waived Michael Sturns to make room for the return of center Jeff Foote. The current Armor roster stands at 10. Foote returns to the Armor after a stint in the Portland Trail Blazers’ training camp. Foote, who was acquired from the NBA D-League available player pool on Nov. 29, played in two games with the Armor (one start) and averaged 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 32.5 minutes. Foote will be available when the Armor travel to Bismarck, ND to take on the Dakota Wizards on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 9:00 PM EST."

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 21 is No. 179 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 168 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 203. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
