News and Notes: Thursday Edition

Get all the information you need about the Big Red's game on Saturday, December 17, 2011 (2 PM) vs. Albany, with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Thursday...

  • Our Tweets of the Day from the world of Cornell Basketball on the twittersphere.

  • From our regular series, A Date in Cornell Basketball History, above media clippings announcing the hiring of Walter Haggerty in 1908 as Cornell's first officially recognized head coach of the men's basketball program.

Nolan Cressler

Plum

Last week: Cressler scored his 1,000th career point Tuesday against Kiski Area while helping the Plum Mustangs to a 2-1 start.

The skinny: Cressler, a 6-foot-4 swing guard and one of the top seniors in the WPIAL, has committed to Cornell of the Ivy League. He averaged 25.5 points per game his junior season. His brother, Andrew, was also a standout at Plum and plays at Seton Hill.

-What did it mean to break 1,000? It's a great milestone to achieve. My brother achieved it. It's a fun thing to accomplish, but I have bigger goals for my team. -Which team on your schedule are you most looking forward to playing? I'd say Gateway because they're the defending [WPIAL Class AAAA] champions. But if we play like we're capable of, I think we can compete with anybody.
-Player from another school you would love to have on your team? I'll pick two because if I only pick one, the other will get mad. One would be [Highlands'] Micah Mason because he's just a great guard. I think we'd complement each other well. The other one would be Shakim Alonzo from Woodland Hills. He can do some damage down low.
-Best player you went up against in AAU? It would probably be [Baylor recruit] Isaiah Austin. He's the No. 3 or 4 player in the country. I may have played against better players, but I saw him having the most potential.
-You have a funny Twitter name. (Laughs) Yeah, it's NC_Hammer24.
-Are you an MC Hammer fan? I like the song "U Can't Touch This." Somebody called me [NC Hammer] once, and I thought it was funny.
-What do you want for Christmas? Well, I know I'm getting some Cornell gear. I would say an iPhone, but my plan isn't up yet, so I doubt I'll get it.
-Most people would be surprised to know that ... Sometimes before games I listen to opera music. There are a couple of opera songs I listen to. I like Andrea Bocelli.

  • High school basketball prospect, Nathaniel Goetz (Emery-Weiner HS) Houston, TX, 6-1, G, is profiled in the Bellaire (Texas) Examiner. The Examiner writes:

Emery-Weiner senior guard Nathaniel Goetz has the ability to do just about anything on a basketball court. “He’s a great all-around player,” Jaguars boys basketball coach Patrick Pellerin said. “He shoots the ball, and he’s our best rebounder, as well as our best offensive person. Without him, we’d struggle. He’s our team captain and the vocal (person) on the team.” ...Goetz, a four-year starter for Emery, is averaging 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and 3.5 steals, and he’d like to play college basketball next winter. But his first priority is academics. Cornell, a member of the prestigious Ivy League, has expressed interest in having Goetz play for the team, which qualified for the NCAA Division I Sweet 16 in 2010. “I would love to play on a Division I team, especially at a great academic school,” Goetz said. Goetz visited Cornell’s campus in Ithaca, N.Y. earlier this month, but the focus was on academics. An aspiring Architect, Goetz attended his mandatory Architecture interview. “Cornell is the best Architecture school in the country,” Goetz said. “(I’m interested in Architecture) because it’s magnificent how man can make something so beautiful and big, and everybody can see it,” Goetz said. “I’ve always wanted people to know what I do, and I think Architecture is a good way to do that.” Goetz balances his time between Architecture and athletics. He works on his game in the summer, along with Coach Pellerin, but doesn’t compete in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Basketball. Goetz started an Architecture Club at Emery and has attended Architecture camps at the University of Texas. He’s also considering attending school at UT, Virginia, Cal Poly and Oregon.“I’m keeping my options open,” Goetz said. “I’m not necessarily trying to go to school for basketball.”

  • Ithaca.com writes on new athletic facilities at Ithaca College, Cornell and local high schools, " Currently the Armory in New York and Cornell’s Barton Hall are the only places in the state that have eight lanes all the way around the track. Those eight lanes are required to host a state championship meet... unless some very famous athlete from one of these schools comes back and makes a big grant, for instance Jeff Foote makes the NBA and buys [Spencer Van Etten High School] a new gym, we can’t expect any help in new facilities."
  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 15 is No. 234 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 175 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 223. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
