News and Notes: Wednesday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...

  • Above, from our series A Date in Cornell Basketball History, a game program and recap from the Associated Press of Cornell's January 16, 1946 defeat to NYU in a double-header feature at Madison Square Garden.

  • Above, our Tweets of the Day from the world of Cornell Basketball.
  • Lehigh Valley Live writes, "With their 81-79 loss to Cornell University over the weekend, the [Lehigh] Mountain Hawks’ overall record is 7-3."
  • The Washington Examiner writes, "Now comes the easy part for the Maryland basketball team. At least that's the plan. Over the next four weeks, the Terrapins will play six judiciously spaced home games against small-conference teams, none of which currently have a winning record... First up for Maryland (4-3) on Wednesday is Mount St. Mary's (1-6) of the Northeast Conference, followed by games with Florida International (2-6) of the Sun Belt, Radford (3-6) of the Big South, Albany (4-4) of the America East, Samford (1-5) of the Southern Conference, and Cornell (3-4) of the Ivy." On the same topic, the Testudo Times writes, "[for Maryland] things wrap up with Cornell, a 3-4 team that hasn't played any team better than Buffalo or St. Bonaventure (and lost both of those). The best KenPom ranking of the [next] six [Maryland opponents] is Cornell's 174... I know I said that every game for Maryland will be tough - and teams like FIU and Cornell could pose problems - but, in all honesty, they should go 6-0 for the rest of December."
  • Noontime Sports notes with respect to Harvard's recent national ranking, "The last Ivy League school to be ranked nationally was Cornell two years ago. That year, the Big Red ended up going to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament."
  • Discussing Ed Cooley's early tenure at Providence, the Friarbasketball.net writes, "While one of the knocks on Cooley was that he did not make the NCAA Tournament in his five seasons at Fairfield (he did win 20 in his final two), it took [Steve] Donahue seven years before he had his first winning season at Cornell and eight before making the dance, so it can be hard to draw parallels to their tenures at Fairfield and Cornell."
  • Rush The Court notes that Steve Donahue's Eagles are currently on pace to join Utah as the worst power conference teams in the history of Ken Pomeroy’s rankings. Ironically, Harvard defeated Utah earlier this season and is also scheduled to face Boston College.
  • Game Recaps-Below are links to our game recap sections from each of Cornell's games this season.

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 7 is No. 240 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 172 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 226. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
