Get all the information you need about the Cornell Big Red's season and home opening game vs. Western Michigan this Saturday (November 10, 12 pm) as part of Cornell Basketball Alumni Weekend with The Cornell Basketball Blog's Game Preview Center. Below, some news and notes for Friday...
  • Ever dreamed of watching Cornell from inside Cameron Indoor Stadium while sitting in the famed Duke student section (AKA, "the Cameron Crazies")?  Here is your chance.  Bid on them on EBay!
  • Time Warner Cable (YNN) writes, "Behind the returns of Ivy League Rookie of the Year Shonn Miller and senior forward Errick Peck, who missed all of last season due to injury, the Cornell men's basketball team is optimistic heading into the third year of head coach Bill Courtney's tenure. Cornell opens the season Saturday at home against Western Michigan starting at 2 p.m.Click here for Cornell's preview of the season and Saturday's game."
  • MLive.com has published several articles leading up to Saturday's game vs. WMU.
  • BroncoBlitz.com says there are five keys to the game for WMU to defeat Cornell.  These keys are in part (see the full article here):
1. Weather the storm
With Cornell's aggressive style of play on offense and defense, and everything else that goes along with opening up the season at home in front of rowdy fans, the Broncos will have to be careful not to turn the ball over and allow big plays out of the chute...
2. Transition defense
Cornell's guards in particular will look to push the tempo all game. The Big Red coaching staff has made it quite clear by starting point guard Miles Asafo-Adjei in favor of Johnathan Gray, that this is especially the case....
4. No easy buckets
In order to beat Cornell, the Broncos will look to do just about anything they can to make life more difficult in the paint defensively...
5. Win the turnover battle
This last one seems obvious but when you're playing on the road against a team that's as aggressive on defense as the Big Red are, it's extremely important to take care of the basketball....
  • The Trentonian writes, ""The Ivy schedule won’t be easy either. Harvard, Penn, Columbia and Cornell are all dangerous, and the [Princeton] Tigers preseason ranking means they’ll get everyone’s best shot."
  • The University of Alabama Athletics Department notes in the Tide's season opener game notes, ""UA is 21-3 in home season openers at Coleman Coliseum. Those three losses have come to Cornell in 2009, Mercer in 2008 and Chattanooga in 1993
  • The Boston Globe makes reference to former Cornell post player, Chris Vandenberg (Cornell '05) and writes, "It used to be that, for intrepid coaches with heavy parkas, Canada was a place to make a find. [Steve] Donahue recalled a 6-foot-10-inch player he nabbed his first year at Cornell who likely would have gone to the Big East if he had been born in the United States."
  • In Cornell pro alumni news, Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) and his Zalgiris team of Lithuania face Anadolu Efes (Turkey) today in the EuroLeague.  Zalgiris is the No. 2 ranked team in Europe and has yet to lose a game in any of the three leagues in which it competes.  Louis Dale (Cornell '10) and his KAOD team of Greece face Ikaros on Saturday in Greek premier league, A1 action.  Jeff Aubry (Cornell '99) and the Halcones Rojos of the Mexican LNBP face Panteras on Saturday.
