LOUDONVILLE – How will the Siena men’s basketball team handle a taste of success? Head coach Jimmy Patsos will find out on Friday night, when the Saints take on winless Cornell at Ithaca.
Siena is coming off its first victory of the season, and the first of Patsos’ career with the Saints, a last-second 72-70 triumph over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday.
“Completely in fear,” Patsos described his emotions. “Here’s the problem. I don’t care if it’s the NFL, major-league baseball, college football, college basketball. Teams have a good win. The Jets were heading to the playoffs, they sign Ed Reed, here we go, and then they went into Buffalo and laid an egg. It’s not because Rex (Ryan) didn’t tell them anything. It’s all about how what did you the game before to turn into the next game.”
Cornell (0-5) is coming off a 23-point loss at Colgate last night. However, the Bears also led Syracuse by six at halftime of an eventual 82-60 loss in the season opener. Then Cornell took Loyola (Md.), Patsos’ old club, to overtime in a 93-89 loss in Ithaca.
Patsos noted that Cornell freshman guard Robert Hatter had 32 points in the Loyola game. Sophomore guard Nolan Cressler is leading the Big Red at 17 ppg.
It’s the first year of a four-year contract between Siena and Cornell.
“I”m excited to go there,” Patsos said. “I’ve only played Cornell once … I know they’re good because they’re in the middle of the Ivy (League) and the Ivy now is a really good league.”
Siena won’t have freshman center Javion Ogunyemi, who sprained his right ankle against St. Bonaventure. He’ll miss 7 to 10 days, according to Patsos, and won’t travel to Cornell or to Purdue on Sunday. He will travel to Orlando for the Old Spice Classic over Thanksgiving, though it’s uncertain when he’ll play.
