VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men’s basketball (0-2) looks to get in the win column when the Bearcats travel the short distance up to Ithaca for a Wednesday night encounter with Cornell (0-2). The Bearcats and Big Red tip-off at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena. It will mark BU’s second-straight game against an Ivy League member and will finish up a three-games-in-six-days stretch to open the 2013-14 campaign.
The Bearcats are coming off a disappointing 74-57 loss at Brown on Sunday. Fresh off a strong showing in its opening loss to Loyola on Friday, Binghamton couldn’t duplicate its performance in Providence and 30% shooting plus Brown’s 40 points in the paint spelled defeat. The Bearcats were whistled for eight fouls in the game’s first 5:04 and three BU starters were sent to the bench with two fouls apiece. Brown used an inside-based 10-0 run to build an eight-point halftime lead and then opened the second half with a 13-4 run to take control. Despite nine second-half points from freshman forward Nick Madray, BU could close no closer than seven points.
Freshman guard Marlon Beck II netted 13 points (9 in first half) and classmate Yosef Yacob added 12 points. Sophomore guard Jordan Reed contributed eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Reed, however, struggled from the field (2-for-16) and fouled out of his second straight game after playing 28 games last season without a disqualification. Reed (18.5 ppg., 11.0 rpg.) is still averaging a double-double two games into the season.
Madray earned America East Rookie of the Week honors after averaging 15.5 points in his first two collegiate games. The 6-foot-9 forward made a splash in his first collegiate game with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting against Loyola. He then added nine points and four rebounds in 23 minutes against Brown. In the two games, Madray is shooting 65% from the field - including 57% from three-point range - and is a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
The Bearcats’ starting lineup features three freshmen and a sophomore - and another freshman, Beck, is playing 32 minutes a game off the bench.
Cornell is coming off a 93-89 home overtime loss to Loyola on Sunday. Before that, the Big Red led No. 8/7 Syracuse by 14 points (and by six at the half) before losing their opener 82-60 at the Carrier Dome. In the Loyola game, Cornell put four players in double figures, committed just nine turnovers and shot 47% from the field, but 14 missed free throws were costly. Freshman Robert Hatter scored a career-high 32 points and senior Dwight Tarwater notched a career-best 21 points and 11 rebounds. Binghamton fans will recall Loyola standout Dylon Cormier, who followed up his 31-point showing against BU with 34 points, 11 rebounds and three steals against Cornell. Cormier hit a backbreaking 3-pointer with 13 seconds left in the extra session to seal the Big Red’s fate.
Hatter leads the team with a 20.5 scoring average. Sophomore guard Nolan Cressler (18.5 ppg.) and Tarwater (12.5 ppg., 6.5 rpg.) are also putting up big early-season numbers.
Cornell was picked to finish sixth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll. The team returns six letterwinners from last season’s 13-18 squad that finished sixth in the Ivy League with a 5-9 record.
The Big Red lead the all-time series between the two schools 6-2. The home team has won seven of the eight meetings - with the one exception being Cornell’s 79-77 win last season at the Events Center. In that December 30 matchup, Reed tallied game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds but the guests put five players in double figures, built a 15-point halftime bulge and held off a late Binghamton charge. Two years ago at Newman Arena, Cornell posted a 76-61 win to improve to 5-0 at home in the all-time series.
