HEAD COACH BILL COURTNEY
Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his fourth season at Cornell (35-52, .402; 18-24 Ivy, .429) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
STORY LINES:
The Cornell men's basketball team will open the 2013-14 season with a pair of huge challenges, visiting #8/7 Syracuse on Friday, Nov. 8 and returning home to meet Loyola (Md.) on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. Both opponents were postseason squads a year ago, with the Orange advancing to the NCAA Final Four and the Greyhounds advancing to the quarterfinals of the CIT.
Coming off a 13-18 season (5-9 Ivy), fourth-year head coach Bill Courtney will have to replace four starters to open the season. The loss of starters Miles Asafo-Adjei, Eitan Chemerinski, Johnathan Gray and Errick Peck leaves a leadership void, but creates plenty of opportunities for others. Also gone to graduation are Josh Figini and Peter McMillan, while Galal Cancer has also left the team. In addition, returning first-team All-Ivy League forward Shonn Miller continues to recover from an injury that has left him sidelined throughout the preseason. He continues his rehab with the hope of returning during the 2013-14 campaign.
While four regular starters are gone, which would sound like an insurmountable obstacle, Courtney will have a number of players in uniform to build around. Leading the way are sophomore Nolan Cressler and junior Devin Cherry.
Cressler will attempt to build on a strong rookie season that saw him rank among the team's leading scorers (9.3 ppg.) and the league's top distance shooters (.403 3-point percentage with a team-high 54 treys). Not only does he have the ability to stretch defenses with his range, but he also has a solid mid-range offensive game that includes an array of floaters and pull-ups. An outstanding rebounder from the guard position, he averaged nearly four rebounds per game at 6-4. The two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week exploded onto the scene with 20 points in a win over Western Michigan in his collegiate debut and closed strong by averaging 15.0 points over the team's final six games of the season.
Cherry is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands and was instant offense off the bench for the Big Red a year ago. He now moves into more of a central role after averaging 6.2 points per game as a reserve. Cherry hit for double figures seven times on the year and had broken into the starting lineup before missing the final four games of his sophomore season with an injury. Though he has a scorer's mentality, Cherry is fully capable of running the offense from either guard position and has emerged as an off-court leader for the Big Red.
A number of players, including seniors Dwight Tarwater and Dominic Scelfo, junior Deion Giddens and sophomore Braxston Bunce, along with freshmen David Onuorah, Darryl Smith and Robert Hatter will also be expected to contribute.
A WIN OVER SYRACUSE WOULD:
• be the eighth win in the last nine season openers and its fourth victory in a row.
• snap a six-game skid dating back to last season.
• be the first over Syracuse since Dec. 4, 1968 when it topped SU 94-82 at Barton Hall in Ithaca.
• be the first over an ACC team since topping Wake Forest during the 1951-52 campaign, a 58-51 Big Red victory on the road.
• be the 1,210th in program history (1,209-1,326 in 114 seasons).
ABOUT SYRACUSE:
• Syracuse opens the 2013-14 season after going 30-10 a year ago and advancing to the Final Four.
• The Orange, in their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, return three starters from that squad, including All-America candidate and preseason ACC Player of the Year C.J. Fair (14.5 ppg., 7.0 rpg.).
• Also returning will be junior forward Rakeem Christmas (5.1 ppg., 4.6 rpg.) and sophomore center DaJuan Coleman (4.8 ppg., 4.0 rpg.).
• Among the newcomers expected to contribute immediately will be freshman guard Tyler Ennis at point guard.
• Hall of Fame head coach Jim Boeheim is in his 38th year directing the Syracuse program and has a 920-314 record.
• The Orange have dominated the series with the Big Red, winning 33 straight games dating all the way back to 1968.
• Syracuse won a pair of preseason exhibition games against Holy Family and Ryerson, and also were 4-0 during an August exhibition trip through Canada.
THE CORNELL-SYRACUSE SERIES:
• Syracuse leads the all-time series 87-31 and carries a 33-game win streak against the Big Red into the contest.
• The two teams had their first meeting in 1900-01, an 18-15 victory by the Orange.
• Cornell is 1-20 all-time at the Carrier Dome and 0-19 vs. the Orange.
• Its only win at the Dome was a 75-54 win over St. Francis (PA) to open the 2005-06 season as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
CORNELL VS. ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE:
• The Big Red is 38-128 against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, including 31-87 against first-year conference member Syracuse.
• The Big Red has faced Boston College (0-3), Clemson (0-2), Duke (0-5), Georgia Tech (0-3), Maryland (0-2), Miami (FL) (0-1), North Carolina (0-3), North Carolina State (0-5), Notre Dame (1-5), Pittsburgh (5-11) and Wake Forest (1-1).
• Cornell has never faced Florida State, Virginia or Virginia Tech.
• This game is the only scheduled meeting between the Big Red and an ACC team this year.
• Excluding the first year schools (Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse), the team's lone win over an ACC foe came against Wake Forest during the 1951-52 season, a 58-51 victory on the road.
• Since then, the Big Red has lost 25 consecutive games to current members of the ACC by an average margin of 24.5 points per game.
• Only five of those 25 games have been decided by single digits.
LAST TIME VS. THE ORANGE:
• No. 7/9 Syracuse jumped off to a hot start, controlled the backboards and remained unbeaten on the season with a 78-58 victory over Cornell on Nov. 30, 2010 at the Carrier Dome.
• Errick Peck matched his career high of 14 points. Peck had 10 of his points in the first half, including an alley-oop dunk to open the scoring for the Big Red on its first possession, and added two assists and a steal.
• Chris Wroblewski chipped in with eight points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals and Drew Ferry connected on three 3-pointers for nine points.
• Adam Wire had six rebounds and a game-high four steals in the loss for the visitors, who shot 34 percent for the game and were outrebounded 48-27.
• The team had a season-high 13 steaks and forced 20 turnovers.
• Rick Jackson had 17 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in 31 productive minutes for SU, which shot 50 percent from the floor.
• Kris Joseph (16 points) and Dion Waiters (11 points) were also in double figures.
• SU dominated the first half, taking a 38-17 lead into the break after limiting Cornell to 24 percent shooting over the first 20 minutes. Included was a 1-of-12 effort from beyond the arc (8 percent).
ABOUT LOYOLA (MD):
• First-year head coach G.G. Smith brings the Greyhounds into the Patriot League with two starters and eight letter winners returning.
• The 2012-13 squad finished 23-12 (12-6 MAAC).
• Loyola finished tied for second in the Metro Atlantic a season ago and advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIT tournament.
• Senior guard Dylon Cormier is the only player among the top four scorers to return.
• He led the squad in scoring (16.4 ppg.) to go along with 4.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
THE CORNELL-LOYOLA (MD) SERIES:
• Cornell has won the only previous meeting against Loyola.
• The two teams met in the second game of the 2008 NIT Preseason Tip-Off East Regional, with Cornell earning an 82-72 decision at Boston College.
• The Big Red went on to finish with a 21-10 record and won its second of three straight Ivy League titles. Loyola (MD) went 12-20 that season in the MAAC.
CORNELL VS. PATRIOT LEAGUE:
• Cornell is 142-118 all-time against current members of the Patriot League, including 1-0 against first-year Patriot League member Loyola (MD).
• The Big Red has also played American (1-1), Army (20-13), Boston University (2-2),Bucknell (23-25), Colgate (71-53), Holy Cross (2-3), Lafayette (7-11), Lehigh (13-9) and Navy (2-1).
• Cornell has split the last 14 meetings with Patriot League opponents right down the middle (7-7).
• Cornell has two scheduled games against Patriot League foes this season, as it will also visit Colgate on Nov. 20.
LAST TIME VS. THE GREYHOUNDS:
• In a sloppy game played by two teams bordering on exhaustion, the All-Ivy connection of Ryan Wittman and Jeff Foote proved too much as Cornell claimed an 82-72 victory over Loyola (MD) on Nov. 18, 2008 at Boston College's Conte Forum in the consolation round of the NIT Preseason Tip-Off's East Regional.
• Loyola was playing its fourth game in five days and the Big Red was playing its second game in 19 hours after falling to St. John's in a physical contest the previous night.
• Wittman scored a game-high 24 points and added four rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the Big Red, while Foote posted 19 points, eight rebounds and a career-best seven blocked shots in the victory.
• Alex Tyler chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds and Geoff Reeves notched 12.
• In his first collegiate start, Chris Wroblewski scored four points, grabbed four rebounds and had six assists in 30 minutes of action.
• The Big Red limited the Greyhounds to 37 percent shootingand dominated Loyola on the backboards 50-36.
• Cornell also won the hustle plays, blocking nine shots, making eight steals and grabbing 21 offensive rebounds.
• Tony Lewis scored 23 points and had eight rebounds to pace the Greyhounds, with Brett Harvey had 18 points, including 11 in the final 2:21 of the contest.
THE STREAKS:
• Cornell is 107-73 (.594) in the last six seasons.
• The Big Red is 56-28 (.667) in its last 84 Ivy League contests over the last six years.
• Cornell is 60-22 (.732) over its last 82 home games.
• In non-conference games, the Big Red is 50-45 (.526) over the last six seasons vs. scholarship programs.
• The Big Red is 7-3 on the road in its last 10 games away from Newman Arena.
NOTES TO KNOW:
• Cornell will be meeting a nationally ranked team to open a season for the first time since the 1992-93 campaign when it faced No. 17 Syracuse at the Carrier Dome and dropped a 97-65 decision en route to a 16-10 season.
• The Big Red last won a season opener on the road against a BCS team in 2009-10 when it knocked off Alabama 71-67.
• Cornell's leading returning scorer who will dress this weekend in terms of career points is sophomore Nolan Cressler (288 points).
• The Big Red bring a six-game losing streak into the season, its longest since Cornell lost eight in a row during the 2010-11 season.
• Cornell is 1-20 all-time at the Carrier Dome, picking up its lone victory with a 75-54 triumph over St. Francis (Pa.) to open the 2005-06 season as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The Big Red is 0-19 all-time against the Orange in the Dome.
• Cornell has increased its win totals in each of the last two seasons under head coach Bill Courtney, from 10 in 2010-11 after graduating eight seniors from the previous year's NCAA Sweet 16 team, to 12 in 2011-12 to 13 a year ago.

• The Big Red will play host to Binghamton on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena.
