News and Notes: Wednesday Afternoon Edition

  • Cornell has added Big Red All American track & field star, Montez Blair to its men's basketball team.  Prior to competing in track for Cornell, Blair, a 6'3" wing, played high school basketball in New Jersey for Timber Creek, a season of Division I basketball for Navy and a semester of junior college basketball at Iowa Western.  In high school, he had offers from St. Joseph's PA, Harvard, Siena, Binghamton and Princeton.  He was also recruited and offered by Cornell. During 2009-2010, Blair appeared in 11 games for the Navy Midshipmen, transferring midseason when he was dissatisfied with life at the Academy.  As a freshman, he averaged 5.2 minutes, and 2.4 points per game, shooting, 35% from the floor and 32% beyond the arc. As a sophomore, he played half a season during 2010-2011 with Iowa Western. He averaged 13.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and earned scholarship offers as a transfer for basketball from IPFW, Southern Utah, Eastern Illinois and Dartmouth according to JucoJunction.com, but opted to compete in track at Cornell.
