HEAD COACH BILL COURTNEY
Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his fourth season at Cornell (35-57, .380; 18-24 Ivy, .429) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.
STORY LINES: The Cornell men's basketball team is hoping home cooking will get the Big Red back on track and will start a short two-game homestand when it plays host to Siena on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena. Cornell has played some good basketball despite its 0-5 start, with two of the losses coming to 2013 NCAA Final Four squads (Syracuse, Louisville) and three total coming at the hands of 2013 postseason squads (Syracuse and Louisville - NCAA, Loyola - CIT) that went a combined 88-27. Cornell has showed glimpses of outstanding basketball despite its heavy reliance on underclassmen and inexperienced upperclassmen. Four of the team's top six scorers are freshmen or sophomores and the three top upperclassmen had made a combined 23 career starts entering the year. The Big Red led No. 8/7 Syracuse by 14 points in the first half and by six at the break, led a Loyola (MD) team that won 23 games a year ago by seven points with five minutes remaining and had a 19-point advantage against Binghamton with 13 minutes left before the team's youth came out and the Big Red went on to drop all three contests. No. 3/3 Louisville controlled its game from the opening tip and Colgate broke out after halftime to send Cornell to its 11 consecutive loss dating back to last season.
Sophomore guard Nolan Cressler is off to a great start, averaging 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in his first five games, while freshman guard Robert Hatter is scoring 10.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Senior forward Dwight Tarwater is posting 8.6 points and 5.8 rebounds and freshman center Robert Onuorah (5.2 ppg., 4.8 rpg., 1.4 bpg.) and junior guard Devin Cherry (6.6 ppg., 3.6 rpg., 3.4 apg.) round out the starting lineup. The Big Red is scoring 68.0 points on 41 percent shooting, but is allowing 88.8 points on 50 percent shooting, including 47 percent from 3-point range.
Siena and first-year head coach Jimmy Patsos are 1-3 on the year but come into the matchup after an impressive 72-70 home win over previously unbeaten St. Bonaventure on Tuesday evening thanks to a buzzer-beater by Marquis Wright, who had seven points and seven assists in the win. Lavon Long had a team-high 15 points. Through four games, junior swingman Rob Poole is averaging a team-high 15.5 points. The Saints have lost close contests to Albany, Vermont and La Salle before picking up the Franciscan Cup victory over the Bonnies.
A WIN OVER SIENA WOULD:
• avoid the Big Red's first 0-6 start to a season since the 1981-82 campaign.
• snap an 11-game skid dating back to last season.
• even the all-time series between the programs at 2-2.
• end a six-game home skid.
• be the 1,210th in program history (1,209-1,331 in 114 seasons).
ABOUT SIENA:
• The Saints and first-year head coach Jimmy Patsos are off to a 1-3 start after knocking off previously unbeaten St. Bonaventure 72-70 on Tuesday evening. They previously had dropped a home rivalry contest against Albany (74-62) and road games at Vermont (77-66) and La Salle (78-74).
• Junior Rob Poole (15.5 ppg., 5.3 rpg.) is off to a hot start. He is shooting 42 percent from the field and 30 percent from 3-point range.
• Freshmen Lavon Long (12.3 ppg., 6.3 rpg.) and Maurice White (9.5 ppg., 3.0 rpg.) rank second and third on the team in scoring.
• Siena is shooting 40 percent from the floor, 29 percent from 3-point range and are blocking 5.5 shots per game as a team.
• Patsos helped turnaround the Loyola (MD) program from a one-win team to an NCAA tournament participant in 2012. He was the 2012 MAAC Coach of the Year and has a 146-138 mark in 10 seasons as a head coach.
THE CORNELL-SIENA SERIES:
• Siena leads the all-time series 2-1.
• The two teams met for the first time in 1985 with Siena earning a 70-55 decision in the finals of the Siena Invitational.
• The Big Red's lone victory came during the 2007-08 campaign, an 83-77 triumph over the Saints.
• Siena won the last meeting between the teams, a 74-56 Saints victory in Albany, N.Y.
CORNELL VS. METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE:
• Cornell is 61-50 all-time against current members of the Patriot League, including 1-2 against Siena.
• The Big Red has also played Canisius (25-17), Fairfield (0-2), Iona (0-2), Manhattan (1-1), Marist (2-3), Niagara (27-20), Quinnipiac (2-2), Rider (3-0) and Saint Peter's (0-1).
• Cornell has never played Monmouth, who like Quinnipiac, is in their first year in the MAAC.
• This is the first of two games Cornell is scheduled to play against MAAC schools this season. The Big Red will also play Saint Peter's on Dec. 28.
LAST TIME VS. THE SAINTS:
• In a battle of two of the top mid-major teams, Siena used its superior depth and four starters in double figures to earn a 74-56 victory over Cornell at the Times Union Center.
• Siena's Kenny Hasbrouck tallied 22 points and added five rebounds and four assists, while Ryan Rossiter had 10 points, 15 rebounds and four steals in an active performance down low for the Saints.
• Cornell got a 14-point, nine-rebound effort from Jeff Foote, while Geoff Reeves added 13 points and Ryan Wittman chipped in with 11 despite a tough 4-of-17 effort from the floor.
• Chris Wroblewski had five points, five rebounds and a career-high three steals vs. Siena.
• Cornell shot just 35 percent overall and 29 percent from beyond the arc in an uncharacteristically
poor shooting night.
THE STREAKS:
• Cornell is 107-78 (.578) in the last six seasons.
• The Big Red is 56-28 (.667) in its last 84 Ivy League contests over the last six years.
• Cornell is 60-24 (.714) over its last 84 home games.
• In non-conference games, the Big Red is 50-50 (.500) over the last six seasons vs. scholarship programs.
• The Big Red is 7-6 on the road in its last 13 games away from Newman Arena.
NOTES TO KNOW:
• Cornell has increased its win totals in each of the last two seasons under head coach Bill Courtney, from 10 in 2010-11 after graduating eight seniors from the previous year's NCAA Sweet 16 team, to 12 in 2011-12 to 13 a year ago.
• Junior Devin Cherry needs 10 points to reach 250 for his career and is two rebounds shy of 100.
• In its last two games, both on the road, Cornell has allowed opponents to shoot 57 percent overall (65-of-114) and 45 percent from 3-point range (20-of-44).
• Freshman Robert Hatter established a Cornell freshman record with 32 points against Loyola (MD).
• Sophomore Nolan Cressler needs five 3-pointers to climb into Cornell's career top 20 list.
• Cressler had 20 points in the first half against #8/7 Syracuse, nearly matching his career high of 22 points. He established a new personal best with his 23 points in the game.
• Cressler has a streak of nine consecutive double figure scoring games dating back to last year.
• Senior Dwight Tarwater had 21 points and 11 rebounds against the Greyhounds, nearly matching his junior year scoring total (30 points) and surpassing his rebounding total from a year ago (eight).
• Junior Devin Cherry had a career-best 17 points against Binghamton.
• The Big Red brings a 11-game losing streak into the contest, its longest since Cornell lost 14 straight during the 1979-80 campaign.
