LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men’s basketball team continues its homestand on Friday with a nonconference matchup against Cornell in the KFC Yum! Center at 7 p.m.
The Nov. 15 game will air on WHAS-TV, with Drew Deener (play-by-play) and Bob Valvano (analyst) calling the action. The game is available on ESPN3 for those not in the WHAS viewing area. Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Doug Ormay (analyst) will announce the game on WHAS 840 AM.
In its last time out, Louisville (2-0) nearly eclipsed the 100-point plateau in a Hall of Fame Tipoff victory over Hofstra. The Cardinals shot a 51.5 percent (35 of 68) clip from the field, knocking down 12 treys, en route to a 97-69 win. Louisville lost the ball just five times throughout the game, while forcing the Pride into 22 turnovers.
Russ Smith led all scorers with 30 points, falling just one point shy of his career high. He went 12 of 22 from the field and tied a career-best with five made 3-pointers. He also dished out five assists and recorded two of the Cardinals’ 10 steals. Chris Jones added 20 points, seven assists, and four steals in the win and now has gone 55 minutes without committing a turnover.
Montrezl Harrell had another remarkable game from the field, connecting of 7 of 9 shots for 19 points.
Through Wednesday, the Cardinals currently are the No. 1 team in the 2014 Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings. The squad also boasts the No. 1 ranking in adjusted defense efficiency and is No. 3 in adjusted offense efficiency.
Cornell (0-3) dropped its third-consecutive game to open the season, falling to Binghamton 89-79 on Wednesday.
The Big Red led at the half by 13 points, but Binghamton outscored Cornell 59-36 in the second half for the win. Cornell shot 47.6 percent for the game, which included a 58.1 percent clip in the first half.
Binghamton, which was led by three 20-point performances, hit 14 3-pointers and scored 27 points from the charity stripe. Binghamton’s Marlon Beck scored a game-high 27 on 9-of-15 shooting, which included six buckets from 3-point range. Jordan Reed added 25, and Nick Madray tallied 23 in the victory.
Cornell opened the season with Syracuse and led the No. 9 Orange by as many as 14 points before closing the first half with a 38-32 advantage. Syracuse, however, outscored Cornell 50-22 in the final period for an 82-60 victory.
Through three games this season, Nolan Cressler is pacing Cornell behind 18.7 points per game. Dwight Tarwater, who is averaging 7.3 points per game, is first in rebounding at seven per contest.
The Big Red, which returns three starters from their 13-18 team a year ago, is under the direction of fourth-year coach Bill Courtney. In the Ivy League’s preseason coaches’ poll, Cornell was picked to finish sixth.
