Two Central New York teams will be looking to kickstart their seasons when Cornell and Binghamton clash on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena in Bartels Hall. You can watch the game live on the Ivy League Digital Network or listen live to Barry Leonard and Eric Taylor on HITS 103.3 FM.
Both the Big Red and the Bearcats are desperate to pick up their first win of the 2013-14 season after starting the year 0-2. Cornell dropped a pair of exciting contest, one to #8/7 Syracuse in a game Cornell led by 14 in the first half and the other an overtime contest against Loyola (MD) in the home opener. The Bearcats dropped a five-point decision to the same Greyhounds squad before falling by 17 at Brown.
Cornell has gotten an early lift from its freshman class, including reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week Robert Hatter. The guard from Texas averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games, including a freshman-record 32 points against Loyola (MD). Guard Darryl Smith had 13 points against the Greyhounds and is averaging 8.0 points, while center David Onuorah is posting 6.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.
While the freshmen have made an impact, sophomore Nolan Cressler (18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists) and senior Dwight Tarwater (12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds) have been the steady contributors among the upperclassmen. Junior captain Devin Cherry is averaging 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists, while senior guard Dominick Scelfo is scoring 4.5 points through two contests.
Binghamton is led by sophomore Jordan Reed, the 2012-13 America East Rookie of the Year. Reed averages 15.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks over his first two contests, while freshman forward Nick Madray is posting 15.5 points and 3.0 rebounds. • Chemerinski made sure the Big Red wouldn't fold, grabbing an offensive rebound and putback and then grabbing another that led to a Galal Cancer free throw that sealed the game with eight seconds left.
• Senior Johnathan Gray scored a team-high 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and grabbed six rebounds, while freshman Nolan Cressler and junior Dominick Scelfo each scored 14.
